My Beast Slave Is Far Too Flirtatious - Chapter 5
I knew Yun Lin was ambitious.
The wolf clan was warlike, after all. Few among them did not dream of becoming Wolf King.
Besides, the current Wolf King had murdered his father. Yun Lin would never resign himself to remaining with the Liu family as a husband who had married into his wife’s household.
But he was no fool blinded by beauty.
He was calculating, cold-blooded, and heartless.
Offer me Yuncheng as a betrothal gift? More likely, he intended to use me for some purpose of his own.
Thinking it through, Yun Lin must have learned of the Wolf King’s grave illness only within the past two days.
Ordinarily, the current Wolf King was strong and healthy. Living another few decades should have posed no problem.
My parents, meanwhile, were due to step down in five years. With my weak spiritual power and gentle temperament, the position of Qingcheng’s City Lord would naturally never fall to me.
Taking me as his mate would only have limited Yun Lin’s prospects.
That was why he had threatened to mutilate himself rather than couple with me.
Then news suddenly arrived that the Wolf King was gravely ill.
My mother, as City Lord of Qingcheng, commanded forty thousand soldiers.
If Yun Lin could secure Qingcheng’s aid, it would undoubtedly strengthen his bid for the throne.
Was that why he had deliberately humbled himself and come here to curry favor?
A scornful laugh escaped me. Yun Lin truly was ridiculous.
If Qingcheng intervened in Yuncheng’s struggle, at best the people would denounce us. At worst, we would provoke public outrage and face a siege by the other cities.
Risk Qingcheng’s safety on the chance that this discarded heir might fight his way through and claim the title of Wolf King?
Did Yun Lin think the snake clan grew tails but no brains?
Besides, he had abandoned me only days ago. Now he shamelessly begged to reconcile. Did he truly think that because I was meek and softhearted, a few perfunctory words would win me back?
I was still a daughter of the snake clan. I had a temper of my own.
Had he merely softened his attitude, I might have reconciled with him for the sake of relations between our cities.
But this submission, steeped in calculation, only disgusted me.
I was about to lose my temper when he pulled his lips into a pale, feeble smile.
“I know you don’t wish to forgive me, but I had no other choice then. I had to find a powerful Mistress before I could avenge my father.” Pain crossed Yun Lin’s face. “I could hardly cast aside a blood feud for my own selfish desires. Yuan’er, surely you understand my difficulties?”
“You have your difficulties, and I have my choices. From the day you abandoned me, there has been nothing between us. Don’t even think of using my name to drag Qingcheng into the wolf clan’s conflict.”
Unwilling to tangle with him any longer, I turned to leave.
Yun Lin caught my wrist. His warm palm closed tightly around it.
At the same time, an overbearing gaze bored into my back, making my scalp crawl. I felt as though I might kick up my legs and die on the spot.
I tried to pull away and put some distance between Yun Lin and me.
But he saw through me and bent close to murmur in my ear.
“Yuan’er, are you truly willing to—”
“Mistress, this slave is so frightened all alone in the room.”
Before Yun Lin could finish, the man’s voice sounded above my head.
I looked up to find him with tears brimming in his eyes, every inch a frail and delicate beauty.
He pulled my hand from Yun Lin’s grip, pressed his cheek into my palm, and mumbled, “This slave is so afraid Mistress will cast me aside and leave me to an empty bed for the rest of my life.”
I was beginning to suspect that he might be a fox.
The kind who would itch all over if he went a single day without shamelessly flirting.
Yet waves of pressure rolled from him, putting Yun Lin on guard. He instinctively retreated several steps away from us.
Seizing the opportunity, I wrapped an arm around the man’s waist and teased, “You’re vigorous, tireless, and full of tricks. How could I bear to leave you with an empty bed?”
“Oh, you’re awful!” He lightly thumped my chest. “Saying something so private in front of an outsider—this slave will be embarrassed. And I don’t have that many tricks.”
At those words, Yun Lin’s expression cracked completely.
His fists clenched and his body trembled faintly, as though he were desperately suppressing his fury.
The man, however, had no intention of letting him off so easily.
“Mistress, is this esteemed gentleman my predecessor?” He feigned deep emotion. “If he hadn’t graciously stepped aside, how could this slave ever have had the chance to serve Mistress? I would probably still be starving and freezing in the Ghost Market. Esteemed predecessor, I am truly so grateful. You really are the kindest man under heaven.”
Every word of praise carried a barb. Yun Lin’s face darkened, and all his disgust congealed into a stiff smile.
“So this is the kind of man Yuan’er likes.” He coughed weakly. “In that case, I should not intrude. I only hope you will not abandon all ambition for a moment’s pleasure. You and I are the match ordained by heaven.”
That so-called perfect match meant nothing more than using each other.
Unfortunately for him, I had no desire to join hands with Yun Lin.
“I harbor no grand ambitions. I only want to spend my life with a beautiful man.” I smiled faintly. “Young Master Yun, see yourself out.”
