Chapter 64

Half a month later, Lu Yichen’s new book finished its serialization, and plans for its publication were immediately set in motion. With the manhua adaptation currently in the middle of a popular run, the hype surrounding the series was overwhelming.

News of a second ending for the physical release kept readers’ enthusiasm at an all-time high as they eagerly awaited its publication.

For a rookie author, this level of popularity was almost unheard of. Naturally, there were disparaging voices online, but neither Lu Yichen nor Gu Xiaonuan paid them much mind.

To Gu Xiaonuan, such comments were trivial and painless. As for Lu Yichen, he would simply offer a small smile whenever he saw them, never showing any signs of anger.

The film and television adaptation rights, which had been sold long before the serialization began, rode the wave of the finale’s hype to announce the start of a casting call.

As the author of the book, Lu Yichen was naturally invited to attend.

Gu Xiaonuan hadn’t expected that one of the investors for the adaptation would be the Old Man.

The organizers of the casting call seemed intent on making a massive impact, teaming up with a famous variety show in T City. Currently, Gu Xiaonuan and Lu Yichen were at the television station for a pre-recording briefing.

As soon as everyone met Lu Yichen, they immediately decided they wanted him to be one of the judges for the selection process, but he flatly refused.

Lu Yichen maintained a humble, approachable, and sunny smile. His words were polite, yet his stance was non-negotiable, leaving many present to voice their disappointment.

“Then, could Teacher Lu at least appear in the promotional video? After all, you wrote the book yourself, and the readers are hoping to see how much you value this project.”

“That’s right, Teacher Lu. If you don’t make an appearance, our marketing team won’t know which angle to focus on.”

Ji Xiangnan, who had walked in to listen, stood up. He gave Gu Xiaonuan a look before pushing the door open and walking out.

Gu Xiaonuan stood up and followed him out silently.

The two of them reached the stairwell at the end of the corridor. Seeing her tense expression, Ji Xiangnan couldn’t help but chuckle. “Li isn’t here.”

Gu Xiaonuan let out a massive sigh of relief. “When is he going to leave? He’s like a ticking time bomb.”

“I’m not sure. Whether he stays or goes is his choice; it’s not my place to interfere.”

Ji Xiangnan studied Gu Xiaonuan for a moment before reaching out with his large hand to cup her cheek. “How many days has it been since you last fed?”

“Five days.” Gu Xiaonuan’s chin was tilted up somewhat forcefully by him, revealing the sharp fangs inside. “He’s been very tired lately; I don’t want to add to his burden.”

Ji Xiangnan narrowed his eyes slightly. “You certainly are considerate of your food.”

Gu Xiaonuan frowned slightly, and Ji Xiangnan released her. “Aside from his value as food, he also has high commercial value. He should be treated well.”

“Li…” Gu Xiaonuan was still uneasy. Ji Xiangnan leaned against the wall, rubbing his neck as a flash of crimson flickered in the depths of his eyes.

“How exactly did Li get a taste of Lu Yichen’s blood?”

Gu Xiaonuan froze. “How is that possible? There’s no way he tasted Lu Yichen’s blood. He didn’t even…”

“Was it that day at the amusement park?”

Ji Xiangnan turned his head, his eyes now completely crimson. “Little girl, do you have any idea what the consequences are when an eight-hundred-year-old vampire sets his sights on something?”

“I didn’t…!” Gu Xiaonuan clenched her hands. “I was with him the whole time in the haunted house. Lu Yichen was injured, but at most, Li only smelled it. There’s no way he could have tasted it!”

*Thud!*

Gu Xiaonuan was pinned against the wall by Ji Xiangnan. “Are you suggesting the food delivered itself to his door?”

Pressed against the wall by Ji Xiangnan’s single hand, Gu Xiaonuan let out a ragged cough. “Impossible. I was with him the entire time.”
Ji Xiangnan let go of her. “If Li doesn’t leave soon, you should consider taking him away from here.”

“Leave here?”

Ji Xiangnan let out a cold sneer. “That’s right. Do you think I’m so omnipotent that I can suppress an 800-year-old elder Vampire?”

Gu Xiaonuan lowered her head and remained silent for a moment. Seeing that she was truly frightened, Ji Xiangnan sighed helplessly.

“You don’t have to leave just yet.” He reached out and patted the top of her head. “He… doesn’t dare to make a move yet.”

“Doesn’t dare? He’s so old, how could he not dare?”

Ji Xiangnan’s hand moved to her chin, gently tilting it up as he leaned in close. His crimson eyes locked onto Gu Xiaonuan’s. “The Church’s people followed him here.”

“The… Church?”

Gu Xiaonuan’s eyes slowly widened. For someone not even fifty years old, this information was far too overwhelming.

“Why else do you think an elder Vampire like him would come here?” Ji Xiangnan curled his lips, the crimson in his eyes deepening. “Little one, if you don’t eat soon, he’ll lose half his life with your next bite.”

“I know.”

Ji Xiangnan chuckled, patted her head again, and pulled away.

A voice echoed from the hallway. “Xiaonuan?”

Leaning against the wall, Gu Xiaonuan trembled. Her body began to move forward uncontrollably. Ji Xiangnan watched her lack of self-control and gave a cold laugh.

“Xiaonuan?”

Gu Xiaonuan pushed the door open and walked straight out.

Ji Xiangnan stood in the stairwell, watching Lu Yichen through the half-glass pane of the door as he searched. He looked just like a puppy who couldn’t find its owner.

The two in the corridor exchanged a few words before Lu Yichen wrapped his arms around Gu Xiaonuan’s body. In the deserted hallway, he leaned down and kissed her.

Ji Xiangnan watched the scene with his crimson eyes. Lu Yichen’s kiss seemed to grow more intense, and Gu Xiaonuan, held in his arms, appeared to be swept up in some kind of emotion.

Ji Xiangnan frowned slightly as he watched his ‘little one’ suddenly exert force, pinning Lu Yichen against the wall and taking control of the kiss.

She even uncontrollably bared her fangs.

*Swish!*

Ji Xiangnan’s figure blurred as he rushed out, his hand clamping firmly onto the back of Gu Xiaonuan’s head.

He stared at Lu Yichen’s flushed, handsome face, then looked coldly at the dazed Gu Xiaonuan. “Have you forgotten everything I taught you?”

“I… I’m hungry. Just one bite.”

Gu Xiaonuan’s tongue darted out to lick her fangs. Ji Xiangnan narrowed his long, narrow eyes and released his grip. “Get into the stairwell. Don’t bite him out here.”

In the blink of an eye, Gu Xiaonuan pulled Lu Yichen into the passage. Just then, someone pushed a door open nearby. “Hey, where did Teacher Lu go?”

Ji Xiangnan looked directly into the person’s eyes. Moments later, the person turned around and walked back through the door they had just opened.

“Ugh!”

A muffled groan came from the stairwell, followed by the scent of fresh blood. Ji Xiangnan leaned against the doorframe, watching Gu Xiaonuan buried against Lu Yichen’s waist.

Before meeting Lu Yichen, the little one hadn’t even known how to use her teeth to feed.

“Xiaonuan!”

Lu Yichen called out in a low, strained voice, “Not there!”

Hearing his voice, Ji Xiangnan raised an eyebrow slightly. She hadn’t just learned how to use her teeth; she had also learned… how to please her food.
