Chapter 275

The smile on the Masked Girl’s face instantly froze.

“What are you talking about? I don’t understand,” the Masked Girl said, still trying to keep up the act.

She had used this disguise to deceive many batches of Trial-takers.

In a dangerous environment like an Instance, whenever Trial-takers ran into another human, they would naturally feel a sense of trust.

Gu Huaiwei pointed toward the Pharmacy, then found an empty hospital bed and sat down. She crossed her long legs, braced herself with both hands behind her, her black hair falling over her shoulders, her smile gentle. “He’s been hiding behind you all this time, enjoying everything you do for him while looking down on the things you do. Honestly, that’s pretty annoying, huh?”

When the Masked Girl didn’t respond, the smile at the corner of Gu Huaiwei’s lips deepened. “Don’t be so nervous. I’m your new coworker. This is the recommendation letter our homeroom teacher wrote for me.”

Gu Huaiwei took out the recommendation letter.

The Masked Girl glanced at it but didn’t take it. Instead, she kept a safe distance from Gu Huaiwei.

She said coolly, “You need to hand the recommendation letter to the School Doctor during the day tomorrow.”

“I see.” Gu Huaiwei gave a calm shrug. It seemed there was no way for her to keep pushing things forward tonight.

“You… heard all of that just now?”

Gu Huaiwei nodded. “Every last word. I heard it exactly as it was.”

“He deserved it! I helped him deliver the experimental equipment so his own hands wouldn’t get stained with blood, but he still thought I was cruel and vicious. He kept saying those things over and over, hurting me.” The Masked Girl murmured to herself, looking a little forlorn. “I’m not someone without a temper. Since he wanted release so badly, I gave it to him…”

The Masked Girl couldn’t really be said to regret it.

And yet there was something unbearably lonely about the way she stood there.

“Aren’t you planning to stay and work here? That’s good, then. You seem smart. Let’s get along from now on.”

The Masked Girl felt that out with the old, in with the new. Rather than keeping Xiao Xu around and making herself miserable, she might as well get along with Gu Huaiwei, this new coworker.

As long as she still had a human coworker, she wasn’t alone.

That night, Gu Huaiwei claimed one of the beds in the Infirmary for herself. She took two soft blankets out of the Jade Bracelet, tossed one to Lin She, wrapped herself in the other, and went to sleep fully dressed.

In the middle of the night, another student was carried in from the direction of the athletic field on a stretcher.

The student’s cries were rather loud. After being woken by the noise, Gu Huaiwei only cracked open her sleepy eyes and took a look. The student’s feet were grotesquely swollen, and several girls in nurse uniforms were gathered around him, talking about amputation.

The Masked Girl drove those nurses away and planned to send the student to the Lab Equipment Room.

The School Doctor wouldn’t come at night.

Gu Huaiwei pulled the blanket higher and went back to sleep in peace.

After falling asleep, Gu Huaiwei dreamed that a gigantic black serpent had coiled its tail around her. Thick black fog surrounded them, so dense she couldn’t see her hand in front of her face. In the fog, those students reached their hands out to her, but all of them were blocked outside the serpent’s massive tail.

When she woke the next day, the Masked Girl had already gone out to work.

There were several new bloodstains on the bed beside her.

Several of the patients brought in during the night were already gone. The ones that remained were still lying in bed, fast asleep.

Gu Huaiwei got up and stretched. The beds in the Infirmary were not comfortable to sleep on. She rubbed her aching lower back, stood up, and waited for the doctor.

This time, the doctor who came was not the same as last time.

The doctor’s mouth was sewn shut with black thread, and his eyes had no black pupils at all-only the whites remained.
He was holding several bloodstained tags in his hand.

On the back of each tag was an iron clip meant to pierce flesh.

Gu Huaiwei watched as one of the doctors forcibly stabbed those tags into the bodies of the students still lying on the beds.

The iron clips sank straight into their flesh.

The students’ bodies twitched, and black pus oozed out of them.

Gu Huaiwei stepped closer and saw the words “80% Chance of Recovery” written on the iron clips.

In truth, those students were all extremely sick.

Their faces were swollen purple, their bodies bloated, practically no different from corpses. They didn’t look remotely like students who had any chance of recovery.

But the doctors without mouths were exceptionally optimistic.

They had no mouths.

Yet their faces were full of smiles.

The school doctors tirelessly clipped iron tags onto the students, then reported their conditions to the homeroom teachers, who collected treatment fees from the students’ parents.

Because the school was under closed-campus management, parents outside had no way to see their own children.

Just then, the School Doctor with a mouth suddenly burst in. He had no eyes and was in a state of violent rage. Swinging both fists, he felt his way from bed to bed and roughly tore off every iron clip.

“They can’t be cured… ka-ka-ka… not like this…”

“No one can leave the Infirmary right now. The formula for the special medicine is about to hatch… ka-ka-ka… these students can still be saved… they can’t leave this place!”

The moment she heard the words “special medicine,” Gu Huaiwei immediately perked up.

The mouthless doctors stepped forward to stop him.

Then, in the blink of an eye, the Infirmary filled with a dark mass of mouthless doctors, and they began tearing at the doctor with a mouth.

The doctor with a mouth had no eyes, so he was at a disadvantage in the fight.

His white coat was torn off.

Gu Huaiwei remembered skimming the Rules earlier. They said that only those wearing white coats and a small Infirmary staff badge were doctors.

And those mouthless doctors were trying to snatch the doctor with a mouth’s badge.

The doctor with a mouth protected it desperately.

“Lin She, let’s drive all the mouthless ones away together.”

There were quite a lot of mouthless doctors.

Gu Huaiwei grabbed a handy broom from the Infirmary and beat all the mouthless doctors out.

Lin She, meanwhile, supported the doctor with a mouth.

That doctor’s fingers were astonishingly strong, clamping down hard on Lin She’s arm.

Under Lin She’s black robe, his skin was actually covered in serpentine scales.

He had only squeezed slightly before his fingernails snapped.

He couldn’t see, but he was desperately trying to break free from Lin She.

“Doctor, I’m a newly arrived student part-timer in the Infirmary. This is my letter of recommendation.” Gu Huaiwei stuffed the recommendation letter into the doctor’s hand.

The doctor froze for a moment, then stuck out his tongue and licked the letter before stuffing the whole thing into his mouth and swallowing it.

“Then follow me… ka-ka-ka… I’ve discovered the principal’s secret…” The doctor with a mouth reached out and groped toward Gu Huaiwei, revealing a satisfied smile. “The principal is hatching the special medicine… ka-ka-ka… every night he goes to the Laboratory to secretly eat it, and his belly has grown especially large. The special medicine is about to hatch inside the principal.”

At last, Gu Huaiwei had found a clue about the special medicine for Mist Lung Disease.

“In that case, let’s go take a look.”

The School Doctor shook his head. “Eyes. I don’t have eyes… ka-ka-ka… give me a pair of eyes, and I’ll go with you.”

“That’s easy.”
