Chapter 1

One second, I was listening to sad music and imagining myself strolling through the streets of Tokyo. The next, I had transmigrated into the world of a horror game.

A strange electronic voice rang in my ears.

[Welcome, player Jiang Wu, to the S-rank instance, “Urban Legends.”

[Clear all urban legend stages within the instance to complete the game. Time limit: five days.

[Current number of players: 50.

[We wish you an enjoyable game.]

On a cold, damp street, a gray building stood before us.

A sinister chill wind swept past, and everyone instinctively hugged their trembling bodies.

Everyone except me. My face was expressionless, my gaze melancholy.

Because that was my character setting.

In reality, I was already screaming like a deranged groundhog on the inside.

“Aaaaaah, Mom! Where the hell is this?! I’m so scared, waaah!”

A timid girl beside me had already cried out my thoughts for me.

“Waaah, where am I? I was just walking home from school, and then I suddenly appeared here.”

A thug kicked the streetlamp next to him. “Fuck, what the hell is this place?!”

Then he suddenly froze and stared blankly at me.

Under the dim yellow streetlight, I stood there quietly.

My face was calm and filled with melancholy, a stark contrast to the panic around me.

I didn’t notice his odd look. My mind was full of only one thought: a streetlamp was the ultimate atmosphere prop for crafting a melancholic persona!

So I immediately moved under the streetlamp.

Even in a bizarre world, I had to maintain my melancholy at all times.

Just as I was still keeping up my character setting, a piercing scream suddenly came from the crowd.

“Aaaaaah! Help! There’s a monster!”

I looked up and saw that, in the boundless darkness, something strange seemed to be writhing, swallowing players whole.

Then came the horrifying sound of chewing.

Everyone scattered in terror. I took two steps back, but still forced myself to endure.

Then I leaned directly against the streetlamp, tilted my head up at a forty-five-degree angle, and revealed my standard sharp jawline.

There was no way I could outrun the monster anyway. In that case, even if I died, I had to keep up my melancholic persona until the very end.

Even in death, I would die with dignity!

But strangely enough, the monster hidden in the darkness didn’t attack me.

While I was still feeling puzzled, a woman’s voice rang out.

“Get somewhere with light! These monsters are afraid of light!”

At that, several quick-reacting players immediately rushed under the streetlamp.

Someone bumped into me, making me stagger. I nearly failed to maintain my character setting.

Sure enough, after they reached the light, the monster disappeared.

A man and a woman walked over with flashlights. They introduced themselves as veteran players here, nicknamed Yao Yao and Brother Hu.

After brief introductions, the two began explaining where we were to the players.

This was the world of a horror game. Only by clearing the game could we return to the real world.

This was an Urban Legends instance. To survive, we had to pass all of the urban legend stages inside.

And the monster we had just encountered was the first urban legend, called Mr. Shadow. We had to get somewhere with light to avoid being attacked by it.

Hearing this, everyone looked at me strangely.

Yao Yao’s gaze was deep as she looked at me. “As a newcomer, not only were you able to stay this calm, you even found the method to clear the stage in such a short time. Impressive!”

“Uh…”

I felt a little awkward.

I couldn’t exactly tell them I actually had no idea what was going on, and that I had only happened to stand somewhere with light because I was trying to look melancholic, right?

But saying that out loud would ruin my character setting.

So I merely nodded faintly.

And continued maintaining my melancholic persona.
