Restless Heart - Chapter 1
Chapter 1
I died.
I died taking a sword for the Deposed Crown Prince.
He was my mission target.
Unfortunately, I failed to win him over.
His fortune had scattered, and during the palace coup, the Deposed Crown Prince reached the end of the road. He was cut down by the seventh prince, Xie Chenyuan.
Xie Chenyuan’s second strike was the one that reached him.
When the first sword thrust came, the Deposed Crown Prince dragged me in front of him to block it.
The blade pierced straight through my heart.
Blood sprayed out, staining the plain dress I wore crimson.
The System covered my eyes and pulled my soul free in time.
I lost consciousness, so I never felt the pain or fear.
When I woke again, the System was taking my soul to retrieve my body.
“Let’s go.”
“That body was made really well. Patch it up and wash it clean, and you can still use it.”
I followed the speck of light before me, drifting above the imperial city.
From far away, I heard one of Xie Chenyuan’s advisers say, “Tsk. He was his brother, after all. His Majesty had intended to leave him with an intact corpse.”
“He really didn’t know what was good for him. How dare he pull someone in front of him to block a sword?”
“Well, look at him now. Pieces here, pieces there. You couldn’t even pick him all up.”
Below the city gate, blood wound across the ground in a little river.
The stench of iron rose to the sky.
I didn’t dare go any farther. I poked the speck of light in front of me.
“You go. I’m scared of corpses.”
“What if I’m in pieces too?”
The System was very helpless.
“Then I’ll just have to make another one.”
Chapter 2
I crouched outside the palace gate and waited.
With nothing to do, my mind began to wander.
I was an orphaned soul the System had picked up.
It made me a body and raised me in one of its little worlds.
Until I turned eighteen.
Then it told me, “I have to raise you in a different world. The Child of Fortune in this one is insane.”
I didn’t understand.
So it explained.
Every world had a Child of Fortune.
If something was wrong with the Child of Fortune, the world would collapse.
The way to save it was to win over that Child of Fortune.
The System couldn’t find any souls willing to volunteer. It spent all day looking miserable, and even its true form, a ball of light, had gone all wrinkly.
I raised my hand. “I’ll go.”
And so, I became the Crown Prince’s childhood sweetheart-Lady Wuyang, Pei Shuyao.
Sure enough, my mission target was insane.
He didn’t like me. Relying on the fact that he was the Crown Prince, he gave me attitude every single day.
I brought him pastries I had made with my own hands.
He turned around and tossed them to Xie Chenyuan.
“That woman gave them to me. They’re beneath me, so you can have them.”
He humiliated two people at once.
Back then, Xie Chenyuan was truly pitiful.
He lived with his consort mother in the Cold Palace and couldn’t even eat his fill.
The pastries on the ground were dirty, but he still picked them up.
I got angry.
The next time I had something good, I went around my mission target and gave it straight to Xie Chenyuan.
No middleman taking a cut.
