Shen Que did not answer Meng Zhiyi’s question. Instead, he reached out and took her hand, leading her into another empty room.

“Wait here. If anything happens, message me, alright?”

After settling Meng Zhiyi, Shen Que turned to leave.

“Wait, are you and my Third Brother hiding something from me?” Meng Zhiyi grabbed him, asking suspiciously.

Because in the original book Shen Que disliked the original host, he basically had no contact with the Meng Family.

But now, he and Meng Yanchuan had appeared together at the police station for no apparent reason. There must be a reason for this.

Shen Que had no intention of hiding it from her. He glanced at the grieving family members still crying outside and said, “The missing girl this time is an intern at Shen Corporation. She had only been working at the company for a week, and she disappeared not long after getting off work.”

Hearing this, Meng Zhiyi thoughtfully withdrew her hand.

[If you keep searching like this, by the time you find her, that girl will already have been harmed.]

Shen Que pressed his lips together. At this moment, he truly wanted to ask Meng Zhiyi directly what else she knew, regardless of whether it would expose him.

But he held back.

The girl before him no longer had the same soul as before. She carried many unpredictable secrets. If he rashly exposed her identity, it might backfire.

Thinking this, Shen Que’s thoughts broke off. He turned and sat down beside Meng Zhiyi again.

“You’re not going to find my Third Brother?” Meng Zhiyi looked at him in confusion.

Shen Que shook his head. “Later. Your Third Brother is probably communicating with the police right now.”

“What does this missing person case have to do with my Third Brother? Isn’t he a forensic doctor?”

Shen Que replied, “There have been a lot of dismemberment cases recently. Your Third Brother happens to be in charge, so it’s suspected that this missing person case is related to the dismemberment cases.”

“Oh.”

[Missing persons are missing persons, and dismemberment is dismemberment. These are two separate cases. But, if I remember correctly, it was precisely because the girl’s body was dumped after she was killed that the police mistakenly linked this case to the dismemberment cases, which allowed the real culprit to remain at large.]

A trace of emotion flashed in Shen Que’s eyes, but he quickly lowered his gaze to hide the turmoil in his heart.

Meng Zhiyi propped her chin with her hand, staring absentmindedly at the family members being led to the interrogation room by the police.

These family members were dressed very simply; the parents and other elders were all honest people.

And being able to intern at Shen Corporation meant that the girl was quite capable-at the very least, her family had put a lot of effort into raising her.

[Sigh… The rope always breaks at its thinnest point.]

She sighed inwardly.

Shen Que, meanwhile, focused intently beside her, trying to catch any useful clues from her inner thoughts.

[The parents are just ordinary wage earners, scrimping and saving to hire a tutor for their youngest daughter, only to bring in a pervert.]

[This man was even introduced by a fellow townsman. You really can’t be too careful with people.]

Meng Zhiyi was lost in her own thoughts, completely unaware that Shen Que was texting Meng Yanchuan right beside her.

At that moment, Meng Yanchuan, in the interrogation room, received Shen Que’s message.

He put away his phone, looked at the parents who were crying and telling the police how outstanding their daughter was, and pressed his lips together.

“Has anyone unfamiliar visited your home recently?” he asked.

The mother, still crying, shook her head at first, insisting that only their family had been at home.

At this moment, the younger daughter, a bit at a loss, tugged at her mother’s sleeve and whispered, “Mom, Teacher Wang came to our house.”

The mother’s sobbing stopped abruptly, and she quickly said, “Yes, yes, I recently hired a tutor for my younger daughter, introduced by someone from our hometown.”

“It couldn’t be him, right? That young man looks so gentle and is very polite.”

The mother seemed to have never suspected that someone like that could be the one who kidnapped her daughter.

“You can’t judge a book by its cover. Nothing is certain,” the police officer in charge of the questioning replied.

The police then asked for Teacher Wang’s information and contact details.

Hearing that the mother said he had still been coming to tutor the younger daughter on time these past few days, the police began to form an initial plan.

