Wen Lichu stared at me with her wide, fawnlike eyes, confusion written all over them.

“You… you… you…”

She tried several times, but not a complete sentence emerged.

I had no intention of frightening her so soon. With a soft laugh, I said, “You don’t have to answer now. Go home and think carefully. Give me your answer in three days.”

I rose to leave.

Before I could take a step, someone caught my hand.

Her touch was soft, her fingers almost boneless.

I looked down at her. A mist gathered in her eyes, and her voice was barely above a whisper.

“I…”

“I want to.”

I studied her for two seconds.

She was too shy to meet my gaze and lowered her lashes, hiding whatever lay beneath them.

It did not matter.

I stroked the top of her head and reassured her.

“Don’t worry. I’ll find the best caregivers for your mother. You won’t have to worry about her rehabilitation expenses after the operation either. I’ll take care of everything.”

Wen Lichu looked up at me, gratitude filling her eyes. “Thank you, Sister.”

I smiled. “You won’t need to thank me anymore.”

She had suffered enough with that impotent husband of mine.

She would never have to suffer again.

I arranged the best medical team for Wen Lichu’s mother.

Then I moved Wen Lichu into a large apartment I owned downtown.

She stood in front of the enormous floor-to-ceiling windows, stared out in shock, then turned to me as if she had a question she could not bring herself to ask.

My lips curved almost imperceptibly. I waited.

After watching me for several seconds, she asked timidly, “Is that the Xu Group building across the street?”

I nodded without hesitation. “Yes.”

Fear deepened in her eyes as we looked through the glass together.

The headquarters of my husband’s Xu Group stood directly across from the apartment.

I did not tell her that during the day, one could see into Xu Tingshen’s office on the top floor.

I rested a hand lightly on her shoulder and soothed her. “Don’t worry. He doesn’t know this place exists.”

I had bought the apartment before our marriage. It was mine alone, and Xu Tingshen knew nothing about it.

He also did not know that before we married, I had stood in this very spot countless times, looking out at the Xu Group tower.

Color returned to Wen Lichu’s face when she heard my reassurance.

After settling her in, I went straight home.

Xu Tingshen walked past me, then stopped abruptly. His brows drew together as he turned.

“That scent on you…”

I raised my eyes. “What about it?”

He studied me for several seconds, his gaze darkening. “It smells familiar.”

I smiled but said nothing.

“That isn’t your usual perfume. Did you change it?”

I gave him a faint, knowing look and nodded.

His expression said he had solved the mystery. He bent toward me and sniffed at my neck. “A little too sweet. It doesn’t suit you.”

For once, I contradicted him. “I like it. That’s enough.”

Xu Tingshen paused, straightened, and said flatly, “Fine.”

I had not changed my perfume.

The scent on me belonged to Wen Lichu.

When Xu Tingshen first asked, I thought he might have noticed something.

He had noticed nothing at all.
