Chapter 1

I hadn’t even had time to stuff that baby back before Ji Ruyin died.

More than anything, she had cared about keeping up appearances while she was alive, always dressed in white, all ethereal grace and immortal elegance.

I still remember the first time we met. I only got some blood on her skirt while killing someone, and she hunted me for three days and three nights over it.

So how did she end up this miserable in death?

Her white dress, usually spotless, was smeared with blood and grime, so filthy its original color was impossible to make out.

Her right sleeve hung empty, her arm severed clean off at the shoulder.

Even that lotus-like face of hers, always cold as frost, had been slashed once-from the end of her brow all the way to her chin. Flesh split open, making her look terrifying.

I crouched down, turned Ji Ruyin’s body over properly, and reached out to poke her left cheek lightly with a finger.

Somewhat disappointed in her, I said, “Where’s all that skill you had when you were chasing me down?”

“How did you let people bully you into this state?”

I checked her completely shattered heart meridians next and said with more than a little schadenfreude, “Well, well. They actually bullied you to death.”

If this were the old Ji Ruyin, she probably would have pulled her sword on me with that cold face of hers already.

I glanced to the side. Even her treasured Po Wang Sword had snapped in two.

If I’d known it would end up like this, it would’ve been better for me to get it back then.

Still, a broken sword was still a sword, and the Eastern pearl set into the hilt had to be worth a fair amount.

I wiped the sword clean and tucked it into my belt.

Then I took another look at Ji Ruyin’s corpse.

“Wouldn’t it be a little wrong to just leave you out here in the wild?”

“Especially after I took your sword.”

“Fine. This Saintess is in a good mood today, so I’ll be merciful and pick out a better gravesite for you.”

“But that’s all. Don’t go expecting me to avenge you.”

With that, I tied Ji Ruyin’s corpse onto my back.

Just as I was about to leave, I suddenly heard soft sobbing behind me.

Only then did I remember there seemed to be a living person here too.

Chapter 2

What was the last thing Ji Ruyin said to me before she died?

Something about telling me to take care of this little thing?

The little girl in front of me looked only three or four years old, and she still didn’t seem to have recovered from what had just happened.

She sat there blankly, quietly sniffling.

I crouched down to look at her and tapped her on the head.

“Kid, what are you to Ji Ruyin?”

“Don’t tell me you’re her illegitimate child?”

“Why aren’t you talking? Are you mute?”

The little girl lifted her head but still said nothing, only staring at me with a pair of pitch-black eyes.

This kid looked kind of familiar.

I just couldn’t remember where I’d seen that face before.

Anyway, it was the kind of face that annoyed me on sight.

Since she wouldn’t talk, I couldn’t be bothered to keep asking. I stood up and left.

After two steps, I turned back with a fierce look.

“Hey, kid. Keep up.”

“If you get lost, I won’t care.”

The little girl blinked, and it took her quite a while to react.

Then she hurriedly climbed up from the ground.

Her two little legs pumped furiously as she tottered along behind me.

Ji Ruyin’s head, usually held high, now drooped limply over my back. A drop of blood landed behind my ear.

The blood had already gone cold, and the touch of it sent a shiver through me.

With obvious disgust, I complained, “Ji Ruyin, you’re filthy as hell.”
