Chapter 282

Bai Yuzhen brought up Fang Zhao again.

The Contamination on her body was gradually worsening.

Gu Huaiwei looked at the back of Bai Yuzhen’s hand where the spider had bitten her. Black Contamination was spreading through her veins and across her whole body.

“Lin She, is there any way to deal with the Contamination in this world?”

Every time Lin She entered a new small world, he always did his homework in advance.

“No. But within a single Instance, if the Instance’s Contamination is lifted, lightly contaminated Trial-takers can maintain their condition and avoid dying, though the Contamination won’t disappear from their bodies.”

“Bai Yuzhen’s in bad shape. We need to end this fast.” Gu Huaiwei led Bai Yuzhen and quickly headed for the Principal’s Office.

Basement Level 8 beneath the Laboratory Building.

Gu Huaiwei searched the entire floor for the principal.

But what Bai Yuzhen saw was a completely different scene.

“Shopkeeper Gu, there are so many people here. If we just walk through like this, will we be okay?” As Bai Yuzhen walked, she kept turning sideways to avoid people, as if she were making room for them.

Gu Huaiwei held the back of Bai Yuzhen’s hand. All she could see in front of her was a pitch-black corridor piled with bottles and jars. There was no one there.

“What do you see? Tell me.”

“I see… a lot of students in researchers’ uniforms. They’re discussing the results of this experiment… It looks like one student team developed a special cure for Mist Lung Disease, and they’re getting ready to tell the principal the good news.”

Because the students’ faces were overflowing with happiness, Bai Yuzhen seemed relaxed for the moment.

But before long, Gu Huaiwei noticed Bai Yuzhen’s whole body had gone rigid. She gripped Gu Huaiwei’s hand tightly, her nails digging into Gu Huaiwei’s flesh.

Ignoring the pain on the back of her hand, Gu Huaiwei continued asking, “What do you see now?”

“I… I… those students all suddenly turned to look at me.” Bai Yuzhen kept backing away, trying to run, but Gu Huaiwei held her in place.

By now, Bai Yuzhen was already immersed in another world.

Gu Huaiwei’s voice gradually faded from her ears.

She saw the smiles vanish from every student’s face. In the once-noisy corridor, everyone fell silent and stared at her in unison.

“The principal… the principal came out…”

Bai Yuzhen started trembling even harder. She began wildly flailing her hands, clawing at the air. “I’m not! I’m not experimental material! Don’t grab me!”

“Calm down.” When Gu Huaiwei saw Bai Yuzhen starting to lose control, she pressed down on the wound on the back of her hand, squeezing the black blood out.

Pain could temporarily restore clarity to someone with mild Contamination.

Sure enough, after Gu Huaiwei applied more force, Bai Yuzhen’s struggling eased somewhat. The scene before her blurred, and she was able to hear Gu Huaiwei calling to her again.

“The Formula for the Mist Lung Disease Cure is with the principal. Get it for me.”

“No… no, I can’t…”

“Steal it.” Gu Huaiwei tucked Bai Yuzhen’s messy hair behind her ear, then stroked her face and made her look into her eyes. “Be good. Listen to me. First go lie low by the fitting room, change into a set of the researchers’ clothes from inside, then slip into the Principal’s Office.”

Gu Huaiwei’s voice was especially gentle, as if it carried some special magic, and Bai Yuzhen gradually calmed down.

“But how am I supposed to cross the boundary of Contamination and give it to you?”

“Of course by finding a way within the Rules to hand me the cure.” Gu Huaiwei placed a stack of Yellow Paper filled with Lifespan into Bai Yuzhen’s palm. “You’re the Learning Committee Member. You’ve already cleared other Instances on your own. This is only one more challenge for you. Don’t panic. Although I can’t see what you see, I’ll stay by your side the whole time.”
The S-rank clearance Rules required them to remove the Instance’s Contamination, and the greatest source of Contamination in this Instance was Mist Lung Disease.

The principal had stolen the students’ research results for a cure to Mist Lung Disease. For some unknown reason, he never released the medicine to the public. Instead, he locked down the school, causing the Contamination on campus to grow worse and worse.

What the Trial-taker needed to do was uncover the full truth and make it public.

Bai Yuzhen found her confidence again.

She didn’t want to die here, and she didn’t want this trip through the Instance to be for nothing.

So she quickly pulled herself together.

Gu Huaiwei led her to the long-abandoned fitting room, removed the finger pressed against the back of her hand, and gently massaged the red, swollen area with her fingertips.

As the pain faded, the scene before Bai Yuzhen’s eyes shifted once more.

This time, the Corridor was in chaos.

She found a researcher’s clothes in the fitting room, put them on, added a researcher’s cap and mask, and slipped into the crowd.

A large number of security guards had arrived in the Corridor, searching for the intruder.

Gu Huaiwei’s voice gradually faded from Bai Yuzhen’s ears as she followed the group of students preparing to make their report to the Principal’s Office.

There, she saw Fang Zhao, reduced to a piece of experimental equipment.

He was locked inside an enormous glass container. The tumors on his body had already been cut away, and transparent tubes covered him from head to toe, hooked up to IV drips whose names she didn’t know.

Though his body was riddled with wounds, he could still speak, and his mind was clear.

Fang Zhao was the “specimen” that had already been cured.

Seeing him like this, Bai Yuzhen felt a painful tightness in her chest.

She had the feeling that this time, they might not be able to go back together.

She desperately wanted to smash the glass right then and there and save the Class Monitor, who had drifted through hardship with her all this way, but she knew she couldn’t act rashly.

“I’ll save you,” Bai Yuzhen mouthed to Fang Zhao with her back to the others.

Fang Zhao’s gaze slowly moved to her face, then slid away again as if he hadn’t seen anything at all.

Bai Yuzhen set her sights on the upperclassman holding the experiment report.

The upperclassman was discussing the contents of the report with his companions.

A younger schoolgirl handed him some water.

Pretending to be an admirer tagging along with the team, Bai Yuzhen found some transparent liquid of unknown composition in the fitting room and dripped two drops into the water.

She watched with her own eyes as the upperclassman holding the experiment report drank the spiked water.

Bai Yuzhen prayed that something would happen to him.

After a while, the upperclassman’s expression remained normal, but he said he needed to go to the restroom and handed the experiment report over to other people.

Bai Yuzhen had wanted to take it herself, but the others guarded the report too closely. She tested the waters several times and still couldn’t find a chance to make a move.

As Bai Yuzhen moved about, Gu Huaiwei followed her through the abandoned eighth floor. She saw Bai Yuzhen pick up a shattered glass bottle with the words “Human Tissue Fluid” engraved on it.

The mouth of the bottle was broken.

The jagged glass could cut Bai Yuzhen’s hand.

When Bai Yuzhen gripped the bottle, Gu Huaiwei subtly adjusted her posture a little to keep the glass from piercing her hand and making her bleed.

Bai Yuzhen kept wandering in circles around the eighth floor, not knowing what she was doing.

At last, Gu Huaiwei saw Bai Yuzhen head for the Principal’s Office.

Their bodies occupied the same space, but their consciousnesses existed in two different worlds. Together, they stepped into the Principal’s Office. A cold wind swept through, and with a bang, the Office door slammed shut.

Gu Huaiwei felt Bai Yuzhen’s body tense all at once.
