Chapter 1

I had spent a long time seriously reviewing and preparing for this semester’s opening exam.

Even my deskmate couldn’t help saying, “Your grades are already that good, and you’re still working this hard. Are the rest of us supposed to survive?”

I shook my head. “I still can’t let my guard down.”

She leaned back with a sigh. “What’s there to be on guard about? Academic God Xu, just relax. That scholarship is practically yours.”

I lowered my eyes.

I hoped so.

After all, I really needed that money. It would be enough to cover my sister’s treatment fees.

“Yu Sheng!”

My deskmate suddenly called out. I quickly snapped back to myself and looked toward the corridor outside the window.

Yu Sheng, who had been walking straight ahead, stopped when she called him. His gaze met mine first, and the milk tea in his hand instinctively shifted behind his back.

“Don’t hide it. We all saw,” my deskmate said cheerfully. “It’s for Shen Tingxuan again, right? Exams are about to start, and you still have the mood for this?”

Yu Sheng turned and came into the classroom, placing the milk tea on my desk. “I bought it for you.”

I was a little surprised. After a brief pause, the tips of my ears began to heat.

My deskmate was still teasing him off to the side, but I looked down at the milk tea in front of me and silently sighed. This was the flavor I disliked the most. His lie was far too perfunctory and obvious.

Lately, Yu Sheng’s mind hadn’t been on studying at all. All he wanted was to run to the class next door.

At first, I thought it was normal for boys our age to be playful. Until one day, after using the restroom and heading back upstairs, I happened to run into Yu Sheng standing at the entrance of our classroom in his school uniform T-shirt.

Both his hands rested on the railing in front of him. His good-looking eyes were slightly narrowed, and it was obvious he was smiling.

I followed his line of sight and saw a pretty girl with a high ponytail. She stood at the doorway of her classroom, unhappily removing her manicure. Even with her brows furrowed, she looked beautiful.

She was famous at school-Shen Tingxuan.

Whenever people talked about her, they always said, “That girl who’s especially pretty.”

But she wasn’t just pretty. Her grades were excellent too, and she had always stayed firmly in the top ten of our grade without ever dropping out.

It was only natural that a girl like that would have admirers.

But if that admirer was Yu Sheng, then my life was getting a little too melodramatic.

Yu Sheng and I had been neighbors since we were little. Back then, he was always coming up with all kinds of excuses to have me teach him how to solve problems, and whenever he found something fun, I was the first person he shared it with.

He would also take me out late at night to set off fireworks. At midnight, with his ears red, he shouted up at the sky:

“I want to get into the same university as Xu Zhouling! I want to set off fireworks for her every year!”

I looked up at the fireworks and smiled. He looked at me and smiled.

“Xu Zhouling, after we graduate, let’s date, okay?”

“Okay.”

Even now, I still couldn’t forget that moment.

Which made it all the harder to admit that Yu Sheng really had fallen for someone else.
