Chapter 32

Sensing Cynthia approach, Vernel split the last Nightmare Beast in two with a single slash. Then she sheathed her blade and turned around.

“Everything in this area is First Order. The Second Order ones seem to be in the deeper caves.”

“Mm.” Cynthia glanced toward the cave leading farther in, swept the piles of Nightmare Beast corpses into her Storage Ring, and decided not to get greedy. “They were probably frightened by the Demon Shark. Let’s leave before they have time to react. As for the Moonlight Stone, we can look somewhere else.”

“There is Moonlight Stone right here.” Vernel walked toward the coral grass covered in bloodstains and burned away every last branch and leaf of coral.

Cynthia moved closer and looked. Sure enough, it was Moonlight Stone giving off a silver glow. “Looks like this trip wasn’t completely unlucky after all.”

Vernel fell silent for a moment, then suddenly said, “…I dragged you down this time. Sorry.”

Cynthia put away the Moonlight Stone, her expression calm. “What do you mean, dragged me down? Aren’t we teammates?”

Vernel froze.

She was used to hearing Cynthia casually spout extreme things like dying together or mutual destruction, but this was the first time she had said something that actually sounded responsible.

Although Cynthia was the team leader, it somehow felt… rather out of character.

Vernel lowered her eyes and said nothing, but the faintest hint of a smile curved her lips.

Cynthia, however, had only said it offhandedly and didn’t take it to heart at all.

After putting away the Moonlight Stone, she gestured and said, “Let’s go. All that’s left is the Phantom Moon Fruit. Once we’ve collected that last ocean material, we can finally leave this damned place.”

Vernel answered, “Mm.”
After leaving the Coral Forest, Cynthia and Vernel circled more than halfway around the seafloor. It wasn’t until the Water Avoidance Pill was about to lose its effect that they finally found the Phantom Moon Fruit.

Once they finished gathering it, the two wasted no time and immediately swam back to shore.

The greatest difference between day and night on Moonlight Island was that at night, the sky turned as dazzling as the Milky Way.

After spending nearly two days underwater, Cynthia was exhausted as well. Without caring about her image, she lay down on the silver beach.

“I’m going to rest for a bit,” she said.

Vernel gave a simple hum of acknowledgment and walked off into the distance.

Cynthia didn’t bother watching where she was going. She lay flat on the sand and stared up at the sky.

The flickering starlight was extraordinarily brilliant. Compared to fireworks that vanished in an instant, it seemed even brighter.

The wound on her arm throbbed faintly. It was probably because she had been bitten by a poisonous water snake earlier while gathering Moonlight Fruit.

Cynthia badly wanted to ignore it, but if the poison spread to her heart, not even a divine-grade potion would be able to save her.

Left with no choice, she sat up, took out a short knife, and cut away the flesh that had already turned black.

Cold sweat beaded on her forehead. Every reaction in her body was telling her it hurt.

But she had long since gotten used to it.

The Ghost, who had not spoken for the past few days, popped out. “Why are you always getting hurt? You look so pitiful.”

Cynthia didn’t react much to the sudden voice. “Maybe my luck was stolen.”

Cynthia had only been joking, but the Ghost took it seriously. “I actually think that’s possible. Who gets unlucky as often as you do? Let me check.”

The Ghost had previously been locked in her Sea of Consciousness with Spirit Binding Magic, but now that the bindings had been undone, it could come and go freely.

It circled Cynthia twice and observed her carefully for a while before saying seriously, “No, that’s not it. Your luck is below average, but it doesn’t look like it was stolen by someone else.”

It pondered for a moment, then said, “Looks like you were simply born unlucky. In other words, your fate is a bit like a combination of Heavenly Scourge and Seven Killings.”

“?”

Cynthia, who had still been somewhat interested when she heard the first half, now very much wanted to tell it to get lost. She smiled and maintained the last shreds of her dignity. “You’re getting rather noisy. Dismissed.”
Neither Heavenly Scourge nor Seven Killings was anything good on its own, much less when the two were combined.

Only belatedly did the Ghost realize that what it had said was a little too blunt, and it hurriedly added, “Don’t get me wrong. I’m not mocking you.”

“You would’ve been better off not saying that.” Cynthia removed the last piece of rotten flesh, then sprinkled medicinal powder over the wound. “Speaking of which, you’re a Ghost. How can you still see the strength of someone’s fortune?”

The Ghost said smugly, “I’m a descendant of the Shaman God’s line. I was born with a bloodline ability. If I had to describe it, it’s probably something like seeing through falsehoods and discerning things without form. Though yours truly is already dead and has turned into a Ghost, this ability hasn’t completely disappeared.”

A shaman…

Cynthia suddenly realized she still hadn’t asked for its name. “What’s your name?”

The Ghost froze.

It had never expected that, even after death, it would still have the chance to mention its name to someone.

You Xia smiled and said, “You Xia Prometheus.”

Prometheus…

Cynthia repeated it silently in her heart, feeling that it sounded somewhat familiar.

All at once, a passage of text flashed through her mind.

Cynthia’s hands paused in the middle of bandaging. In a rather uncertain tone, she asked, “…You wouldn’t happen to be the last person in the Saint Lanfa Empire with Divine Shaman blood, would you?”

You Xia smiled. “That would be me.”

Cynthia fell silent. Then fell silent again.

There was a sense of… absurdity to it.

Back when the original owner had studied at the Imperial Academy, information regarding the Prometheus family had been considered key knowledge.

As a Divine Shaman family, the Prometheus family had been an exceedingly mysterious existence for tens of thousands of years.

Tens of thousands of years ago, there had once appeared a Divine Sequence practitioner with a sequence rank of 1-the first head of the Prometheus family.

It was said that the Saint Lanfa Empire’s ability to unite more than half the continent and develop into the powerful Empire that no one dared invade today was half due to him.

In terms of status, the family was comparable to a Duke family.

And those of this family’s direct bloodline were born with innate abilities. Once they reached a certain level, they could even predict the future directly.

There were even rumors that they could ignore the rules entirely, travel back into the past, and change the future.

Whether true or false, no one knew. In any case, this family was just that powerful an existence.

However, they had never been ostentatious. After the continental war ended, they immediately withdrew from the world and concealed their name.

To this day, no one knew the family’s exact location.

And the reason You Xia was called the “last Divine Shaman” was also because of a prophecy left behind by the first family head.

The general meaning was that there could only ever be one Divine Shaman bloodline inheritor in each generation, and the inheritance would one day come to an end. The approximate time indicated by the prophecy was around a hundred years ago, which happened to be close to the time of You Xia’s death.

Cynthia tested the waters. “If I didn’t misunderstand the prophecy left by your first family head, it seems to have been referring to your generation?”

Those words made You Xia stiffen.

It stopped talking. It even silently slipped into the Sea of Consciousness and played dead.

If before it had only been a guess, then after seeing his reaction, Cynthia was certain.

The first family head’s prophecy had indeed been correct…

Cynthia finished wrapping the bandage, then took out the Bone Key from the cave on the deserted island. “You said this key is the switch that leads to your Family Forbidden Ground, right? Are you sure I won’t be hunted down if I take it to your family? Like being mistaken for a descendant of the culprit who killed you, for example.”

“…Don’t worry. There won’t be any so-called hunt.” You Xia’s mood suddenly faded. “As early as a hundred years ago, I was already the last survivor. Now, I suppose the family can be considered completely destroyed. You don’t need to have any misgivings.”

Cynthia: ?!
