Yan Yi felt how cold my palm was and assumed he had frightened me—that I was afraid he would marry someone else and cast me aside.

His brow furrowed, and his expression turned even colder. Into the phone, he said, “I’ll get a vasectomy tomorrow. That should guarantee the end of the family line.”

His father sputtered, “You—you—you—” for a long time.

Yan Yi, meanwhile, still had the patience to comfort me.

“Don’t be scared. I keep my word. I hate children more than anything. Letting the bloodline end with me would be perfect.”

A gentle kiss landed on my forehead.

His tone was resolute. Apparently, he had truly made up his mind to die childless.

I forced a smile in return, though my palms were already slick with cold sweat.

Yan Yi didn’t want children. If he ever learned about Yueyue, what if he really did strangle him?

The warmth of Yan Yi’s chest pressed against me as he kissed my cheek again. “You’re not coming back tomorrow either, are you?”

Yan Yi and I might have had what I believed was a sugar arrangement, but there were always two or three nights a week when I didn’t stay at his house.

Those were the nights I went home to my child.

I had told Yan Yi I was visiting my parents.

“Mm.” Uneasy, I added, “My mother isn’t in good health. I need to go back and help with the laundry and cleaning.”

“I can hire a housekeeper for her.”

I refused as firmly as I could. “There’s really no need. My mother isn’t used to having strangers around.”

If Yan Yi actually sent a housekeeper, wouldn’t the child at home be exposed?

He was silent for a long moment. Though clearly displeased, he let it go.

But only after demanding something sweet in return.

“Then let’s do it one more time.”

“…”

I was an intersex man.

Four years ago, a friend had betrayed me. While fleeing, I had hidden in a room whose door happened to be ajar. Inside, I found Yan Yi, who had been drugged just as I had.

I no longer remembered how we started kissing.

In that dim room, his hand had paused when it reached a certain place.

He went still for a long moment. “What’s this?”

Yan Yi looked down at me, a silent question in his eyes.

My face burned. I bit down on his hand and stammered, “Either way… works.”

His gaze darkened as understanding seemed to dawn.

We were tinder thrown into a flame. It was two or three in the morning before the fire finally burned itself out.

When I woke the next day, an arm was still draped across my waist.

The man beside me had his eyes closed. His lashes were long, his brow high, his profile almost unfairly handsome—a face made for both romance and heartbreak.

Remembering his low, breathless sounds against my ear the night before made my cheeks burn all over again.

There was no time for regret. I pulled on my clothes and slipped away.

I thought that would be the end of it.

Two weeks later, however, I went to the hospital because I had been feeling unwell.

That was when I learned I was pregnant.

My body had always been different. I had planned to live out my life alone, but that tiny, unexpected life threw every plan into disarray.

He was my precious baby.

The doctor said I would need plenty of rest if I wanted to keep him. So I quit my job and returned to my hometown.

I didn’t come back until Yueyue was nearly old enough for kindergarten. To ease myself back into working, I found a temporary job as an attendant at a private club.

One day, a group of guests deliberately made trouble for me. Yan Yi was the one who stepped in.

“Why are you staring into space?”

He stood tall and straight, his features stern, his presence naturally oppressive.

Three years had passed, yet I recognized him at once.

He, however, did not seem to recognize me.

Suppressing the turmoil in my heart, I thanked him awkwardly. “Thank you, sir.”

Yan Yi studied my face. Perhaps he noticed the way expectation had flickered in my eyes before sinking into disappointment.

“Have we met before?” he asked.

I froze, then lowered my head. “No.”

He gazed down at me without another word, as if silently accepting my answer.
