Chapter 3

I poked my head out from behind Shen Xiao and, before they could start fighting, picked the roasted rabbit back up.

Please. It smelled this good, and it hadn’t been on the ground for more than three seconds. It was still edible.

With a regretful sigh, I blew on it and was just about to stuff it into my mouth when Xie Fuzhou’s expression softened.

“It’s dirty. Don’t eat it. I’ll roast you another one.”

The moment I heard that, Shen Xiao smacked the back of my hand and knocked the roasted rabbit to the ground.

This was the first time I got a clear look at Shen Xiao. His complexion was a little dark, and his features were upright and stern, the sort that should have looked proper and composed. Unfortunately, his expression was arrogant and disdainful.

“Don’t eat something so filthy. Since when did you become this greedy?”

Go on, then, my dear living disaster.

Because I was starving. I could eat anything. Was that a crime?

I hadn’t eaten in ages, and the moment I finally sat down and took two bites of fragrant roasted rabbit, you ruined it.

When a glutton like me gets hungry, I could swallow an entire cow alive.

Shen Xiao, I’m docking you fifteen points!

Over there, Xie Fuzhou seemed to think Shen Xiao had scolded me into tears. He raised his sword and hacked straight at the crown of Shen Xiao’s head.

[Damn it. What is that dog barking about?]

[He made her shed two tears. I’ll cripple both his arms.]

The two of them started fighting again. I was so anxious I wanted to stop them, but there was no way for me to jump in, so I could only shout, “Stop fighting already-”

The junior sister in white popped out from who knew where and leaned against me, panting.

“Senior Sister, you really can run. We chased you for a full day and night and still couldn’t catch up.”

I gave her a guilty smile, still trying to figure out how to explain the fact that I had rescued the wrong person, but she had already pulled me into a deep hug.

“To save me and Senior Brother, you didn’t hesitate to risk your life. You carried him three hundred li away from us overnight. Senior Sister, honestly, I’m crying so hard…”

I distinctly heard my back teeth grind together.

“So tell me. Why. Does Senior Brother Shen. Wear black?”

Junior Sister looked thrilled, as if she were about to share some huge secret.

“White makes him look darker. Because of his complexion, Senior Brother naturally prefers black.”

Then she called my name in her clear, crisp voice.

“Senior Martial Sister Xu Xi, you like Senior Brother so much. How do you not even know that?”

My mind instantly went as blank as a goose feather.

This was absurd. The kind of absurd where you do a meticulous calculation for a math problem and somehow conclude there are only 0.5 people on the bus.

Xu Xi was the first love of Shen Xiao, the male lead, and also his first Dao companion.

Yes. First. There were many more lined up after her.

Those who knew the truth thought she had married Shen Xiao. Those who didn’t would think she had married into the servants’ quarters.

She devoted herself to being the woman behind Shen Xiao in every possible way. She was clearly in the Golden Core Stage, but for Shen Xiao’s sake, she willingly let her cultivation stagnate. She handed over all the finest spirit pills, magical artifacts, and spirit beasts to him. In the end, for the spirit sword Shen Xiao seized, she sacrificed every last bit of her bones and blood.

The man she loved did not shed a single tear for her. He accepted her sacrifice as a matter of course, and after she died, he never missed her for even a moment.

Xu Xi and I shared the same name. Earlier, when I was drinking water by the stream and saw that my appearance hadn’t changed, even the red mole on my right wrist was exactly the same, I thought I had transmigrated here in my own body. Now, I couldn’t tell anymore.

Who could have imagined that I had become Xu Xi from the book?

It was like a kind person spitting on you in the dead of winter. Warm, but utterly disgusting.
