Chapter 0 Because I had gone so long without conceiving, my mother-in-law sent me to the temple for one night to pray for a child. But when I woke, my entire body ached, weak and sore. A month later, the physician felt my pulse and declared I was pregnant. Yet as my husband and I passed the temple on our way home, a mad old woman suddenly rushed out and blocked our path. Pointing at my belly, she screamed in a shrill voice, “What you’re carrying isn’t human! It’s a calamity sent from the heavens!” I stumbled back in terror, only to see Chu Ran, my husband who had always been so gentle, seize the old woman by the throat. “How could it be a calamity?” His fingers tightened. With a chilling smile, he turned his gaze on me. “What my wife carries is naturally my own flesh and blood, isn’t it?”
