The auction officially began, snapping me out of the memory.

Nan Zhixu sat below, meeting my eyes without the slightest ripple of emotion. One finger tapped softly against his armrest, as though I were a complete stranger. He looked distinguished in his expensive clothes, a serpent-headed staff—the symbol of his authority—resting at his side.

Right. I had kept him as a servant for so long that I had nearly forgotten the noble blood he carried in the serpent clan.

I looked away and spotted the untrainable wolf, along with the two-faced fox who had always lied as easily as he breathed.

Beastfolk were already raising their bidding paddles. One after another they went up, bids coming faster and faster until the price spiraled wildly.

It had already reached ten million star credits.

Having absolutely no instinct for how a person being sold ought to behave, I even found myself feeling wistful.

Had there been inflation over the past century? If prices were still anything like they had been a hundred years ago… Well. Lu Zhi had only cost me two million back then.

Scarcity really did drive up value.

The bidding showed no sign of stopping. Bored, I tipped my head back toward the ceiling, then squeezed my eyes shut against the glare.

“Twenty million.”

That voice was familiar.

My eyes flew open, and I looked toward the speaker.

Sure enough, a pair of icy gray eyes were fixed straight on me.

I swallowed.

Lu Zhi.

That damned wolf.

My knees went a little weak.

The moment he spoke, every other bid died away.

Nan Zhixu turned toward Lu Zhi, whose gaze remained locked on me. Lu Zhi’s lips curved faintly, but the chill between his brows only deepened.

Oh, come on.

Don’t do this to me…

That wolf was definitely planning revenge. I had bought him back then, and he had been so stubborn—so determined not to obey—that I tormented and teased him every day.

Whenever Lu Zhi looked at me, the violence simmering in those gray eyes nearly spilled over. It annoyed me so much that I eventually tied a necktie over his eyes. Out of sight, out of mind. Then I put my hands wherever I pleased.

No one bid again.

Lu Zhi had successfully bought me.
