Chapter 4

I felt a bit helpless. “I’m trying to nourish your body. Nothing is more restorative than my own flesh and blood.”

Huo Langxing frowned in thought for a moment before scolding me, “How can you believe in such ancient superstitions!”

I retorted, “It’s not really an ancient superstition. Many doctors prescribe it this way.”

“Then they are all quacks!”

As Huo Langxing spoke, he snatched the knife from my hand. “You don’t need to do this. Rest assured, since I gave you my word, I will definitely come back for you. I have urgent matters to attend to right now. Wait for me to return and fetch you.”

I couldn’t win the argument, so I could only spend the night soaking some Xuxu Water for him to take along.

“Drink this water properly. Remember to change your bandages, and don’t get hurt again.”

Please don’t die. I still need to become an immortal.

I looked at him with a face full of worry, but Huo Langxing smiled and pinched my cheek. “Shen Shen, don’t worry. I’ll definitely come back to get you as soon as possible.”

The moment Huo Langxing left, I transformed into my original form and followed him.

I have to say, walking with my root-tendrils was much faster.

Huo Langxing, on the other hand, moved quite slowly. Sometimes I even had to sit in a tree and wait for him for a while.

Huo Langxing traveled west all the way, disguising himself as a hunter to enter Linxian City.

I didn’t need a disguise because I could just tunnel through the dirt.

Half an hour later, inside a house, Huo Langxing was talking to a man while I sat on a roof beam, nodding off.

The man said, “General, after you went missing, City Lord Jiang sent many people to find you. Are you alright?”

Huo Langxing gave a cold snort. “He wasn’t sending people to find me; he was sending them to kill me. That day, I discovered his secret in the City Lord’s Mansion, so he wanted me dead. I’ve already clashed with his men.”

The man was shocked. “How could this be? What does the General plan to do now?”

Huo Langxing replied, “Don’t alert the enemy for now. Tomorrow at noon, take a squad to the city gate to meet me. I’ll enter the city openly and boldly; he won’t be able to do anything to me then.”

The man nodded. “The General is a man of great fortune; you will surely expose City Lord Jiang’s conspiracy.”

Huo Langxing’s tone softened considerably at those words. “It wasn’t because of my fortune. It was a woman who saved me.”

The man froze. “General, since the City Lord has discovered you, then… will that woman be in danger?”

I was startled awake by the loud sound of a door slamming.

Opening my eyes, I saw Huo Langxing mounting a horse and heading back toward the small log cabin.

He was riding too fast, and I didn’t really feel like chasing him.

After a thought, I decided to use the Earth Evasion Technique to head back first and wait for him.

A moment later, I poked my head out of the ground in front of the cabin.

For some reason, the small yard was a mess, looking as if it had been ransacked.

It wasn’t dawn yet, and the earth underground was damp and comfortable. I didn’t really want to crawl out.

Thinking that it would take Huo Langxing quite a while to return, I decided to stay buried in the soil for a bit.

As I lay there, I drifted off to sleep. Later, finding the morning sun too bright, I even transformed a leaf to cover my head.

The moment Huo Langxing entered the yard, he saw a scene of total chaos. The once tidy little yard was gone, and even that somewhat dazed girl had vanished.

She… no, she’ll be fine.

Huo Langxing’s blood suddenly ran cold, but he forced himself to stay calm and shouted loudly in the yard.

“Shen Shen! Shen Shen!”

Huo Langxing searched the cabin and the yard, but he still found nothing.

Just as he gripped his sword, prepared to return to Linxian City for revenge, a tuft of hair in the grass by the entrance caught his attention.

Huo Langxing stepped forward and lifted the giant leaf, only to see a familiar human head.

Huo Langxing collapsed directly onto the ground, unable to believe his eyes.

Just a day ago, this girl had been lively and talking about repaying a debt. How could she, today…

Huo Langxing’s heart sank inch by inch. He reached out, wanting to pick up the head.

As it turned out…

He couldn’t budge it.

Huo Langxing was a bit dazed. The sensation in his hands was warm and delicate, completely different from a dead person.

But he still instinctively exerted more strength to lift it again.

It still wouldn’t come up.

In the next moment, the head he was cradling suddenly moved. Then, it opened its eyes and greeted him.

“Oh, you’re back.”
