Lady in the Mirror - Chapter 1
Chapter 1
Yan Cizhou was still kneeling.
His wedding robes trailed across the floor, his back held perfectly straight, his head never once lifting.
I sat on the edge of the bed, still clutching a corner of my bridal veil.
A Bronze Mirror stood directly across from me.
The woman in the mirror was also sitting on a wedding bed.
She wore bridal attire, her features soft and gentle, her gaze showing not even a hint of surprise as she looked at me.
She looked at Yan Cizhou and lightly raised her hand.
The surface of the mirror didn’t crack, nor did it fog up.
Yet Yan Cizhou’s shoulders trembled slightly, as if she had actually touched him.
My throat tightened, and I forced the words out.
“Yan Cizhou, I’m the one you married. Why are you bowing to her?”
He didn’t turn around.
The woman in the mirror’s smile deepened.
“This girl has quite a temper.”
“She doesn’t seem like someone raised by the Wen Family.”
Her voice was soft, her words trailing off slowly.
She didn’t seem like a ghost; she seemed more like the true mistress of the Yan Family.
Yan Cizhou said in a low voice, “Her name is Wen Zhaowan.”
The woman looked at me.
“Zhaowan.”
She spoke the name slowly, as if afraid that saying it too loudly would startle someone.
“The name sounds gentle enough.”
“The person… not so much.”
I pulled back the corner of the quilt to get out of bed.
The moment my feet hit the floor, the woman in the mirror suddenly frowned.
“Don’t let her go far.”
Only then did Yan Cizhou turn around.
He reached out and clamped his hand around my wrist.
“Get back on the bed.”
His hand was freezing.
And his grip was forceful.
I gasped in pain.
“Let go.”
Seeing me wince, his fingers loosened slightly.
But he didn’t release me.
“Don’t go too far from this Mirror tonight.”
I laughed out of sheer frustration.
“You’re paying respects to an old flame on our wedding night, and I’m not even allowed to stand up?”
He remained silent.
The woman in the mirror sighed.
“Cizhou, be gentle.”
“She’s in pain.”
Yan Cizhou whispered, “I didn’t mean to hurt her.”
I stared at him.
“Then what exactly do you intend to do?”
He finally looked at me.
It was only then that I noticed his eyes were bloodshot.
He didn’t look like a groom.
He looked like someone keeping watch over a funeral that refused to end.
He said, “Wen Zhaowan, if you want to live, listen to me just this once.”
I asked, “And what about the one in the mirror?”
The woman in the mirror answered for him.
“Little girl, I’m having him stop you because nothing can be allowed to happen to you yet.”
Her voice was still gentle.
But the sound of it sent a chill down my spine.
Someone who truly meant me no harm wouldn’t be waiting for me to enter the room on my wedding night.
