My vision blurred into darkness. Utterly spent, I could no longer hold myself upright and pitched forward.

A pair of hands caught my waist. A voice, ragged with pain, sounded beside my ear.

“jiejie… Jiejie…”

“It hurts.”

The broken sobs restored a sliver of my senses. I looked down and saw Bai Luo trembling beneath me, his clothes torn and red marks covering his body. Tears streaked his face, his lips were swollen, and his wet eyes made him look heartbreakingly fragile.

The cinnabar mark between his brows—the symbol of his chastity—was gone.

The realization struck like lightning. Ignoring every ache in my body, I scrambled off him.

“Luo, I didn’t mean to…” I said, on the verge of tears myself.

Bai Luo drew up his long legs and wrapped his arms around them. He shook his head, his voice soft and obedient. “It isn’t your fault. I was useless. I couldn’t protect Jiejie after that lust spirit poisoned you with its aphrodisiac.”

My mouth twitched. Bai Luo truly deserved his role as the novel’s universally adored love interest. Who could resist a rabbit spirit this beautiful and gentle?

But he was the beloved male lead of a historical boys’ love novel. He would never belong to me.

Only one thought remained in my head: run for my life.

“Jiejie, now that we’ve been intimate… will you marry me?”

Already wondering where I could flee, I glanced guiltily at him. The clear bite mark on his collarbone testified to my crime.

I hurriedly pulled a robe from my storage ring and draped it over him. “Put this on. You’ll catch cold.”

Realizing I was dodging his question, Bai Luo took my hand and pressed it to his chest. His tears fell on command.

“I’m yours now. You can’t abandon me.”

The soft flesh beneath my palm burned like an overripe berry, sending numbness all the way up my arm.

Beauty was a blade poised over the head. I repeated that warning to myself, tore my gaze away, and snatched back my hand before wrapping his robe more tightly around him.

How had things ever come to this?
