Chapter 3

I was still terrified of Wei Chong.

Frozen in his arms, I didn’t dare move.

It wasn’t until I saw that Wei Chong had set me down on the couch and was half-kneeling before me, removing my shoes and socks, that I finally came back to my senses.

In a panic, I pulled my feet back.

“Y-you’re not allowed to take them off!”

Wei Chong’s expression didn’t change. His large hands caught my feet again, this time with a bit of force. “Miss, don’t move around.”

I immediately stopped moving.

With reddened eyes, I watched as Wei Chong wiped my feet clean and tucked them under the quilt.

Before Eldest Sister left, she had reminded me several times that I had to show the bearing of someone from the Jiang Family.

I couldn’t just let people bully me without fighting back.

Clutching the corner of the quilt, I looked at Wei Chong, who was half-kneeling beside me.

I forced myself to stay calm and mustered up my courage.

Then I stretched one foot out from beneath the quilt and stepped on Wei Chong.

My fair, tender foot against the dark fabric of his clothes.

Wei Chong’s gaze landed on me, heavy enough to feel almost tangible.

I didn’t dare look at him anymore and buried my head under the quilt.

My foot seemed to kick something. It was coarse and hard.

I froze, and tears welled up in the corners of my eyes again.

Wei Chong-he actually carried a stick with him!

Afraid he would hit me, I hurriedly pulled my foot back. “Kneel farther away.”

Wei Chong obediently moved back a little.

But what I didn’t know was that those wolf-like eyes remained fixed on me the entire time.

Wei Chong seemed to be enduring something, the corners of his eyes tinged red.

In my sleep, I vaguely heard a few low, ragged breaths coming from beside me.

Instinctively, I curled farther into the corner.

The servants in the manor said Wei Chong had found a position in the capital.

No wonder I hadn’t seen him in the courtyard when I woke up today.

He was simply too eye-catching. On normal days, even if he did nothing at all, just standing there was enough to draw everyone’s attention in the courtyard.

After the maid set out the food, I sat at the table and picked up a milk bun to nibble on.

After hesitating for a long while, I still asked,

“Wei Chong… what is he doing outside?”

The maid seemed unwilling to say and told me to go see for myself.

Before Eldest Sister left, she had instructed them several times to make me go out more and not always stay cooped up at home.

Now that they had finally found an excuse, of course they wanted me to go out for a stroll.

I stared at her for a while. Seeing that she really had no intention of telling me, I could only sigh and prepare to go see for myself.

I was a little curious about what Wei Chong would do.

After all, back when I begged Eldest Sister to spare Wei Chong’s life, Eldest Sister said there was nowhere Wei Chong could go except by my side.

When I saw him again, Wei Chong was standing in front of a carriage wearing golden soft armor.

My older brother had a set just like that. Before he went to the frontier, he had been a Commander in the palace.

But the fact that Wei Chong had obtained such a position overnight still shocked me.

Before I could call Wei Chong’s name, I saw the curtain of the carriage in front of him lift slightly.

Sitting inside was a woman dressed in white.

A famous elegant beauty in the capital.

I had seen her at several banquets.

Facing her, the corners of Wei Chong’s mouth were raised.

He didn’t look fierce at all, not like when he was by my side.

All at once, I felt rooted to the spot, without the courage to step forward.

I watched for a long time, but Wei Chong never once turned his face in my direction.

“Let’s… go back.”

When I turned around, I ran straight into someone.

People were coming and going on the street. His eyes were as sharp as Wei Chong’s. After sweeping me up and down with his gaze, he suddenly struck the back of my neck and knocked me unconscious.

The maid had just heard me say I wanted to leave and had gone to the side to call the carriage driver.

By the time she turned back, I had vanished.

Everyone knew the youngest miss of the Jiang Family was a useless coward. If she were kidnapped, who knew how badly she would cry?

The maid immediately panicked and begged Wei Chong to help find me.

Whether Wei Chong helped search for me or not, I didn’t know.

When I woke up, I was in a cold cellar.

The person who had abducted me was right in front of me, watching me.

