After Mo Bai left for work, I lay in bed and sorted through the plot.

In the book, male beastfolk possessed overwhelming physical strength, but lived under the year-round threat of psychic overload. Only females could soothe them.

Yet the ratio of males to females in the beastworld was horrifyingly unequal. Many males had no female to soothe them, causing their psychic power to collapse until they became mindless beasts.

To preserve the stability of Federation society, the government allowed each female to have multiple beastman husbands.

Females held an exalted position. They did not have to work, and the government deposited a vast sum into each of their personal accounts every month.

Their status was so high that even if they beat, abused, or killed a beastman husband, they faced no legal punishment—only moral condemnation.

It was monstrously unfair.

The males possessed tremendous strength, yet received none of the respect they deserved. Sooner or later, that contradiction was bound to erupt.

It was precisely what had killed the original Ning Yuan.

I went over every part of the plot involving her from beginning to end.

My face turned deathly pale.

There was only one plot point left before Mo Bai hacked me to pieces: the part where I joined forces with my lover to murder him.

Before that, he had already endured abuse, whippings, and even a near attempt to trade him for another husband.

“Am I seeing things? That’s actually a female! And she’s so beautiful.”

“Is that a lunch box in her hand? Did she come to bring General Mo Bai lunch?”

“My God! General Mo Bai is so lucky!”

My personal terminal chimed with an incoming video call from Mo Bai.

Onscreen, he wore a dark green military uniform. The commanding air of a man accustomed to authority was on full display, making him look even calmer and more captivating.

“Please wait a moment, my lady. I’ll be there shortly.”

I spent the wait in a state of nervous suspense.

What would he think of it…?

As a thousand thoughts raced through my mind, someone knocked on the door.

Thinking Mo Bai had arrived, I went happily to greet him.

Instead, I found an unfamiliar face.

The newcomer was delicately, almost femininely handsome, his skin deathly pale. Long green hair fell to his waist, and his irises were the rich green of the finest emeralds, though the pupils within them were unusually vertical.

The instant I saw him, he matched a man in my memories—Jin Chen.

A snake beastman.

And “my” lover.

At the sight of me, the gloom vanished from his face and transformed into delight. He looked like a forlorn puppy whose owner had finally come home.

Before I could say a word, Jin Chen’s mouth began firing like a whole string of firecrackers.

“Yuanyuan, you never answered any of my messages. Did some other beastman take my place in your heart and make you forget me?

“Please, don’t abandon me.

“I’d be so sad. So very, very sad.”

His gaze shifted to the lunch box in my hand, and he abruptly fell silent.

His emerald eyes softened into limpid pools. In the next instant, Jin Chen threw himself at me and wrapped me in his arms, his voice both joyful and choked with emotion.

“Is that for me?

“Yuanyuan, you’re so good to me. I’ve never met a female as thoughtful as you.”

His enthusiasm made me break out in an awkward sweat.

To prevent any misunderstanding, I immediately protested, “No, no, no! This isn’t for you!”

At that moment, the heavy thud of military boots sounded in the corridor. Mo Bai appeared at the far end.

Just in time to see the two of us “embracing.”

For a split second, astonishment flickered through his eyes. Then he returned to his usual silent expression.

He said nothing at all, yet an icy breeze seemed to brush the back of my neck.

It felt like my life was about to end.

Jin Chen, however, was so immersed in his delight that he heard nothing.

He held me too tightly. No matter how desperately I shoved, he would not move; no matter how I protested, he would not listen. I could only stare in despair as he babbled away in front of Mo Bai and all his colleagues.

“Wow! Yuanyuan, you even remembered what I like! Lamb chops are my favorite!

“You’re so good to me!

“Did you come all this way just to see me?

“I’m so touched!”

The air froze solid.

Then a tiger-eared colleague beside Mo Bai blurted, “Damn, I thought the little female had brought that especially for the general. That’s why I rushed him over here.

“So it wasn’t for the general after all…”

He looked ready to cry. “Am I going to be punished for this?

“Just goes to show: never do anything in life based on ‘I thought.’”

I shot him a vicious glare. You really are a tiger-headed idiot!

Mo Bai’s expression remained unchanged at those words.

But beneath his sleeve, I saw his hand clench into a tight fist. After casting me one restrained glance, he turned on his heel and left without a word.

At that moment, it felt as if the sky had collapsed.

Consumed by fear for my future survival, I completely failed to notice the dark smile that curved Jin Chen’s lips after Mo Bai left. It vanished again in an instant.

The moment I felt Jin Chen’s hold loosen, I shoved him away and stamped my foot in fury. “The lunch box wasn’t for you!”

With righteous severity, I explained the situation to him. “Perhaps I was foolish before and did things that gave you the wrong idea about our relationship.

“But from now on, Mo Bai is the only one in my heart, and he will be my only beastman husband.

“Please don’t do anything that could cause another beastman to misunderstand us again!”

With that, I ignored him and chased in the direction Mo Bai had gone.

But they had moved too quickly. The interior of military headquarters was a twisting maze, and I could not find Mo Bai anywhere.
