Her Loyal Wolf - Chapter 2
After Mo Bai left for work, I lay in bed and sorted through the plot.
In this world, male beastmen possessed extraordinary physical strength, but they lived under the constant threat of mental-power rampages. Only females could soothe them.
Yet the imbalance between males and females was horrifying. Many male beastmen could not receive a female’s soothing, causing their mental power to collapse until they became mindless beasts.
To preserve the stability of Federation society, the government allowed each female to take multiple beast husbands.
Females held an exalted position. They did not have to work, and every month, the government deposited a large sum of money into their personal accounts.
Their status was so high that even if a female beat, abused, or killed a beast husband, the law would not punish her. At most, she would face moral condemnation.
It was grossly unfair.
The males had enormous physical strength yet received none of the respect they deserved. Sooner or later, that contradiction was bound to erupt.
And it was precisely that contradiction that had killed the original Ning Yuan.
I went through every part of the plot that involved her from beginning to end.
My face went deathly pale.
Oh my God.
There was only one plot point left before Mo Bai tore me to pieces: the part where I conspired with my lover to murder him.
Before that, he had endured abuse, whippings, and even almost being traded away for another husband.
No wonder his darkening level was so high.
Hadn’t I been courting death this morning, then?
My vision went black.
Why did I have to clean up the original Ning Yuan’s mess?!
Complaining would not solve anything, and I certainly did not want to die.
So after getting up, washing, and filling my stomach, I began preparing lunch.
I was going to soften Mo Bai’s heart one step at a time until he gave up on killing me.
I tried to remember what foods he liked, but the original Ning Yuan’s memories yielded nothing except images of her abusing and beating him.
After some thought, I decided that since Mo Bai was a white wolf, he probably liked lamb.
I was a decent cook. Once the fragrant lamb chops were packed into a lunch box, I set off for the military headquarters where Mo Bai worked.
After I identified myself, someone quickly escorted me to Mo Bai’s office.
As the soldiers left, I could still hear them whispering.
“Am I seeing things? That’s actually a female! And she’s so beautiful.”
“Is that a lunch box in her hand? Did she bring lunch for General Mo Bai?”
“God! General Mo Bai is so lucky!”
My smart terminal chimed with an incoming video call from Mo Bai.
On the screen, he wore a dark green military uniform. The commanding aura of a man accustomed to authority was on full display, making him look even calmer and more captivating.
“My lady, please wait a moment. I’ll be there right away.”
My nerves churned as I waited.
What would he think of all this?
I was lost in a thousand anxious thoughts when someone knocked on the door.
Assuming it was Mo Bai, I hurried over happily to greet him.
Instead, I found myself facing a stranger.
The newcomer was delicately handsome, almost feminine, with skin so pale it was nearly bloodless. Long green hair fell to his waist, and his irises were the rich green of fine emeralds. Yet his pupils were a rare pair of vertical slits.
The instant I saw him, his face matched that of a man from my memories—Jin Chen.
A snake beastman.
And “my” lover.
The gloom on his face vanished as soon as he saw me, replaced by delight. He looked like an aggrieved puppy waiting for its owner to come home.
Before I could say anything, words began exploding from Jin Chen’s mouth like a string of firecrackers.
“Yuanyuan, you haven’t answered any of my messages. Did you find some other beastman and forget all about me?
“Please don’t abandon me.
“I’ll be heartbroken. Truly, terribly heartbroken.”
His gaze shifted to the lunch box in my hand, and he fell abruptly silent.
His emerald eyes turned soft and shimmering. The next instant, Jin Chen lunged forward and wrapped his arms around me, his voice choked with joy.
“Is this for me?
“Yuanyuan, you’re so good to me. I’ve never met such a thoughtful female.”
His enthusiasm made cold sweat prickle across my skin.
To prevent any misunderstanding, I denied it at once. “No, no, no! This isn’t for you!”
At that moment, the heavy thud of military boots sounded in the corridor. Mo Bai appeared at the far end.
He arrived just in time to see us “embracing.”
Surprise flashed across his face. In the next instant, he returned to his usual silent expression.
He did not say a word, yet a chill ran across my neck.
It felt exactly like my poor life was about to end.
Jin Chen, however, seemed too immersed in his joy to hear me.
He held me so tightly that I could not push him away no matter how hard I tried. He ignored all my protests and kept babbling in front of Mo Bai and his colleagues.
“Wow! Yuanyuan, you even remembered what I like! Lamb chops are my favorite!
“You’re so good to me!
“Did you come all this way just to see me?
“I’m so touched!”
The air froze.
Then a tiger-eared colleague beside Mo Bai blurted, “Damn! I thought the little female had brought that especially for the general, so I rushed him over here.
“So it wasn’t for the general after all…”
His face crumpled. “Am I going to be punished for this?
“A lesson for every beastman: never do anything just because you ‘thought’ you understood.”
I glared daggers at him. You really are a tiger—reckless and tactless!
Even after hearing that, Mo Bai’s face remained expressionless.
But I saw the hand beneath his sleeve clench into a fist. He cast me one restrained glance, then turned on his heel and left without a word.
At that moment, it felt as if the sky had collapsed on top of me.
Consumed by fear for my future survival, I failed to notice the dark smile curling at Jin Chen’s lips after Mo Bai left. It vanished again in the blink of an eye.
The instant Jin Chen’s grip loosened, I shoved him away and stamped my foot in anger. “That lunch box wasn’t for you!”
With utmost seriousness, I explained the situation in no uncertain terms. “Perhaps I was immature before. I did things I shouldn’t have and gave you the wrong idea about our relationship.
“But from now on, there is room in my heart for Mo Bai alone. He will be my only beast husband.
“Please do not do anything else that could cause this sort of misunderstanding!”
With that, I ignored him and ran in the direction Mo Bai had gone.
But they had moved too quickly, and the corridors inside military headquarters twisted in every direction. I could no longer find him.
