Reborn to Win Over Myself - Chapter 1
In my previous life, I died on the battlefield. When I opened my eyes again, I found a System in my mind.
It told me to win someone over, and that once I succeeded, it would reward me.
I asked casually, [Why me?]
According to the System, that person was extraordinarily difficult to win over. Before me, nine people had already failed.
And I was the tenth mission taker.
My mind was still filled with the blood and carnage of the battlefield, and I had no interest whatsoever in this matter of winning someone over.
I closed my eyes again and refused. [Not interested. Find someone else.]
The System froze for a long while before asking, [Don’t you want to know who the mission target is?]
I answered perfunctorily, [Who?]
The System said, [Huaiyang.]
Huaiyang was the name I had used fifteen years ago.
I was stunned for a long time. In the end, I burst out laughing.
Only then did I finally begin to take this System that had appeared out of nowhere seriously.
Fifteen years ago, after all the rises and falls I had suffered in this world, I was cripplingly insecure and painfully sensitive.
Back then, I would not have trusted anyone.
I laughed until tears streamed down my face, and finally nodded.
[All right. I accept.]
The body the System gave me was named Shen Ning.
I quickly realized that this was the Shen family’s eldest young lady, the one who had died young. She had been sickly since birth, practically raised in medicine jars.
The original body’s owner had already passed away. Though I had taken over, this body remained frail and heavy.
I coughed once, and with a maid supporting me, I went to Liuhua Lane.
Liuhua Lane-home to the most famous brothel, and also what had once been my greatest nightmare.
When I saw Huaiyang, it was in a dilapidated rear courtyard in Liuhua Lane.
It was raining at the time. The place was overgrown with weeds, with snakes and rats lurking about.
And the me from fifteen years ago was surrounded by a group of children, being punched and kicked.
“A thing born by a mother but raised by none. Just looking at you brings bad luck.”
“Are you mute? Why aren’t you saying anything? Did we not hit you hard enough?”
“How did anyone end up raising such a useless thing?”
Huaiyang was filthy and disheveled, curled up with her head in her arms, not making a sound.
Holding an umbrella, I stood quietly not far away and watched.
I loathed the me from fifteen years ago. She was weak, useless, and allowed anyone to bully her.
The System asked from the side, [Do you want to go help her?]
I shook my head.
That group of children eventually grew tired of beating her. With the rain still falling, they kicked her a few more times, found it boring, tossed a few leftover steamed buns onto the ground, and left.
Huaiyang’s curled-up body lay drenched in the rain. Only after a long while did she slowly move.
She lay on the ground, utterly wretched, and reached out with difficulty for one of the buns.
The bun was stained with mud and rainwater, yet she seemed completely unaware.
She simply devoured it ravenously.
The System asked again, [You’re still not going to help?]
Instead, I asked it another question. [How did the previous mission takers try to win her over?]
The System answered honestly, [Some redeemed her and gave her status and standing. Some beat up those children for her. Some took her to have a proper meal… But they all failed.]
The System suddenly caught on and asked in a curious, probing tone, [Hey, tell me-what did you want back then?]
What did I want?
