Chapter 3

Before he could even touch me, I lay flat on the floor, stiff as a board, and stopped moving.

I shut down my breathing and heartbeat systems and entered a state of death.

The most important lesson from Pseudo-human Class was finally giving me a chance to put it into practice!

When harmed by evil humans, we could shut down all running systems and wait until it was safe to restart.

The delivery guy froze. Then he scrambled to his feet in a panic.

He hadn’t even done anything yet. How did she suddenly have no heartbeat? Had she been scared to death?

For the first time, he felt truly wronged.

But at this point, no one would believe him even if he said he was innocent.

A vicious look flashed in his eyes.

Half an hour later, he left the apartment dragging a large suitcase.

Two nights later, I was discovered by an extremely adventurous angler beside a pond. With a flashlight clenched between his teeth, he opened the suitcase with trembling hands.

My hearing had just recovered, and I heard him mumbling indistinctly around the flashlight, “Please don’t be a person. Please don’t be pieces of a person…”

The beam landed on my face. Our eyes met. He let out a scream, dropped the flashlight, and fell on his butt.

But the angler had impressive mental fortitude. His voice was still shaking, but he managed to ask if I was alive.

I blinked and nodded at him.

“Thank you.” In the dim light, I gave him a friendly smile.

When he saw my smile, his arms and legs twitched a few times. Shaking all over, he picked up his phone and called the police.

No! My current identity wouldn’t hold up under investigation. If I was discovered, my assessment would be ruined again!

I had to run.

My motor system hadn’t fully recovered yet, but I had to run fast.

The angler watched with his own eyes as a woman like a drowned ghost dropped to all fours and crawled away at terrifying speed through the darkness.

He sucked in a sharp breath and finally passed out.

Fortunately, he had already called the police before fainting. Someone would find him soon, and he would be safe.

I also wouldn’t end up on the Anomaly Management Bureau’s wanted list for the crime of harming a human.

Once I had a record, even if I passed the assessment, I would be eliminated during the background check. There would be no stable landing for me.

I crawled for ages before gradually regaining the ability to walk normally. Unfortunately, the clothes on my body had been worn to shreds.

I was in rags, my wet, tangled hair plastered to my face, and my expression system had failed to load.

Using the cover of night, I returned home soaked from head to toe.

The place I lived was an old, remote residential complex. The facilities were ancient, the power often went out, and security was far from reliable.

The lights in the stairwell flickered on and off. My right foot had suffered heavy wear during my dark crawling, and considering future repairs, it was no longer suitable for use.

I pressed my legs together and hopped up the stairs one step at a time.

One more flight and I would reach my floor. I could even tilt my head and see a sliver of space in front of my apartment door through the stairwell.

Hm? There was someone at my door.

A man in a delivery worker’s uniform.

A man with a familiar build.

Wasn’t that the evil human who stuffed me into a suitcase and threw me into the river?

The teacher was right. After committing a crime, criminals usually returned to the scene.

The delivery guy left my door with a smug expression, confident that he had left no evidence behind and that no one suspected him.

But he did find one thing strange. After this woman disappeared, her boyfriend hadn’t called the police.

He hadn’t even come home last night.

Humming a cheerful tune, he headed downstairs and ran straight into me before I could dodge.