When Meng Yanchuan came out of the interrogation room, Meng Zhiyi had already fallen asleep on the table, covered with a small blanket Shen Que had brought from the car.
“Is she asleep?” Meng Yanchuan asked in a low voice.

Shen Que nodded. “Should we wake her up?”

“Let her sleep. The eldest miss’s temper when she wakes up is no joke.” After saying this, Meng Yanchuan looked at Shen Que. “You carry her out, I’ll go get the car.”

“?” Shen Que asked in surprise, “Me?”

Meng Yanchuan: “Who else? Aren’t you her boyfriend?”

“…But you’re her brother.”

Meng Yanchuan waved his hand. “I’m her brother, sure, but in terms of relationship, she’s closer to you. Of course, you don’t have to carry her. You can wake her up, but you’ll be the one getting scolded.”

With that, he didn’t give Shen Que a chance to refuse and turned to leave.

Shen Que stood where he was, looking at the still soundly sleeping Meng Zhiyi with a bit of a headache.

After a moment, he sighed, walked over to Meng Zhiyi, and called softly, “Meng Zhiyi.”

There was no response.

Shen Que leaned down closer and called again.

This time, Meng Zhiyi murmured in her sleep, her delicate brows furrowing in annoyance.

Shen Que didn’t call out again, but simply stared quietly at the girl before him.

All this time, he had never looked at Meng Zhiyi so closely. Compared to her troublesome self when awake, the sleeping Meng Zhiyi was much more well-behaved.

Her thick, long eyelashes were like little wings, casting shadows beneath her eyes. Her nose was delicate and straight, her lips rosy and full-every feature was remarkably perfect.

It wasn’t until a gentle breeze drifted in from the window and brushed his cheek that Shen Que finally snapped out of it, withdrawing his gaze and closing his eyes to calm his wildly beating heart.

After a moment, he gave up on waking Meng Zhiyi and instead carefully picked her up.

Meng Zhiyi stirred for a moment in her sleep, but her eyelids felt so heavy she couldn’t open them at all.

Carrying her to the car, Shen Que was about to ask Meng Yanchuan whether to take her back to the Meng Family or to school, when Meng Zhiyi suddenly leaned against his shoulder.

“Why is she so hot?” When Shen Que adjusted her, his hand brushed her cheek and found it alarmingly warm.

Meng Yanchuan turned his head and asked, “What’s hot?”

A hint of worry flashed in Shen Que’s eyes. “Meng Zhiyi has a fever. Her forehead is burning.”

“Then let’s go to the hospital.”

Without hesitation, Meng Yanchuan drove straight to the hospital.

However, after a thorough check-up, aside from the fever, nothing else could be found wrong with Meng Zhiyi.

Even the doctor was puzzled, suspecting she might have some rare disease.

“Let’s lower her temperature first. It’s not good for her to keep burning up like this.” Shen Que was relatively calm. At this moment, he suspected the problem wasn’t with Meng Zhiyi’s body, but with her soul.

Meng Yanchuan said, “I’ll go handle the admission and payment.”

Meanwhile, Meng Zhiyi found herself in a strange space.

All around her were dazzling, multicolored halos. Aside from herself, there was nothing else.

Suddenly, a familiar voice sounded in her ear.

It was the System.

Just as Meng Zhiyi was about to call out to it, she heard the System seemingly talking to someone.

The words were intermittent, repeating some disjointed phrases.

Finally… erasure… chance…

Meng Zhiyi felt confused. To figure out what was going on, she walked toward the direction of the voice.

She hadn’t gone far when a voice calling her name came from behind.

She stopped and looked back, only to be met by a wave of scorching heat that appeared out of nowhere.

“No! Meng Zhiyi, don’t go!”

Meng Zhiyi raised her hand to shield herself from the heat. Hearing that clear shout, her heart suddenly clenched.

“Who are you?”

Braving the burning heat, Meng Zhiyi tried to move forward, wanting to see clearly who was standing on the other side of the flames.

Her voice startled the System behind her. Realizing something, the System hurriedly forced her out of the space in a panic.

Meng Zhiyi couldn’t resist the force pulling her back. She could only stare fixedly at the figure behind the flames, shouting, “Who are you!”
