My Husband Can Make It Rain - Chapter 2
Chapter 2
It wasn’t until the year I turned seventeen that I received a love letter.
It was an ordinary Friday, nothing special about it. On my way home from school, our class monitor, Ye Wenxiu, called out to me.
Ye Wenxiu was something of a celebrity in our grade. He was handsome and had excellent grades.
Back in our student days, that basically made him the untouchable dream boy for plenty of girls.
Of course, yours truly didn’t do too badly either. I could just barely compete with Ye Wenxiu for the throne of top student in our grade.
He stood in the sunlight, his soft bangs resting naturally against his forehead, his voice clear and gentle. “Student Wen Si’an.”
I stopped. “What is it?”
Ye Wenxiu walked over. His gentle gaze fell on me, and his expression looked faintly unnatural.
After a long pause, he merely reached out and lightly patted my shoulder.
“Good luck on the college entrance exam.”
I was a little confused, but I still smiled politely and nodded.
“Thanks.”
Inwardly, though, I thought: Kid, I really thought you were here to issue me a challenge.
Before the smile had even left my lips, the sky, which had clearly been bright blue a moment ago, suddenly turned gray and gloomy.
A bolt of lightning tore across the sky. Thunder rumbled, and the rain came crashing down like it had been poured from a basin.
Without the slightest warning.
Ye Wenxiu was soaked through in an instant. He wiped his face.
“Strange. The weather changed so fast.”
As he spoke, he pulled a black umbrella out of his schoolbag.
“Student Wen, I have an umbrella. I’ll walk you home.”
But the moment he opened it, the canopy was shredded by the wind, leaving only a bare pole.
The sight was honestly hilarious. I couldn’t help laughing out loud.
The thunder boomed, even louder than before.
Out of habit, I reached for my jade pendant, only to remember that after taking it off for my shower today and putting it in the little wooden box, I’d forgotten to put it back on.
Looking at the weather that had changed so abruptly, I instinctively felt something was wrong. I hurriedly said goodbye to Ye Wenxiu and ran home through the rain.
When I got home drenched from head to toe, I saw my mom sitting on the sofa with a grave expression, as if she had been waiting for me for a long time.
I sidled over with a beaming smile.
“Wen Si’an, answer me. Have you been getting close to any boys lately?”
I shook my head.
My mom had said I wasn’t allowed to date early.
She sized me up for a while, then tossed me a bath towel and asked out of nowhere, “Where’s your jade pendant?”
“…”
“I took it off when I showered and forgot to grab it…” I lowered my head and said quietly.
She had told me many times that I had to keep the jade pendant on me at all times. The solemn, serious way she said it made it seem like that jade pendant was my lifeline.
I had genuinely wanted to indulge my dramatic side and put on a whole performance of, “Smash this blasted thing!”
But I didn’t dare. My mom would smash me instead.
Still, carrying a jade pendant while showering was seriously inconvenient.
Once, I forgot to take it off before going into the bathroom, so I simply held it in my hand. But the longer I showered, the hotter the jade pendant became. After that, I always left it outside the bathroom.
At some point, my mom had picked up my schoolbag and started casually rummaging through it.
Holding up an envelope, she asked me, “What’s this?”
I shook my head to indicate I had no idea.
She looked at me for two seconds. I nodded, signaling that she could open it.
After reading it, my mom’s face turned grave. She shook her head and sighed.
“No wonder he suddenly wants to move things up.” My mom slapped the envelope onto the table. “I’m afraid he’s angry.”
Me: ?
I stepped forward, took the envelope, and skimmed the contents. I was a little surprised.
The letter said-
“Student Wen Si’an, I think I have to admit that you are the only person in this school who can stir my emotions.
“Every time I pass by your class and see the serious, determined look on your face as you work through problems at your seat by the window, it lingers in my mind. I think… I like you.
“I’m saying this only to express my feelings. I hope we can improve together and both get into the schools we want!”
It was signed Ye Wenxiu.
After reading it, I nearly blurted out a national curse.
“Crafty. Too crafty!”
My mom looked at me in horror.
I couldn’t help ranting, “Writing this to me in senior year? What exactly is he plotting?
“Freaking hell, does he think this will mess with my head and affect my next monthly exam?
“No way. I’m doing another mock paper later!”
I was still immersed in cursing Ye Wenxiu for being sinister and cunning, completely forgetting to ask who the ‘he’ my mom mentioned was.
My mom froze. After a long while, she slowly said, “Daughter, I’m suddenly starting to think that person’s worries are a little unnecessary.”
Me: ?
She waved a hand at me.
“In any case, I’m asking for a few days off for you. You won’t go to school for now.”
“Huh?”
There was such a good thing?
My mom rolled her eyes at me. “Don’t get smug. It’s not good news!”
She explained my childhood experiences to me in detail, including the matter of the jade pendant.
The final conclusion was that I had to be married this year. That was his demand.
Who this ‘he’ was, I had no idea. I’d never even met him.
But what the hell did she mean, married?
Did the college entrance exam require a marriage certificate now?
