One day, a commotion suddenly broke out outside the sect.

Something strange had happened in the human world.

In just six months, more than ten thousand men had lost their willies.

So many disappearing into thin air, without a single wound left behind—it had to be the work of malevolent spirits.

The common people had sought help from plenty of cultivators. The spirits had taken the bits between those cultivators’ legs too.

Panic spread.

People went to other sects for help, but the sects couldn’t avoid them fast enough. No cultivator wanted anything to do with it.

Finally, they came to Xuanguang Sect.

They kowtowed and begged Xiao Jingzhe to help, praising him to the skies.

“Sect Master Xiao, you have the bearing of a true immortal. Please save us!”

“Sect Master Xiao, you’re the greatest sword cultivator in the world. No one else can save us!”

“Saving every living soul is a deed of enormous merit. Capture that spirit, and you’ll surely ascend to immortality. We promise to become your followers and build temples where we can burn incense to you!”

I craned my neck, wanting to go out and watch the fun.

Xiao Jingzhe pressed my head down. “Still your mind.”

“I can’t. I want to pull their trousers down and see what’s going on.”

“Hmm?”

I immediately mimed sealing my lips.

The people outside knelt for a day and a night. When Xiao Jingzhe still didn’t leave the mountain, they began to curse him.

“Some immortal you are! Letting people die without helping! You’re worse than an animal!”

“We’ve begged this long and you still won’t help. You’ll never become an immortal!”

“Heartless bastard! May ten thousand tribulation bolts strike you dead!”

Whether they praised or cursed him, Xiao Jingzhe remained unmoved.

I couldn’t take it. Rolling up my sleeves, I said furiously, “Xiao Jingzhe, let me out. I’ll knock their teeth all over the ground!”

He patted my head, amusement in his beautiful eyes.

“All right.”

He took me outside.

He had intended to deal with this from the beginning.

As soon as Xiao Jingzhe emerged, those who had cursed him changed their tune. They knelt and sang his praises again.

A woman in the crowd was holding a baby boy.

Xiao Jingzhe lifted the swaddling cloth. Even the infant had been affected.

“Has your family committed any deed that would damage its moral merit?”

Her husband hurried to answer. “No! We’re honest people who live honest lives!”

The woman looked grief-stricken. She seemed to want to say something, but held back.

“You tell me,” Xiao Jingzhe said.

She burst into tears.

Her husband slapped her. “Crying, crying, always crying! You’ve cried away all our family’s good fortune!”

I cracked a sunflower seed between my teeth. “Then your family’s good fortune must have been awfully fragile.”

Xiao Jingzhe moved his fingers. I kicked the man flying.

Delighted, I tugged at his sleeve. “That was fun. Let’s do it again.”

“Business first.”

“Oh.”

The woman couldn’t hold it in any longer. “Retribution! It’s all retribution!” she shouted. “I gave birth to six daughters, and my husband threw every one of them into an abandoned-infant tower. My poor daughters have come back for revenge!”

Her husband crawled back, swearing. “You bitch! It’s your fault for having so many money-draining girls! I’ve lost my precious thing, and it’s all because of you!”

I struck his chest with my palm. His spine and ribs shattered. Blood poured from his mouth, and he soon stopped breathing.

Someone shouted, “The immortals are killing people at random!”

I looked at Xiao Jingzhe. “He killed six people. Can’t I kill him?”

Xiao Jingzhe stroked my head.

“Well done, Xiaoyuan.”

I lifted my chin proudly at his praise.

The crowd recoiled in terror. They had blood on their hands too.

“You! And all of you!”

The woman had just lost her husband, but there was no grief on her face. Only the relief of someone freed from shackles.

Pointing at the crowd, she roared, “You’re all beasts who value boys over girls! They’re not malevolent spirits. They’re the daughters you murdered. You despise women, so now they’re making sure you can’t be men either, or have sons! Ha! Good! Good for them!”

The crowd tried to hit her.

Xiao Jingzhe snapped his fingers. Every one of them froze.

No baby boys in the abandoned-infant towers; no girls in the schoolrooms.

Of all the human world’s customs, its centuries of favoring boys over girls was the one I hated most.

What was so noble about having an extra bit of flesh between your legs?

They were born from between women’s legs, yet had no room for women. Every rule they made was designed to bully them.

Once we’d learned what had happened, Xiao Jingzhe took me away from Xuanguang Sect on his flying sword.

“Xiao Jingzhe,” I urged him, “they deserve what happened. You don’t need to help them.”

“I’m not helping them. If the dead girls are responsible, then they’ve all become vengeful spirits. So many vengeful spirits could endanger every living soul. I cannot ignore it. The girls are innocent. I’ll send them to the ghost realm to be reincarnated.”

Sect Master Xiao was practically glowing.

So what on earth had happened later? How had this beacon of righteousness, determined to save the world, turned into the villain who destroyed it?

“Then make sure you protect Little Jingzhe,” I said worriedly. “I’m still very fond of him.”

Xiao Jingzhe: “…”

His ears went so red they might have dripped blood.

I didn’t understand. I was discussing a serious matter with him in all seriousness. What was he so shy about?
