Chapter 3

The new clothes I had ordered for He Changqing half a month ago were ready.

The books I had asked the bookstore owner to buy from out of town had arrived as well.

Those were also for He Changqing.

When I returned home, He Changqing was the same as always.

He sat on the cushioned couch, meditating.

The firewood in the courtyard had already been chopped.

The vegetables had been prepared and set on the counter.

The water in the pot was nearly boiling too.

He took the books without saying much.

Still as cool and distant as ever.

But when he saw the new clothes, his brows drew together.

His lips curled in a cold sneer.

“Is there any point?”

“No matter what I wear, won’t I have to take it off at night to be punished?”

The comments cheered in unison:

[Hahaha, see? The male lead only has our darling female lead in his heart. No matter how much the vicious supporting female character tries to please him, it’s useless!]

[Does the supporting female character think the male lead will like her just because she gives him a few gifts? He’s the Crown Prince. Who would care about this shabby junk? It only makes her look poor and tacky!]

[The male lead’s sarcasm feels so good! Usually, when he gives the supporting female character a little leeway, it’s only because he’s a proper gentleman. Did she really think he liked her?]

I clenched the new clothes in my hands.

It felt as if my heart were being pricked by countless tiny needles.

My parents died when I was young.

Most of the men’s clothing at home was old and worn.

After I cured He Changqing’s injuries, I was not exactly well-off either.

But when I saw that bolt of new moon-white silk, all I could think was how handsome he would look in it.

Before I knew it, I had bought it.

I had completely forgotten that I myself had not had new clothes made in years.

Though my temper was a bit overbearing, I could honestly say I had never mistreated him.

Only when he angered me too badly would I lash him twice as discipline.

Compared to those men in the village who beat their wives all day long, I was much better.

Yet he was like an ungrateful wolf that could never be tamed.

At first, he did not know how to do anything and was even afraid when he saw a pig.

When I asked him to serve tea or pour water, he did so unwillingly.

As for having him wait on me while I bathed and changed, it was as if I were demanding his life.

His face would turn cold, his lips pressed tight, with only his ears reddening in anger.

He always looked as if he had suffered some tremendous humiliation.

And he was forever talking back to me.

No matter what I did, I could not warm his heart.

Even the whip striking his body seemed neither painful nor itchy to him.

He admitted his mistakes with his mouth, then committed them again the next time.

No matter what I did, I could not teach him properly.

Only after seeing those comments did I understand why.

My heart felt sour and swollen.

Even my chest seemed to ache a little.

All of a sudden, everything felt utterly pointless.

I did not want him anymore.

I flung the new clothes in my hands onto the ground, my voice cold.

“Fine. Then from now on, don’t wear anything at all!”

I slammed the door shut.

Then I took the red deed to the butcher shop down from the top of the cabinet.

During the day, I had already approached several shopkeepers.

I wanted to transfer the shop to someone else.

The heavenly book mentioned in those comments had come true, one thing after another.

People had already started searching for He Changqing on the streets.

If I did not want to end up with that kind of fate,

I had to leave.

I took out paper and brush and spread them across the table.

During the day, I had asked the bookstore owner about it.

Under the laws of the current dynasty, if a husband and wife wished to separate amicably, there had to be a letter releasing the wife.

He Changqing was someone who valued reputation and propriety above all.

To keep him from clinging to me out of stubborn pedantry,

I planned to write a Letter Releasing the Husband first.
