Meng Zhiyi was still waiting for the task progress, completely unaware that her words had just poured a bucket of cold water over the heads of the Meng Family.

Everyone calmed down.

“I’m sorry.”

Suddenly, an apology rang out in the deathly silent living room.

Except for Shen Que, the others looked in disbelief at the person who spoke.

Lowering one’s head is always difficult. Even Meng Mother, who had been strong her whole life, used up all her courage to utter those three words.

But she still lowered her head.

Meng Mother stood where she was, the anger on her body long gone, replaced by guilt.

Clearly, Meng Zhiyi’s words just now had worked.

Meng Zhiyi hadn’t expected Meng Mother to apologize.

She stood there in a daze, her mind exploding.

[Let it all end!]

[I’m done with this!]

[Damn!]

Meng Zhiyi pressed her lips together, then turned and went upstairs without saying a word.

If she didn’t leave now, she really couldn’t guarantee she wouldn’t lose control.

Her footsteps on the stairs were so heavy it seemed she might break through the floor, only fading after Meng Zhiyi returned to her room.

In the living room, the atmosphere remained awkward.

Shen Que silently memorized everything Meng Zhiyi had just said, and after a moment, found an excuse to prepare to leave.

“Wait.” Meng Mother called out to Shen Que.

Shen Que nodded gently to her. “Auntie.”

Meng Mother walked around the coffee table in the living room, hesitated for a few seconds, then asked, “You didn’t like Zhiyi before, and even wanted to break off the engagement. Why have you suddenly changed your mind now?”

When it came to Meng Zhiyi, perhaps Meng Mother had failed to be a qualified mother in many ways.

But that didn’t mean she truly ignored her child’s existence.

Even after Meng Zhiyi had done so many things to disappoint them, neither Meng Mother nor the entire Meng Family had ever considered kicking her out of the house.

Instead, they continued to provide for her.

Now, Shen Que’s change in attitude toward Meng Zhiyi surprised her as a mother, and also made her anxious.

She was afraid Shen Que would use this approach to resist the pressure from the Shen Matriarch, and in doing so, hurt her already wounded daughter.

Shen Que wasn’t foolish; he quickly realized why Meng Mother was asking.

He pressed his lips together and, without revealing that he could hear inner thoughts, said, “I want to try getting along with her.”

Meng Mother fell silent.

She knew very well that in families like the Shen Family and Meng Family, pure love was almost a fantasy.

But for the first time, she desperately hoped her daughter could get what she wanted, rather than become a sacrifice for interests.

“Xiao Que, Auntie knows you’re a good kid, and understands that the engagement with Zhiyi has brought you a lot of undeserved grievances.”

“But Auntie still hopes you won’t hurt her.”

As her words ended, Meng Zhizhou spoke up: “My little sister is foolish and stubborn as an ox. Just like she said, she works extra hard for what she wants, but usually goes about it the wrong way.”

“She likes you. That’s something we can’t control. But if you really can’t take it anymore, please tell us first. Don’t take it out on her.”

Meng Father opened his mouth to say something, but in the end, it only became a long sigh.

Meng Yanchuan and Meng Yiyang said nothing the whole time, clearly still in shock from Meng Zhiyi’s earlier words.

Shen Que pressed his lips together, thought seriously, then nodded. “Alright.”

Meanwhile, upstairs in her room.

Meng Zhiyi returned to her bedroom and immediately grabbed her pillow and started pounding it furiously.

“Damn, damn, damn!”

“Xiao Ba, get out here and explain why they’re all breaking character!”

“Each one of them is more unpredictable than my period!”

“How am I supposed to progress the task like this?”

The System trembled, not daring to make a sound.

After howling for a while and getting no response from the System, Meng Zhiyi’s expression suddenly darkened, her eyes flashing with a cold light. Then she strode to the window and flung it open.
“Not saying anything, huh? Fine, then no one is doing this task. I don’t give a damn about those thirty billion, I’ll just delete the file and start over.”

With that, Meng Zhiyi stepped onto the stool and climbed onto the windowsill.

“!!!”

“Don’t be impulsive!”

Two startled cries rang out at the same time.

One was from the System, Xiao Ba, in her mind; the other was from the servant who had come upstairs to call her for dinner.

“Don’t come any closer!” Meng Zhiyi gripped the window, her voice low.

She had no interest in dealing with the servant right now. What she wanted was to figure out why the Meng Family and Shen Que were so different from what she knew of their characters in the original book!

The servant was so frightened she clung to the wall, not daring to take a single step forward.

“Answer my question.” Meng Zhiyi maintained her stance, ready to jump, clearly meaning that if the System didn’t explain, she’d leap right away.

The System was so anxious it started stammering: “Host, host, please don’t get agitated.”

“Are you going to talk or not?”

Meng Zhiyi shifted slightly. Ever since she arrived in this world, she’d had a suspicion that this was no accident.

Because the bound task was completely different in nature from any she’d encountered before.

But Meng Zhiyi had always been the type to go with the flow, and with the promise of a reward, she chose to turn a blind eye.

But now things were different. She had to get to the bottom of this.

The System spun in circles, not knowing how to answer.

Because it couldn’t possibly tell Meng Zhiyi that it had bound this task to her on its own initiative.

“Host, it’s not that I don’t want to say, I really don’t know how to explain it.” The System whimpered.

Meng Zhiyi remained unmoved, even colder.

“Then you never have to say it.” With that, Meng Zhiyi turned, ready to jump.

“Meng Zhiyi!”

At the critical moment, Shen Que’s voice rang out.

Behind him, the Meng Family followed, each one looking at her with anxious faces.

Meng Zhiyi: “…”

“Zhiyi, don’t do anything rash. Mom knows we treated you badly before, but we won’t anymore. Please come down, okay?” Meng Mother said anxiously.

Meng Father was also desperate: “Zhiyi, be good, come down first. From now on, whatever you want to do, Mom, Dad, and your brothers will support you.”

Meng Zhizhou and the other two brothers were relatively calm.

The three quickly glanced at Meng Zhiyi’s position, then Meng Zhizhou and the other two exchanged looks and quietly headed to the room next door.

Shen Que slowly walked in, his dark eyes fixed on Meng Zhiyi, his voice gentle: “Meng Zhiyi, whatever it is, come down and talk to me. Don’t do anything to hurt yourself.”

[Speechless, why did you all come up here?]

Meng Zhiyi had only wanted to scare the System and get some useful information out of it.

Now she found herself in an awkward situation, caught between a rock and a hard place.

[Uh… If I say I climbed up here to enjoy the view, would they believe me?]

[Please, just go away, don’t mind me!]

[Otherwise, this is really embarrassing.]

Next door, Meng Zhizhou, who was about to climb over, immediately stopped, speechless.

The others secretly breathed a sigh of relief, but to avoid blowing her cover, they could only continue to play along.

After several rounds of persuasion, Meng Zhiyi had no choice but to temporarily give up questioning the System and forced herself to cooperate with their act.

“You don’t love me, so let me disappear from this world.” As she spoke, she pretended to wipe away tears.

The others were so awkward their toes could almost dig out a whole villa.

“How could that be? Dad and Mom love you, and your brothers love you too.” The last sentence, Meng Father said against his conscience.

Meng Zhiyi put on a show of being extremely emotional: “I don’t believe it, I don’t believe it, unless you prove it to me.”

“Otherwise, I’ll jump down from here.”
