Chapter 48

The scene Yan Jinge and Yi Haotian were scheduled to film today was the first meeting between their two characters.

One was a straightforward, upright police officer, while the other was a seemingly kind college student who was secretly a psychopathic serial killer. Even a mundane meeting, if performed well, would be fraught with tension.

At this point in the script, the story had reached the third episodic arc.

The male lead, Ding Jian, was already in a relationship with the female lead, Lu Yue.

Yan Jinge’s character was Lu Yue’s younger cousin, Wang Jialiang, who was also the protagonist of this particular arc. Having heard about Lu Yue and Ding Jian being together, he claimed he wanted to vet the man for his sister, leading to this meeting.

“Sorry, I’m late.”

Inside the restaurant.

Ding Jian, who had specifically dressed up in a suit for the occasion, arrived late. Seeing Lu Yue and Wang Jialiang sitting together, he paused briefly before pulling out the chair opposite Lu Yue and sitting down.

“Ding Jian, this is the cousin I told you about. His name is Wang Jialiang. He’s a student at Imperial Capital University, and his grades are excellent.” Lu Yue smiled and gave Wang Jialiang’s arm a gentle tug. “Liangzi, this is your brother-in-law, Ding Jian.”

“Hello, Brother Ding Jian,” Wang Jialiang said, offering a shy smile.

Ding Jian didn’t respond immediately; instead, he couldn’t help but study Wang Jialiang.

“…Have I seen you somewhere before?” Ding Jian asked suddenly.

Wang Jialiang had refined, handsome features and a friendly face that made people instinctively like him at first glance. Because he was so exceptionally good-looking-the kind of face one wouldn’t easily forget-Ding Jian felt he remembered him.

Wang Jialiang was also observing Ding Jian.

Hearing Ding Jian’s words, a subtle change flickered in his eyes, carrying an indescribable quality that seemed to hide both smugness and cunning. He leaned back, shifting his posture and crossing his arms as he smiled. “Is Brother Ding Jian trying to get on my good side on purpose? I won’t just hand my sister over to you just because you said something like that.”

Ding Jian was taken aback and scratched his head sheepishly. “How could I?” Thanks to Wang Jialiang’s remark, Ding Jian’s train of thought was diverted, and he didn’t dwell on it further.

The meal proceeded in a relatively harmonious atmosphere.

Afterward, Lu Yue wanted to go shopping with Ding Jian, so she casually gave Wang Jialiang a few hundred yuan to send him on his way.

Once the two of them left the restaurant, Wang Jialiang remained in his seat by the window. However, his posture had changed again, becoming leisurely and relaxed.

He didn’t look out the window. Instead, he stared at his own hands and let out a faint, shallow smile.

It was a very pure smile.

Like a child who had finally received the toy he wanted.

“Not bad. The foreshadowing was there, but it wasn’t so obvious that people would guess it’s you right away.”

Director Xu was very satisfied with Yan Jinge’s performance.

This scene was a one-take wonder. Even Yi Haotian, who had been completely out of it yesterday, was very much in character today, performing significantly better. Although there were a few minor details that didn’t quite fit the persona of a police officer, it wasn’t a big deal; they could just be edited out.

Director Xu distributed his praise evenly, complimenting everyone.

Standing to the side, Yi Haotian felt none of the joy that usually came with being praised.

His gaze remained fixed on Yan Jinge.

While filming earlier, he had clearly felt that Yan Jinge was completely different from what he had imagined.

Since the three of them were seated throughout the scene, there was no blocking to speak of. However, Yan Jinge’s various small movements seemed endless, portraying the Third Male Lead’s personality and hidden identity to near perfection.
At the time, it might not have seemed like much, but once the Third Male Lead’s hidden identity was revealed later on, many viewers would inevitably go back to the early episodes to look for clues.

At that point, the subtle movements Yan Jinge had just performed would become essential.

While acting alongside him, Yi Haotian even felt as though the role of the Third Male Lead had been tailor-made for Yan Jinge.

This also meant that Yi Haotian, who had originally intended to put Yan Jinge in his place, never found an opportunity to do so.

…In fact, he felt like he was being led by the nose.

It was as if he were being pulled into the scene by Yan Jinge.

But how was that possible?

He had filmed several dramas already, while Yan Jinge was a complete novice. It should have been obvious who was superior.

“Bro, the official character posters are out,” his assistant whispered, leaning in.

Yi Haotian was already feeling irritable, but he took the phone from his assistant’s hand anyway.

“My oppa looks so handsome in these photos! Give the photographer a raise! Also, Haotian and Jinge look so good together. Their height difference is the cutest!”

“Look at this hidden gem I found! I’ve already saved it as my lock screen!”

“Ahhh, Haotian is my husband!”

“Stop calling him your husband upstairs! He’s sleeping in my arms right now. What if you wake him up?”

“Wow, my beautiful Zuidong looks so stunning in a police uniform!”

“This is clearly a show about a male and female lead. Can certain fujoshis please respect the original work and keep your shipping to yourselves? Posting it right here-what, are you trying to ship them for the whole world to see?”

“Taking our Dongdong away…”

“To be honest, even though I think Yan Jinge is a total ‘vase,’ he really is a beautiful vase… He’s just wearing casual clothes, but he somehow gives off fashion model vibes.”

“…I’m about to jump ship for a second.”

“Yan Jinge is so shameless, always clinging to my oppa. My oppa is really suffering. And Yan Jinge actually had the nerve to unfollow him? So shameless.”

“Exactly. He’s just a bridge-burning piece of trash.”

Yi Haotian scrolled through the comments, finding several that improved his mood.

But Yan Jinge had actually unfollowed him?

Yi Haotian hadn’t noticed before.

“What did Yan Jinge post on Weibo?” he asked.

“He hasn’t posted anything,” the assistant replied.

Yi Haotian frowned.

Then why would Yan Jinge suddenly unfollow him?

Even if they had a falling out, they were still in the same production. Out of respect for Director Xu, he shouldn’t have done that.

As expected of someone with a sugar daddy-he really was different.

He didn’t even care about offending people anymore.

Yi Haotian felt a surge of disdain.

People like this, who acted like they were on top of the world just because they found a benefactor, would eventually fall back into the mud. When that happened, they would never be able to get back up. He really had nothing to say to someone like that, but…

Yan Jinge had been so disrespectful lately and had made him so uncomfortable. Since he couldn’t get even through acting, he would have to make Yan Jinge pay some other way…
