Chapter 61

Hua Suihe was willing to talk to Ye Susheng, but for several nights in a row, she wouldn’t let the other woman touch her. At most, they just slept in each other’s arms.

Ye Susheng couldn’t “eat” Hua Hua, but she didn’t dare cross any lines either. She could only use every trick in the book to stay glued to Hua Suihe’s side every day.

The seven-day break passed quickly.

At noon, Ye Susheng took Hua Suihe onto a private car headed for the countryside.

It took three hours to transition from the wide highways to winding backroads. The further they went, the more remote it became. The car had been heading downhill until they reached a level stretch of road lined with clusters of old, tile-roofed houses.

The village was nestled in a valley. The car stopped by a stone monument engraved with the village’s name.

The two of them stepped out of the car.

“Xishi Village?” Hua Suihe leaned one hand against the massive stone, her face a bit pale.

She had been in the car for too long and was feeling a bit motion-sick.

Ye Susheng hurried to support her, looking worried. “How are you feeling, Hua Hua? Are you dizzy?”

Hua Suihe shook her head weakly. “I’m fine. I’ll be okay after standing for a bit.”

The sun was just beginning to set, radiating the last of the day’s warmth. A layer of golden light coated the grey-tiled roofs. The entire village was excessively quiet; there were no pedestrians on the road, no barking dogs or meowing cats, and every household had its doors tightly shut.

Hua Suihe withdrew her gaze, looking puzzled. “Does no one live in this village?”

“They do,” Ye Susheng said, supporting her. “I’ll take Hua Hua to where we’re staying.”

Hua Suihe took two deep breaths of fresh air to recover slightly, then started walking with her. “Let’s go.”

Ye Susheng led her further in, passing the front doors of various houses.

Halfway there, Hua Suihe noticed that Ye Susheng was once again wearing the traditional Chinese wedding dress she had worn when the mission was first issued.

Her smooth white hair cascaded down her back, fluttering in the gentle breeze. Small bells hung from the red sash tied around the waist of her red wedding dress, emitting a crisp jingling sound with every step she took.

The sound of the bells was the only noise to be heard in the village.

Hua Suihe dazed for a moment and stepped on a small pebble, nearly tripping. She let out a startled cry and gripped Ye Susheng’s arm to steady herself.

“Whoa, that gave me a fright. I almost fell.”

Ye Susheng reached back to grasp her wrist, then slid her palm down to interlock their fingers. Her voice was soft and sweet, like a lingering breeze brushing against Hua Suihe’s ear. “Hua Hua is so silly~”

Hua Suihe’s ear tingled with a sudden numbness. She shot a wary glare back at her, only to meet eyes that were inexplicably enchanting.

“What are you doing?”

Ye Susheng tilted her head in confusion. “Does Hua Hua not like hearing that?”

Hua Suihe looked back at the road ahead and pinched her own ear, muttering under her breath, “It’s weird.”

[Peanut’s Livestream Room is open! We’re here, we’re here, Hua Hua!]

[Where is this now? Is my Hua going to the countryside for further studies?]

[Why is Ye Susheng wearing a wedding dress? Is she going to have a wedding with Hua Hua here?]

[Streamer Level 4 has unlocked a new Gift Bar. Tipping a 48,888 Luxury Package. I won’t allow Hua Hua to participate in an ‘X-Change’ program in the countryside.]

[Welcome home, tycoon Gu Gu! You really spoil her, Gu.]

[Why is there no one in this village? It’s almost dark.]

[I’ve missed you so much after seven days. Another day of looking forward to Hua Hua replying to the bullet chat.]

After walking deep into the alleys for an unknown amount of time, Ye Susheng stopped in front of the wooden door of a single-story brick house. “We’re here, Hua Hua. We’ll be staying in this little courtyard.”

She reached out and easily pushed the wooden door open; it wasn’t locked from either the inside or the outside.
A small courtyard separated them from the living quarters inside.

Ye Susheng stepped over the threshold and turned back to look at Hua Suihe, who was still outside. A sweet smile played on her lips. “Hua Hua, come in~”

Hua Suihe stopped outside the threshold. Behind Ye Susheng stood a withered tree, its branches covered in crows. They remained silent, blending into the pitch-black night and serving as a backdrop for Ye Susheng.

Ye Susheng wore a red wedding robe. Her loose white hair looked like a Western bridal veil, or perhaps more like the white mourning cloth used in Chinese funerals.

“Hua Hua, what are you thinking about? Why aren’t you coming in?”

Hua Suihe rested a hand against the doorframe, making no move to enter. She knew Ye Susheng too well; she could easily detect the deliberate note of enchantment in her voice.

Hua Suihe remained where she was, unmoved. She countered with a question, “The game has started, hasn’t it?”

“Didn’t Hua Hua say she wanted to live with me? Are you backing out now?”

[What’s going on? Are they fighting?]

[Why does Ye Susheng feel so weird? Weren’t they just being all lovey-dovey? Is this some kind of lovers’ spat?]

[Donating 48,888 for ‘Auspicious Possession.’ It’s dark out, don’t do this to me. I’m a coward; I can’t handle this stuff.]

The lights in the house behind Ye Susheng suddenly flickered on. The bright glow startled the crows in the courtyard, and they all took flight at once.

Hua Suihe looked past her. The inner door was open, revealing a spacious and tidy room that appeared empty.

This dungeon was titled “Rural Wedding.” Hua Suihe was highly wary of such scripts; she always felt they were like horror movies, even though Ye Susheng had repeatedly promised her it wouldn’t be scary at all.

Ye Susheng closed her eyes for a moment, and the glow in her red pupils returned to normal. She turned and walked into the courtyard. “Hua Hua, I’m going to make you some dinner.”

Hua Suihe stared at her back in silence for three seconds before finally stepping over the threshold. There were no streetlights in the darkness outside; the lit house offered a modicum of safety.

[The Luxury Package has been redeemed. A luxury courtyard has been created for the player. Added several daily necessities, appliances, furniture, and a Crystal Ice Coffin.]

Hua Suihe paused, doubting her own ears. “Added a what??”

[Repeating: The Luxury Package has been redeemed. Added a Crystal Ice Coffin.]

The System knew what she was focused on and repeated the key point directly.

[‘Auspicious Possession’ has been redeemed. Inauspicious entities have been exorcised for the player.]

Hua Suihe’s scalp tingled. Her mind was filled with nothing but “Ice Coffin” and “inauspicious.”

The kitchen was on the left side of the courtyard. Ye Susheng had already busied herself inside.

“Hua Hua, is porridge okay? There are no groceries at home; I’ll go buy some tomorrow.”

Hua Suihe rubbed her arms. Not daring to enter the room alone, she followed her toward the kitchen. “Sure,” she replied.

Hua Suihe stayed in the kitchen until she had finished a bowl of warm porridge.

She took her time tidying up the dishes, refusing to let Ye Susheng help, and washed the pots and bowls herself.

Ye Susheng saw right through her hesitation and giggled behind her hand. “Is Hua Hua afraid to go back to the room alone?”

Hua Suihe shot her a glare and shook the water off her hands. “You know exactly what kind of props your troupe stuffed into that room,” she grumbled.

“It’s okay, Hua Hua. If you don’t like it, I’ll just move it out.”

Hua Suihe perked up instantly. “Yes, please! Let’s move it together. It’s so unlucky to have that sitting in the room.”

Hua Suihe and Ye Susheng walked into the bedroom together. The first things that met their eyes were an Ice Coffin and a festive red wedding bed.
