He shoved the black tentacle protruding from the passenger-side glove compartment back inside, looking a little panicked.

“…It’s a stress toy.”

“Work’s been kind of stressful lately, so I bought it to help me unwind.”

“I just don’t know where I put the plastic bag it came in. That’s why it’s loose.”

Something was wrong.

I looked away. After a long silence, I finally picked up the thread.

“Is that so? It looks pretty realistic. I can tell it’s very soft just by looking at it.”

The old Chen Jinsheng had always harbored an inexplicable fear of soft-bodied invertebrates.

Even seeing an octopus on television would turn him white, let alone make him praise one.

Chen Jinsheng, whose head was still wrapped in bandages, gave an affirmative hum. There was a faint note of pride in his voice.

“Yes. It feels great!”

I suppressed my unease.

I told myself he was only like this because he’d lost his memory.

But how could someone lose his memory and forget the things he used to fear along with it?

…

Once we got home, Chen Jinsheng was far more industrious than usual.

He began exploring how all the appliances and furniture worked.

“Wifey, how do I use this?”

“Wifey, can I use this to bake you little cakes?”

…

Then, while tidying the living room, he pulled a lace blindfold from under a pillow and stared at it in confusion.

“Wifey, this is…”

I fell silent.

Chen Jinsheng and I had been engaged and living together for two years. I was reserved, and the few needs I did have were perfectly conventional.

That thing definitely wasn’t mine.

Chen Jinsheng pressed his lips together. Whatever had occurred to him made his ears turn crimson.

I opened my mouth, then stopped.

In the end, I couldn’t help warning him.

“It belongs to someone else.”

As though to prove me right, Jiang Yuan emerged from the bedroom with face cream freshly applied and let out a cry.

Blushing all over, she snatched the item away and hid it behind her back.

“Sorry, sis. That’s my blindfold. I forgot to put it away.”

All the color instantly drained from Chen Jinsheng’s face.

Pale and incredulous, he asked, “Why… is there someone else living in our home?”

I sighed.

“You don’t remember. Jiang Yuan is the childhood friend you brought here to stay.”

“You said it wasn’t safe for a young woman to live alone in a hotel.”

“You also told me not to overthink it. If anything could’ve happened between you two, you said you wouldn’t have gotten engaged to me in the first place.”

The moment I finished, Jiang Yuan’s smile dimmed.

“Jinsheng said I could treat this place like my own home. Besides, I saw this lying on the table, still unopened…”

I looked steadily at her.

“It was on my dressing table. Unopened or not, do you think what you did was appropriate?”

She said nothing.

The next second, Chen Jinsheng demanded loudly, “Maybe I was sick in the head and couldn’t tell right from wrong before, but you clearly have no sense of boundaries either.”

“At the end of the day, you’re only a guest. What gives you the right to touch things in my house—or use my wifey’s face cream?!”

“If your face is that big and you don’t have any cream, go smear mud on it.”

Furious, he strode forward and yanked the blindfold out of her hands.

Jiang Yuan was stunned.

“Jinsheng, are you kidding? I’m used to using all her things.”

His expression darkened when he heard the intimate way she called his name.

“Were you and I very close?”

Something was wrong with the situation before her.

Only then did she belatedly catch on.

“What’s gotten into you today?”

I watched with leisurely interest for quite a while before drawling, “He has amnesia.”

“I’m the only person he recognizes.”

Jiang Yuan’s face was livid when he shoved her out.

Right afterward, Chen Jinsheng not only tossed all her personal belongings out with astonishing speed, but also demanded that she return every transfer he’d ever sent her.

“Anything I did or said before today doesn’t count.”

“I refuse to acknowledge any of it!”

The door slammed shut with a bang.

Chen Jinsheng stood there pale, still immersed in his emotions.

“How can anyone act like that? It’s disgusting.”

He seemed to have forgotten.

He was the “disgusting” one.
