No Envy of Immortals - Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Xie Buyu brought me back to his home.
Once my body temperature returned to normal, my brain finally began to sluggishly function again.
I thought of His Highness Yuzhui, who was supposed to Descend to the Mortal Realm around the same time as me. Although I knew the Heavenly Emperor had likely only set a trap for me, I still decided to ask Xie Buyu a question.
“Has anyone else come to these mountains in the last few days?”
Xie Buyu, who was currently boiling water and cooking for me, shook his head. “This place is secluded from the world. I’ve never seen a single unfamiliar face.”
Since Xie Buyu said so, His Highness Yuzhui had most likely been sent to a safer location.
However, just to be safe, I should still search the surrounding area. Given that His Highness has such a fragile, crybaby personality, it would be much easier for me if I found him sooner rather than later.
While I was preoccupied with thoughts of Yuzhui, Xie Buyu glanced at me and suddenly set the wooden bucket of rice down heavily on the table.
“Miss Wen, stop thinking about irrelevant matters,” he said, handing me a bowl and chopsticks with a gentle smile. “You should eat while the food is hot.”
To be honest, Xie Buyu had the face of someone who lived on dew and moonlight. I had assumed his cooking would be just barely edible enough not to kill me.
But after one bite of the seemingly ordinary scrambled eggs, my eyes lit up.
I have extremely eccentric tastes; I like everything I eat to be intensely sweet and intensely spicy. Very few people can share a pot with me.
Yet the dishes Xie Buyu served perfectly suited my palate. They were so delicious that I almost wanted to stay and freeload off his meals for the rest of my life.
Because my taste buds were so thoroughly satisfied, I spent the meal with my head down, devouring everything like a whirlwind. I polished off enough food for eight people.
By the time I set down the emptied wooden bucket with a sigh of contentment, Xie Buyu had just finished his last sip of plain congee and set down his own utensils at the same time.
Looking at Xie Buyu, who had only consumed a single bowl of plain congee, I felt a belated pang of guilt.
“Did I eat too much? I took all your food. Are you still hungry?”
Xie Buyu’s expression was full of pleasure, as if he hadn’t just drunk a bowl of bland rice water but had instead enjoyed a grand feast.
“Not at all. I need to maintain the curve of my waist. One bowl of white congee is just right for me.”
I instinctively glanced at his slender waist beneath his light robes. Realizing how rude that was, I quickly averted my gaze.
“Your figure is fine as it is. There’s no need to be so hard on yourself.”
Xie Buyu lowered his head with a shy smile. “It’s not good enough yet.”
Before I could try to persuade him further, he skipped over the topic and urged me to go to bed and rest.
And so, despite thinking something dangerous might happen tonight, I found myself lying dazed on the heated earthen bed Xie Buyu had prepared, my stomach full and warm.
Originally, I wanted to maintain a serious attitude and carefully consider my next move.
But I don’t know if it was because I was too full or because Xie Buyu had made the bed too cozy.
As I huddled under the covers with my chin tucked over the edge of the quilt, my eyes began to close involuntarily.
I comforted myself by saying I was just closing my eyes to rest my spirit, that my consciousness was still sharp and I could rationally analyze the situation…
And then.
And then I didn’t know a thing.
