“Qin Ge, why aren’t you saying anything?” Cheng Jin, seeing no reaction from me, reached out and pinched my cheek. “Are you scared silly?”

I came back to my senses and looked at her face.

Cheng Jin was looking at me with a smile, tears in her eyes.

That smile was still innocent, just like before…

My eyes couldn’t help but sting, and I reached out and hugged her.

“No, I’m just… so happy.”

She leaned in and whispered, “Actually, I also really hate Teacher Chen.”

I was dark inside, but I didn’t dare to openly say that I hated her.

I could only remain silent.

Cheng Jin took my silence as consent.

She clapped her hands. “Great! We’re friends from now on!”

I found her too delicate, crying her eyes out over minor bumps and scrapes.

I found her too fussy, discarding anything that had the slightest flaw.

I also found her annoying for lacking discretion, chattering noisily in my ear every day.

I knew my place; I knew that a rich girl like Cheng Jin wouldn’t really consider me a true friend…

Until the second semester of eighth grade, when I got into a car accident.

I was already an orphan, living with my aunt and uncle. When they found out I might never walk again, my aunt and uncle hesitated for a few days, then decided to give up on me and send me to a welfare home in the countryside.

By then, I had already lost hope in life.

But I never expected that the light that shone back into my life would be Cheng Jin.

She came to visit me.

She chattered away by my ear.

As she left, she said she would come to see me every day.

She kept her word.

For the next three months, she didn’t miss a single day.

She argued with my aunt and uncle.
