Chapter 3

At eight that evening, I set down my pen. It had been getting dark earlier and earlier lately, and by now the world outside was already a gloomy gray.

The System circled around me. [It’s going to rain tonight, you know~]

I pushed open the window and saw damp spots the size of copper coins already marking the cement road.

Chen Zhi couldn’t still be waiting there… could he?

By ten, the rain was coming down in torrents.

In weather like this, anyone with a normal brain would have gone home… right?

In the end, I still went out with two umbrellas in my arms.

There was no helping it. Chen Zhi was not a normal person.

My boots splashed through puddles, and the night wind carried the damp scent of mud.

I didn’t find Chen Zhi. Just as I was about to leave, I heard the faint, whimpering cry of a kitten.

In rain this heavy, a kitten would have a hard time surviving.

Following the sound, I found a kitten under a trellis of flowering vines.

And Chen Zhi.

His blue-and-white school uniform jacket was soaked through. Rain slid from his black hair down the smooth line of his jaw. He sat with his arms wrapped around his knees, like a tiny bamboo shoot in the middle of the storm.

The kitten crouched on his knees, sitting in exactly the same posture as him, trembling slightly.

Chen Zhi’s eyes were unfocused. I had no idea what he was thinking.

Only when I got closer did I hear him counting.

…

I stopped in front of Chen Zhi.

He lifted his head, and his eyes lit up.

Chen Zhi raised his right hand, then lowered it again.

He wanted to tug my sleeve, but when he saw how drenched and pathetic he looked, his face turned red.

“I lied to you. Why aren’t you angry? The first time you counted to one thousand, I didn’t come back at all, did I?”

Chen Zhi tilted his head, his gaze darting away. “I counted too fast.”

“You didn’t lie to me this time.”

This time?

Did that mean there had been a last time?

But this was clearly the first promise I had ever made with Chen Zhi.

All at once, I felt as if I might have forgotten something very important.

My hands began to shake uncontrollably.

Chen Zhi’s cold hands covered mine, and I caught the crisp, clean scent of camellias.

He looked at me. This time, the corners of his mouth were clearly lifted, but his brows drooped, and his eyes held a hazy sadness like mist in the rain.

He said, “Forgetting is a good thing for you.”

Chapter 7

Many times, remembering certain things

is far more painful than forgetting them.

Take Chen Zhi, for example. The memories of dying countless times must have inflicted endless psychological trauma on him long ago, which was why he had now turned into a complete idiot who could get killed and still happily gain Favorability.

Setting aside the mandatory capture missions the System had forced on me, I actually liked this world quite a lot.

Before, I hadn’t even graduated from elementary school when the zombie virus broke out and spread across the globe.

During the time I lived as a lone wolf in the apocalypse, my favorite pastime was riding a motorcycle into abandoned schools to ram zombies, then sitting at a broken desk and pretending I was in class.

The school I attended now practically fulfilled every fantasy I had ever had.

There were only five classes a day, three in the morning and two in the afternoon. The cafeteria offered all kinds of desserts and dishes, and there were events all the time.

Whenever the teacher asked if any student wanted to volunteer for an activity, I would always throw both hands into the air. “Leave it to me!”

My classmates all cackled at me, and Chen Zhi laughed too, though in a much more restrained way.

He sat in the back row, propping his chin on his right hand as he watched me. His eyes curved with his smile, and sunlight slipped in through the window, gilding him in a soft golden glow.

“You’re staring at me again. Am I really that good-looking?”

As the vicious young-miss-type supporting female character, I slapped a hand down on Chen Zhi’s desk after class and started giving him trouble.

Chen Zhi gave a small tremble, then looked up at me from below. His clear puppy-dog eyes hit me like a critical strike. “I brought Baobao to school. Do you want to see her? She misses you.”

Baobao was the kitten Chen Zhi had picked up that day. She was soft and fluffy, like a lump of marshmallow toasted to a caramel color.

If he thought he could tempt me with a kitten, he was dead wrong…

Even if…

“Baobao can do a backflip. Do you want to see?”

What kind of normal kitten could do a backflip?

“I want to see!” I nodded hard. This time, Chen Zhi’s smile was not restrained at all. Even his shoulders were shaking. But he was good-looking, so even when he completely lost control of his expression, he was still a feast for the eyes.

After getting my wish and petting the cat, I went home satisfied.

The Little Light Ball blinked on and off beside me. [Host, Host, reporting that Chen Zhi’s current Favorability is 59…]

I raised a hand to cut it off. “No need to recite pi!”

Then I happily went to my room to pack the clothes I would wear for tomorrow’s spring outing.

Hmm, we were going to an amusement park, so should I wear a dress?

But I also wanted to ride the carousel, so I should bring a few extra outfits. The more I packed, the more things piled up, until the System couldn’t stand watching anymore. [Host, you’re not going on vacation.]

Ahem. I did seem to be getting a little overexcited.

But I had never been to an amusement park with electricity before!

The Little Light Ball circled the dresses. [And with all this stuff, how are you going to carry it?]

“Chen Zhi will help me carry it.” The words slipped out as I organized my clothes. The System drifted up, down, left, and right, looking like it wanted to say something but held back.

A crisp tapping sound rang out. I pulled open the curtains, only to see a single white camellia on the windowsill.
