Chapter 147

Ye Susheng was a woman of action. The moment she said she was going to dismantle that scrap metal, she already had a tool clenched in her hand, ready to strike at any time.

A wisp of ethereal Black Cotton Candy wrapped around Hua Suihe’s waist, keeping her within two steps. Then it explained, “Hua Hua, there are some Big Iron Bugs underground. Destroying all of them will take some time, so it will be safer for Hua Hua to stay by my side.”

“Big Iron Bugs?” Hua Suihe wasn’t confused for long, because the black mist burrowed into the ground and yanked one out. The long one among the Mechanical Bugs crackled with electricity all over its body. It was clearly already scrapped.

More were dragged out one after another, but they were not all long and slender. Some were curled up into balls, as large as a small sedan, big enough to carry people inside.

These things moved extremely fast underground. Once the people controlling them realized what was happening here, they hurriedly activated the evacuation protocol, and quite a few successfully slipped away.

In the control room, Shanhu did not react in time. In the blink of an eye, she had lost five Big Iron Bugs.

Hadn’t Ye Susheng failed to notice them last time? Besides, the Mechanical Bugs were hidden deep underground, lying completely still in ambush. How could she just pluck them out like that?

How was anyone supposed to play if she wasn’t nerfed?

How were they supposed to capture Hua Suihe now?

But at the moment, there was something else she needed to worry about. The floor beneath her feet seemed to have shaken.

The other players downstairs, who had been standing in front of the big screen and watching the situation outside, were also scared senseless. Although there were thirty floors between the surface and this place, if the outside was breached, would those thirty floors even matter?

“Is there an Anomaly attack?!”

“No, it’s Ye Susheng attacking!”

“Isn’t that Peanut? Isn’t she a player? Why isn’t she protecting the Safe Zone? Why is she standing with Ye Susheng instead?”

“Fuck! Stop watching and get to every station to activate the highest-level defense systems! We’re so damn screwed!”

Everyone ran off on their own toward the various floors to activate the defense systems.

Pei Ying and Xia Moyi opened the control room door from the outside. Shanhu turned back to look at them warily. “It’s you?”

Pei Ying’s expression was grim. He strode toward her, shouldered her away from the center of the console, and swiped across the blue screen. “This is the highest authority control room. Open the master defense system.”

Shanhu immediately shoved him away and stopped him, her eyes filled with a cold light. “No.”

Pei Ying, forced aside, looked furious. He snapped, “If we don’t activate the defenses, the Safe Zone will fall.”

Shanhu paid no attention to his anger. She guarded the console and refused to let him approach. “Activating full defense is what will truly make this place fall. When that happens, the passageways leading outside will be completely sealed. Everyone will be trapped here. Isn’t that just waiting to die all the same?”

Xia Moyi let out a scoff and mocked, “What a joke. You say that like we still have a chance to get out.”

Shanhu looked toward her, her eyes narrowing slightly, danger written all over her face. “So you aren’t loyal to the Agency either.”

Xia Moyi planted her hands on her hips and spat at her. “Thriller Research Agency? Please. You’re more like a Thriller Believer gathering place.”

“And all that talk about keeping an escape route open? I think you’ve got your own agenda. Stop pretending you’re so selfless and noble.”

Shanhu did not deny it. When Pei Ying shoved her aside and tried to operate the screen, he discovered that the display had stopped responding. It was as though it had been locked, leaving him unable to perform any action at all.

“Are you insane?!”

Shanhu stumbled a step from the shove, but she did not look the slightest bit disheveled. She calmly straightened her collar, exuding a placid sort of madness. “What right does a traitor like you have to question me? If it weren’t for a useless piece of trash like you, I never would have had to make this trip in the first place.”
“Every last one of you is useless. How long has it been since the mission to bring Hua Suihe back was issued? And where is she?”

“Teacher placed such high hopes in you, yet not only did you fail to complete your mission, you actually betrayed the Agency.”

Xia Moyi rolled her eyes, furious at the speech. Teacher this, Teacher that. That Dr. Quan was the creepiest one of all, and the disciples he trained weren’t right in the head either. Birds of a feather, the lot of them.

Pei Ying had no interest in arguing with her. He tried to break the lock on the screen, only for two robots to appear out of thin air and kick him away.

Shanhu’s face was full of smug triumph. The robots aimed their pitch-black gun barrels at the two of them, forcing them out the door before activating a barrier that sealed them outside the control room.

“Since I can’t truly kill you two children of fortune inside the dungeon, I won’t waste my energy. Open your eyes and watch carefully. In this dungeon that’s destined to collapse, let’s see whether or not I get what I want.”

Xia Moyi hammered her fists against the glass door and cursed viciously.

“You think you’ll get what you want? Like hell you will!” Xia Moyi was usually emotionally stable, but ever since entering this trash Agency, the sight of these people’s faces made her blood boil.

Some time ago, she had entered the Agency as a woman of fortune, and on the very first day, she met Dr. Quan.

Dr. Quan had been extremely interested in her genes. Although she hadn’t been dissected or abducted, he had still drawn several tubes of her blood.

Dr. Quan had casually joked that she bore some resemblance to Hua Suihe, which had sent a chill down her spine. But she still hadn’t fully figured out his true purpose in wanting to bring Hua Suihe back.

It definitely wasn’t as simple as drawing blood for genetic research.

She hadn’t been in the Agency for long and couldn’t access its deeper secrets, so she had never had a chance to pass any useful information to Hua Suihe.

Then she had entered this dungeon, and it was only through Pei Ying that she had vaguely touched on part of the truth.

Dr. Quan wanted to control Ye Susheng by controlling Hua Suihe. He also wanted to study the secret behind Hua Suihe’s ability to coexist with Anomaly. Beyond that, he definitely had other goals she still didn’t know about.

Dr. Quan loved to spout slogans about opposing the Thriller and protecting humanity’s survival, but in reality, he was a Thriller Believer wearing a human mask. And it wasn’t just him. Most of the people in the Agency weren’t normal.

Thankfully, she hadn’t stayed there long before being dragged into the dungeon. That so-called vaccine they injected into her had made her vomit and suffer diarrhea, and it had taken her a full three days to recover.

“We can’t let her succeed.” Thinking of her own experience, Xia Moyi was even less willing to stand by and watch Hua Suihe get captured by them.

“Didn’t she refuse to lock the passage? Then we’re going out.”

Pei Ying froze, then looked at her in confusion. “Me?”

“Are you going or not?”

Pei Ying didn’t understand. “What good will going out do us?”

Xia Moyi ignored him. “We’ll die in here anyway. If you won’t go, I will.”

Seeing Xia Moyi hurry off alone toward the passage leading upward and out, Pei Ying hesitated where he stood for a moment before running in the direction she had gone.

Forget it. It wasn’t like he was that eager to clear the dungeon anyway. Whether he died inside or outside made no difference.

Meanwhile, outside, Ye Susheng and Hua Suihe were busy destroying the mechanical head that was reinforced like a fortress. After ten minutes of effort, the round mechanical head had already caved in.

Hua Suihe held a remote control, using it to operate the high-tech equipment she had exchanged for in midair. Shells rained down as if they cost nothing.

With her help, the demolition of the Safe Zone sped up by a whole three seconds.
