Let Him Be the Moon - Chapter 1
Chapter 1
The hall was deathly silent.
A long while passed before a string of question marks drifted across my vision.
From his seat in the imperial court, the Son of Heaven spoke in a trembling voice.
“You want to… to marry a young master from Dingyuan Marquis’s Manor?”
I answered with a resounding yes.
The Son of Heaven gripped the dragon throne and took a deep breath.
“I fear the age difference may be somewhat inappropriate.”
“And the Marquis of Dingyuan is an upright man. I doubt he would agree.”
I said nothing.
I merely touched the military token at my waist.
The Son of Heaven’s tone changed at once. “However, the Marquis of Dingyuan has always been loyal to his sovereign and devoted to the state. I am sure he will understand.”
“He has two sons, born on the same day.”
“One is proper and unyielding. The other is quiet and reserved.”
“Which one does my beloved subject prefer?”
That question stumped me.
Because I was too embarrassed to say I wanted both.
After hesitating again and again, I finally said, “Then I’ll take the younger one.”
The moment my words fell, more comments floated past my eyes.
“I don’t get it. Why did the emperor suddenly agree to the female supporting character’s request?”
“To the person above, the female supporting character commands three hundred thousand troops. Forget the male lead’s son-even if she asked for his own son, he’d grit his teeth and hand him over.”
“Poor male lead. After divorcing the female lead, he raised those two children all by himself, wiping their asses and cleaning up their piss from infancy.”
“Just when both kids finally grew up promising, they have to marry the female supporting character… This is really a wild boar rooting up fine cabbage.”
“The female supporting character really is vicious to the extreme. The grudges of the previous generation, and she just has to drag the next generation into it…”
Chapter Two
Shen Changhuai and I did, indeed, have an old grudge between us.
Twenty years ago.
He fell off a cliff and lost all his memories.
I was the one who picked him up and brought him home, dressed his wounds, fed him, and washed his clothes.
So when he woke up, he held my hand and refused to let go.
“Miss, your kindness is beyond repayment.”
“All I can do is pledge myself to you and repay a fraction of it.”
Back then, I was too young and too easily bewitched by beauty.
I was illiterate, had never read any romance scripts, and didn’t know that a man you picked up off the roadside couldn’t be trusted.
I only felt as if I’d stumbled into the greatest bargain under heaven.
So I hastily married him. The two of us draped ourselves in red cloth and bowed to heaven and earth.
After we married, he took care of all the chores and was the very picture of a virtuous spouse.
In bed, he was tender and attentive as well.
He called me his benefactor with every breath and couldn’t keep his hands off me.
For a while, I lived like an immortal.
Until Shen Changhuai recovered his memories.
He remembered that he was the Heir of the Marquis of Dingyuan and that there was a hereditary title waiting for him at home.
The tender affection vanished from his face, and he looked at me coldly. “Miss Li, I already have a fiancée from a prestigious family. I must return and marry her.”
“Here are one hundred taels of gold. Our statuses are worlds apart, and our fate has come to an end. Do not pester me.”
When I thought about how there would be no one to wash my feet anymore, my eyes reddened, and I said all right.
Shen Changhuai reached out, as if he wanted to catch my tears.
But he restrained himself and lowered his eyes. “I know your feelings for me are sincere.”
“After I marry, I can take you as my concubine…”
Who wanted to be his concubine?
With tears in my eyes, I thumped him twice with my fists.
Shen Changhuai spat out a mouthful of blood and said coolly,
“You are merely a village woman, and I have already taken your purity. If you do not rely on me in this life, what else can you do?”
I wanted to curse him out, but I truly lacked education.
After thinking for a long time, I finally squeezed out one line.
“Don’t you dare look down on a poor young woman!”
And with that, we parted ways for good.
