Chapter 36

The first few matches were rather dull. Perhaps it was because they had been enrolled for less than two months, but it was obvious that most team members did not coordinate particularly well with one another.

Their realms, too, were not impressive enough to inspire fear.

Cynthia opened her Light Screen, logged into the campus network, and checked the final results of the individual matches.

She went through the information from first place all the way down to last.

Judging by the results of the individual matches, the highest realm among the new students was currently First Order Nine-Star: the Divine Sequence from Myriad Forms Academy, ranked Sequence 16.

Second place was a student from Star Track Academy, Divine Sequence 11. Her realm was First Order Eight-Star.

Third place… was Lomita, who had just appeared earlier. She was also a Divine Sequence, Sequence 12, and currently First Order Eight-Star.

There were fewer Divine Sequence students than Cynthia had expected. Out of four hundred new students, there were only sixty-nine Divine Sequences in total.

Among the new students, only Rafael was ranked in the top ten Sequences. That alone showed just how rare they were.

The rest of the students were basically mid-range Spirit Sequences.

Of course… aside from the string of bottom-ranked Sequences in their Class 659, no one among the new students had a Sequence lower than 600.

Even the lowest-ranked student was 579.

Cynthia could already imagine the scene when she and her teammates took the field and got mocked by the entire crowd.

“Next up, Tinglan Academy’s Wind Feather Team versus Star Track Academy’s Red Wolf Team!”

As soon as the host’s voice fell, the crowd in the stands began to stir.

“Holy crap, Tinglan’s team is insane. They’re all Divine Sequences!”

“Uh, true, but I feel like Red Wolf has the advantage in average strength, right? Red Wolf’s captain got second place in the individual matches.”

“Exactly. And Red Wolf Team’s overall strength isn’t weak either: one Five-Star and three Six-Stars. Wind Feather Team’s captain is an Eight-Star just like the opposing captain, sure, but Wind Feather has two Five-Stars, and the remaining two are only Six-Stars. Put them side by side, and Wind Feather is clearly at a disadvantage.”

The conversation caught Cynthia’s attention. She closed the Light Screen and turned her gaze back to the Magic Crystal Screen, which had enlarged the details of the arena.

She had intended to see how strong the Divine Sequence who had ranked second in the individual matches was, only to discover that Wind Feather Team’s captain was actually Lomita.

What a coincidence…

Both sides summoned their Spirit Weapons.

Lomita’s Spirit Weapon took the form of a Glazed Umbrella.

Its ribs were silver-purple, and its canopy was made of glaze.

Silver patterns wound around the umbrella handle, and a pale purple glazed bell hung from it. One could easily imagine how clear and delicate its chime would sound as it swayed.

Meanwhile, the Red Wolf Team captain’s Spirit Weapon took the form of a White-blue Rapier whose defining feature was the wings of a flying bird.

Judging by the forms of their weapons, both of them were probably better at close combat.

After all, a Sequence holder’s main combat direction was also influenced by the form of their Spirit Weapon.

Some leaned toward heavy offense, some toward support, some toward control, defense, thrusting attacks, and so on.

The two were at the same realm. Unfortunately, in terms of Sequence, Lomita was one rank lower.

And just as the others had said, there was also a bit of a gap between their teammates’ strength.

Cynthia was somewhat curious as to how Lomita would choose to balance out this disadvantaged match.
The match began.

In the arena.

Lomita attacked first. The instant the Glazed Umbrella opened in her hand, pinkish-purple Magic Element burst into a dazzling glow. The Magic Element condensed into violet flame magic and poured from the umbrella’s surface, sweeping straight toward Red Wolf Team’s captain, Fino.

As someone in the same realm and also a Divine Sequence, Fino’s reaction speed was naturally extremely fast.

She twisted her wrist, and the White-blue Rapier spun lightly in her hand. With one slash, she released a chilling sword aura that forcibly broke through the oncoming flames.

At the same time, she tapped the ground with the tip of her foot and rose into the air, her rapier carrying a fierce wind as it stabbed straight toward Lomita’s heart.