My feeling hadn’t been wrong. He resembled Wei Chong very much.

My hands were bound behind my back. He had used a lot of force, and they still ached faintly even now.

Tears were already spilling out of my eyes beyond my control, but I didn’t dare make a sound. All I could do was sob quietly.

From across from me came a cold laugh.

“So Wei Chong moved up his revenge plan because of a useless thing like you.”

I didn’t understand what he meant, but I knew “useless thing” was definitely an insult aimed at me.

Crying, I whispered back, “Wei Chong likes someone else.”

The book had never actually said whether the villain Wei Chong had someone he liked.

But someone as fierce as him was still so gentle when facing Li Sisi. That had to mean he liked Li Sisi.

I didn’t understand why my chest hurt so much. I guessed it had to be because the kidnapper had been too rough and had hit me so hard that all I wanted to do was cry.

“Please let me go…”

“I’m just a useless little thing. I can’t help you with anything.”

I was truly afraid he would beat me to death. In a place like this, no one would hear me no matter how I screamed for help.

There was only one very faint candle in the cellar.

By its weak light, I saw that the kidnapper’s face resembled Wei Chong’s by ninety percent.

The same sharp eyes, the same handsome features.

Even their builds were similar.

For a moment, I forgot to cry and just stared blankly at his face.

Only when a sharp pain shot through my chin did I blink, and tears fell again.

“You think I look like Wei Chong?”

He let out a cold laugh. “I heard Wei Chong can do whatever he wants to you.”

“Then if I’m wearing this face, does that mean I can do whatever I want to you too?”

I didn’t speak. I only kept crying.

All of a sudden, I remembered that the book had mentioned the villain Wei Chong had a very formidable opponent.

That man was the son of Wei Chong’s uncle.

He was the same age as Wei Chong.

Because Wei Chong’s father and his uncle had been twins, even their two sons looked alike.

It was just that when Wei Chong’s father had been granted a princedom, his wealth and honor had not extended to the rest of the family.

Yet when he died, the entire clan was confiscated and executed down to the ninth degree.

When Wei Chong lost both his parents, Wei Xu also lost his family.

Wei Xu gripped my chin and kissed me.

My eyes brimmed with tears as I shook my head desperately.

In the end, the damp kiss only landed at the corner of my lips.

Wei Xu smiled and patted my head.

“I just wanted to see what kind of person Wei Chong actually likes.”

“I wasn’t really going to touch you.”

When he smiled, he looked much gentler than Wei Chong.

“Sleep. When you wake up, I’ll send you back.”

Wei Xu had been hiding and fleeing outside all this time, so he was much better at concealing himself than Wei Chong.

So until I gradually lost control and drifted off to sleep, Wei Chong still had not come.

Maybe he had never planned to come in the first place.

After all, when Wei Chong first came to my home, he had suffered such terrible humiliation.

But while I was half-asleep and half-awake, I seemed to fall into a familiar embrace.

When I woke up again, I was already at Jiang Mansion.

The red marks on my wrists had been treated with ointment, then carefully wrapped in silk cloth.

But they still hurt terribly, and I drew in a soft breath.

At that moment, Wei Chong pushed the door open and came in.

“Jiang Jiang is awake?”

My eyes instantly reddened. I wanted to say that all of this had happened because of Wei Chong.

But then I realized I couldn’t really blame him. I was the one who had run out on my own.

I took a deep breath and forced my tears back.

“What about Wei Xu? Did you… did you hit him?”

“Jiang Jiang.”

Wei Chong chuckled softly and lifted my chin.

“I saved you, and now you’re asking about someone else?”

I didn’t dare speak anymore. I thought that later, I would go ask around about Wei Xu.

Although he had kidnapped me, Wei Xu probably hadn’t wanted to do anything to me.

Otherwise, he would have killed me right at the start.

Besides, he was Wei Chong’s only family now.

Wei Chong didn’t know what I was thinking. In the end, he only lowered his eyes.

“He’s fine.”

“But I sent him to the frontier.”

“After all, who told him to touch my Jiang Jiang?”
