Chapter 117

Hua Suihe and Ye Susheng spent the night in the desert. Early the next morning, Ye Susheng led Hua Suihe toward the Inner Domain.

Sparse houses began to appear ahead. Each household was surrounded by a fence, looking as though they used to keep livestock, though none were visible now. It was unclear if anyone still lived in those houses.

Ye Susheng could no longer use her teleportation to shuttle them along. She stopped on the open road and walked side by side with Hua Suihe.

They reached an area where the houses were slightly more clustered. Hua Suihe pointed to a small sign standing by the road next to the houses and asked, “Is that a bus stop over there?”

Ye Susheng looked in the direction of her finger and nodded. “Hua Hua, should we go over and wait for a bus?”

For this final stretch to reach the edge of the desert and enter the Inner Domain, players could only leave on foot or via transportation. Just like passing through the Tunnel, there were no shortcuts to be taken.

It was a hassle. Hua Hua hadn’t eaten breakfast yet, and they were going to be delayed like this.

Hua Suihe led her toward the bus stop. Perhaps it was because it was still so early, but the surroundings were as quiet as if the place were uninhabited.

Just as that thought crossed her mind, the doors of several houses along the road opened one after another.

Some people came out holding hoes, looking ready to go work the fields; others held brooms, seemingly coming out to sweep the dust from their doorsteps.

Upon suddenly spotting two outsiders, several pairs of eyes turned toward them.

As soon as they reached the bus stop, a few people quickly surrounded them. They held various farming tools, their skin was dark, and they were tall and imposing.

They didn’t display anything unusual, but their attitude was far from friendly. “Where did you two come from?” one demanded.

They had just managed to create an aggressive atmosphere when the tension broke in the next second. A large man holding a hoe accidentally dropped it on his own foot and let out a sharp scream.

Everyone else simultaneously placed their tools on the ground, seemingly worried they might suffer a similar accident.

An Auntie holding a broom spoke with a relatively milder tone. “Young ladies, are you waiting for the bus to the city?”

“Yes, Auntie. There’s no schedule written on this sign. Do you know when the bus arrives?”

“It’s coming soon, very soon.” The Auntie had no desire for small talk. She gave a perfunctory answer and picked up her broom to return to sweeping in front of her house.

The others also dispersed one by one, going back to their own business.

Hua Suihe looked toward both ends of the road, but there wasn’t a single vehicle in sight. She couldn’t get a specific time, and the local residents didn’t seem particularly interested in talking to them.

Ye Susheng pulled Hua Suihe over to a wooden bench and sat her down, instructing, “Hua Hua, sit here for a moment. I’ll go ahead and see if a bus is coming. Wait for me here, okay?”

Hua Suihe blinked, then slowly nodded. “Alright. Come back quickly.”

Ye Susheng gave her a quick kiss on the cheek, then her figure blurred and she vanished with the wind.

After Ye Susheng left, the residents who had seemed disinterested moments ago turned their gazes back toward Hua Suihe. Their predatory eyes were like hungry wolves spotting meat, though for the moment, no one made a move.

Hua Suihe seemed oblivious, appearing relaxed as she stared blankly in the direction Ye Susheng had gone.

Two minutes passed. Ye Susheng hadn’t returned, and some people were starting to get restless.

A few of them exchanged silent glances and moved toward Hua Suihe in a coordinated, silent circle.

Suddenly, a deep, thick voice rang out from behind Hua Suihe. “Young lady, you won’t catch a bus waiting like that.”
Hua Suihe turned back to look at him. This person looked very strange; a slick, dark purple tentacle grew from his neck, wrapping around it. He had only one eye, and when he grinned, his teeth were of varying sizes. He wore a tattered old undershirt and looked like he smelled terrible.

It wasn’t just him. The people surrounding her now were the same group of residents from before, but every one of them had changed. They looked bizarre.

However, Hua Suihe didn’t discriminate against them. She still looked at them as if they were ordinary people and asked, “Uncle, are you saying I won’t be able to catch a bus here?”

The old man’s lip twitched. He couldn’t understand why his appearance failed to frighten this young girl. His eye darted around, and suddenly, a black, foul-smelling liquid began to ooze from his body.

This chemical attack did indeed make Hua Suihe frown and stand up to step back. Her reaction made the old man a bit excited. “You’re afraid of me? Are you afraid of me?”

Hua Suihe shook her head. She wanted to protect his self-esteem, but she really didn’t have the heart for it. She said honestly, “No, it’s just that the smell of sweat on you is too strong. It’s a bit overwhelming.”

The old man: …

“Move, move!” Someone shoved the old man aside. This newcomer was a real heavyweight in the looks department-half of a toad’s head had been grafted onto his own. Half was a human face, while the other half had bumpy, uneven skin like a toad, complete with green spots.

Seeing his appearance, Hua Suihe was indeed stunned for a moment. What had this person gone through? He was truly the most… undignified Mutated Entity she had ever seen. She let out a silent “wow.”

He raised his chin proudly, his throat swelling to twice its size, making him look even more like a toad. “Scared now?”

Hua Suihe bit her lip, her expression hard to describe. Even with all these monsters and demons in front of her, she still found herself distracted. Why wasn’t Ye Susheng back yet? Surely she wouldn’t have to pull a bus all the way back from the city, would she?

Hua Suihe’s indifferent attitude made the people in front of her fly into a humiliated rage. “Hey! Look me in the eye!”

An Auntie pushed the toad-head aside. “Move over, let me try.”

“Don’t bother, really,” Hua Suihe waved her hand in refusal, returning to the previous topic. “Why can’t I catch a bus here? Have they stopped running or something?”

The Auntie’s eyes nearly rolled out of her head as she cursed, “Is the bus the only thing in your eyes!”

Hua Suihe crouched down where she was and sighed. “It’s mainly because my girlfriend has been gone for so long. She can’t possibly be driving a bus back from the city, can she?”

The crowd: …Lunatic.

“Hua Hua, Hua Hua?”

Hua Suihe snapped her eyes open and blinked sluggishly. The first thing she saw was Ye Susheng’s face. She was currently leaning against Ye Susheng’s shoulder, her body feeling weak.

Ye Susheng looked a bit worried. “Are you very sleepy, Hua Hua? You just fell asleep.”

Hua Suihe tilted her head to look toward where the residents had been. No one was there anymore. Every household had its doors shut tight. She looked up at the sun; it was still morning.

When did she enter the dream? She couldn’t quite tell.

Just then, a bus approached from the distance. Ye Susheng took her hand and helped her up. “Hua Hua, a bus is coming. Let’s go.”

Hua Suihe nodded and asked her, “Did you go looking for a bus just now?”

“No. I’ve been sitting on the bench with you the whole time. You fell asleep the moment you sat down; you really gave me a scare.” Ye Susheng lowered her eyes, her worried gaze lingering on Hua Suihe. “Did you dream about something, Hua Hua?”

“I did dream about some small animals. It’s nothing, let’s go.”