Lomita did not panic. She bent sharply at the waist and dodged the attack.
Her left hand locked around the umbrella handle. A ring of silver metal plates, sharp as blades, suddenly appeared along the canopy. With a light flick of her wrist, the razor-edged plates shot straight toward Fino.

Fino had already experienced this move in the singles match. Her brows drew together slightly as she raised her sword to block.

But at that very instant, Lomita changed her offensive pattern. Her wrist turned in a graceful arc, and the umbrella canopy abruptly burst apart.

Dozens of purple glazed shards, thin as blades, transformed into hidden weapons like throwing knives. They swept past Fino, who stood at the very front of the line, and shot toward the four teammates behind her.

Fino’s pupils contracted. She tried to turn back and help them, but Lomita gave her no chance.

Using the umbrella ribs as a sword, Lomita stabbed fiercely at Fino.

The umbrella rib grazed Fino’s arm, cutting open a bloody line.

Lomita curved her eyes in a smile. “Sister Fino, if you want to save your teammates, you should take care of yourself first.”

“Captain, don’t worry about us!” came the urgent voices of her Red Wolf Team teammates from behind.

Looking at Lomita, who made no effort to hide her smile, Fino curled her lips into a cold sneer and thrust her longsword forward. “You really are as cunning as ever.”

“You’re no slouch either, Sister Fino.” Lomita did not deny it. Seeing that the umbrella blades had successfully forced the other four back, she snapped her fingers. Ten separated umbrella blades instantly flew back to her side, reassembling into shape and blocking Fino’s attack.

Out of the corner of her eye, Fino glanced at her teammates. Because of Lomita, they had been forced to give up the initiative, turning their original advantage into a disadvantage.

Although one member of Wind Feather Team was only at the five-star realm, everyone seemed to have forgotten that their overall sequence was higher than Red Wolf Team’s.

The tacit cooperation between their members was also far beyond theirs…

The moment Fino grasped the situation, she immediately changed her battle plan.

Magic Element gathered in her hand as she released her first skill.

“Snowfield Freeze!”

With a soft cry, the surrounding temperature plunged. Countless ice spikes abruptly stabbed up from the ground.

The support on the opposite side immediately released a skill to amplify her, doubling the power of the ice spikes.

Lomita had not expected her to release a Sequence Skill so quickly. Her eyes narrowed, and she stopped holding back.

She flung out the Glazed Umbrella in her hand.

“Thousand Mechanism Thread, bind.”

“Flower Soul: Annihilation.”

The two skills were unleashed at the same time. The umbrella canopy expanded several times over and spun in midair, while threads lashed out to coil around all five opponents.

At the same time, the annihilating flower rain from the second skill continued to fall, corroding and melting the rising ice spikes until not even a trace remained.

Her teammates were not idle either. They immediately released dual skills to amplify her.

The offensive was too fierce. Fino hurriedly summoned her second skill in response.

But the Wind Feather Team teammate responsible for the main assault had already taken the chance to conceal themselves and launch a sneak attack on the back line.

Soon, with the help of the annihilating flower rain and the Thousand Mechanism Thread, they eliminated Red Wolf Team’s support mage.

The team everyone had called disadvantaged had reversed the situation in that instant, and the arena erupted in a wave of fervent cheers.
Cynthia, having witnessed all of this, looked at her teammates. “If it were you, how confident would you be in avoiding the other side’s attack?”

Vernel did not answer right away. Instead, she asked, “What’s the highest possible?”

Cynthia said, “Ten out of ten.”

Vernel said, “Then ten out of ten.”

Cynthia: …So she meant she could avoid it completely.

Eli said calmly, “I wouldn’t give the opponent a chance to get close, so the premise doesn’t apply.”

The invisible man, Sangmo, was comparatively low-key. “…Five out of ten.”

Cynthia looked at Richter beside her. “What about you?”

Richter half-lifted his eyelids and glanced at the arena before saying, “Assuming we’re at the same realm, the chance of avoiding it completely and preserving myself is fifty percent. The chance of taking the opponent down with me is one hundred percent.”

Cynthia’s eyelid twitched.

That answer was really… ingenious.

Mutual destruction. Mm. Very much in line with his personality.
