Chapter 1

Ah, life really is impossible to figure out.

One second, I was wondering what I should eat after getting off work and going home. The next, I had transmigrated into the novel I’d been reading right before bed last night.

The novel was about Song Shurou, the Song family’s unfavored legitimate eldest daughter, who married in her younger sister’s place. She was wed to Shen Yu, the young general rumored to have crippled legs. After marriage, the two of them went through all sorts of hardships, finally opened their hearts to each other, and ultimately achieved their happily ever after.

And I-a proud successor of socialism-had somehow transmigrated into the body of Song Wanwan, the troublesome supporting villainess in the story!

This was a death sentence.

In the novel, the dramatic little troublemaker Song Wanwan ended up having both legs broken by the male lead before being thrown into a military camp beyond the frontier to serve as a camp prostitute, living a life where she could neither live nor die.

The moment I thought of the original owner’s ending, my scalp went numb and my legs started shaking…

Thankfully, when I transmigrated over, the original owner was still just a tiny little dumpling. Over the years, relying on my expertise in throwing tantrums and rolling on the floor-along with my master-level cooking skills-I finally managed to farm a decent amount of goodwill from the female lead.

Not only that, but as someone whose only goal was to survive, I also diligently took up the banner for the male and female leads’ ship.

Once the male lead gets what he wants, please, please let me go!!!

Today was the female lead’s first visit back to her maiden home after the wedding.

I had calculated the timing perfectly and was carrying a bowl of fermented rice osmanthus custard, happily rushing toward the reception hall, when the female lead intercepted me right in the little garden.

Song Shurou raised one slender brow and said lightly, “Well, well. I was wondering who it was. So it’s my terribly busy little sister.”

“Well, well. I was wondering who it was. So it’s my elder sister who’s already married out of the family,” I shot back, refusing to be outdone.

As soon as we finished speaking, we looked at each other and burst into laughter behind our hands.

After that, I seized the chance to ask about the progress of their relationship.

“It’s not as if you don’t know what Shen Yu’s body is like. We’re just getting by together. What difference could there be?”

“Huh?” I was utterly shocked. “You two haven’t done this and that, and then that?”

Song Shurou shook her head, looking rather gloomy.

That couldn’t be right. I remembered the novel saying Shen Yu’s leg ailment was real, but it never said he couldn’t perform as a man.

I wanted to ask a few more questions, but seeing that my elder sister didn’t want to say anything else, I comforted her by saying that I had asked a hermit master to read his fortune, and that Young General Shen’s legs would recover sooner or later.

Not long after, someone from the palace suddenly came to summon me inside, and my elder sister rose to take her leave as well.

When she returned to Shen Mansion, I didn’t have time to see her off, so I could only have her take several large packages of pastries I had made, along with a box of jewelry inlaid with turquoise.

From the palace matron, I learned that Princess Qingning had fallen ill again, which was why I had been summoned to the palace to attend to her illness.

In the original novel, the original owner and Princess Qingning did not have much interaction.

After all, as the vicious second female lead of the entire book, Princess Qingning was the Emperor’s most beloved younger sister. How could the daughter of a mere fifth-rank censor possibly climb high enough to be connected with her?

But for the sake of the male and female leads’ love, I charged in.

The novel wrote that on Princess Qingning’s fifteenth birthday banquet, the Emperor attended in person. But during the banquet, several waves of assassins suddenly appeared.

Amid the chaos, Princess Qingning lost her footing and fell into the lake, fortunately rescued in time by Fu Nanzhou.

From then on, Princess Qingning became the little tail trailing after Fu Nanzhou. Later, Qingning found a portrait of the female lead in Fu Nanzhou’s study.

Burning with rage, Qingning immediately devoted herself to trying to kill the female lead.

Though after a series of moves as fierce as a tiger, she successfully got herself killed instead…

To be honest, when I was reading the book, I actually quite liked Qingning’s personality-bold in love and hate.

But I couldn’t understand it. With her status, she could like anyone she wanted. Why did she have to fall for that scheming, black-bellied Fu Nanzhou from the book?

Was it just because Fu Nanzhou was sharp and capable, skilled at planning, and had a foxlike face so gorgeous and seductive it seemed to carry the warmth of spring?

Oh. Then never mind. I get it. I want a piece of that too.

On the day of the princess’s birthday banquet, I took advantage of the chaos to shove aside Fu Nanzhou, who was gradually approaching her. Then, under everyone’s watchful eyes, I used the butterfly stroke I had painstakingly trained for years to rescue Princess Qingning from the water.

To enhance the atmosphere, I even thoughtfully wrapped my outer robe tightly around her dripping-wet body.

The scene at the time was extremely warm and touching.

If only there hadn’t been a dazed and muddled Fu Nanzhou lying nearby after his fall…

Also, ever since that time she fell into the water, Princess Qingning’s health had become fragile. Every few days, she would call me into the palace to attend to her illness. Naturally, I became a frequent visitor to the palace.

I figured this wasn’t bad at all. On one hand, I had snuffed out that ill-fated romance between the two of them. On the other, I could keep an eye on Qingning and stop her from stirring up any trouble.

Two birds with one stone. I really am too clever!
