Chapter 167

The next day.

Beili woke up.

Her eyes were still hazy with sleep as she reached out to her side. When her hand didn’t find Ashera’s cold body, she thought he had left, and a strange sensation bubbled up in her heart.

She stared blankly at the ceiling, lost in thought.

Just then, a small ball of black fluff trotted up from the foot of the bed. It rubbed its head against her face and let out a soft “baa,” as if saying good morning.

“How did you end up at the foot of the bed?”

Beili blinked her red eyes, letting it nuzzle against her cheek and neck.

“I thought you’d left.”

The Black Lamb lifted its head, and the familiar voice of the youth came from its slightly parted mouth.

“When you… sleep… you always… hide from me.”

He sounded aggrieved.

Beili listened and let her lips curl into a smile, explaining, “It’s because you’re too cold.”

Butterfly Valley only became warm during the day when the sun was out. Once the sun set, a layer of cold mist would rise, and the temperature throughout the valley would plummet.

That was why her duvet was so fluffy and thick.

“If the weather gets hot, I won’t hide from you when I sleep,” she said.

By then, he would be a perfect cooling ice pack.

The Black Lamb tilted its head as if contemplating her words.

Then, the youth’s voice drifted out again.

“When it gets… hot… you won’t… hide from me.”

That was true.

But without the word ‘weather,’ why did that sentence sound so strange?

Before she could speak, the sound of footsteps and cheerful humming echoed outside the room. A figure strode inside.

Beili’s gaze only had time to catch a glimpse of an exaggerated feather hat worn at a jaunty angle before the other person pulled back the gauze curtains. The woman reached out, ready to pull her into an embrace and a morning kiss.

But after spreading her arms, the woman stopped.

“Luoluo, don’t bring the lamb onto the bed.”

Madam Constance glanced at those golden eyes, her brows furrowing.

“You didn’t let it stay on the bed while you slept last night, did you? Oh-this wool is getting everywhere.”

With that, the woman reached out, intending to pick up the Black Lamb that stood between them.

The girl moved faster, quickly scooping the lamb into her arms and hiding it under the covers.

“Mother, it’s had a bath.”

She spoke urgently, only to remember a moment later.

Uh… though that was three days ago.

So, she added, “I’ll wash it again today. As for the wool, I’ll use a brush to groom it before bed until no more loose fur comes off.”

“Luoluo, you can’t be willful about this.”

Madam Constance shook her head.

Under the covers, the Black Lamb was nuzzling against her warm stomach.

Beili grabbed its fidgeting head while softening her voice to say to Madam Constance, “Mother, please don’t worry about my lamb. I’ll take good care of it.”

“Alright, alright-”

Madam Constance was completely defenseless whenever Bartholomew spoke to her so softly.

“Then remember to wash it often,” she quickly compromised. “Oh, not just often-every day before bed! It must be kept clean.”

“Of course.”

Beili nodded reassuringly, then asked, “Mother, is there a reason you came by so early today?”

Madam Constance remembered her purpose, her evenly painted red lips curving upward.

“To go get new clothes tailored with Mama!”

“Luoluo, Prince Cyril’s Coming-of-Age Ceremony is approaching. The palace will be even more lively then than it was on Royal Hunting Day.”

As soon as Madam Constance finished speaking, she grabbed Bartholomew’s arm and pulled her out of bed, making her stand on the rug beside it.

While Beili was still processing this, the woman deftly pulled the pale white linen nightgown up and off her body, leaving her in nothing but…

Beili felt a sudden chill.

Her first reaction was to look down.

Right in the middle of the pale grey-purple duvet sat the petite lamb with its glossy black fur. Its four legs were tucked under its belly, and its head was raised, tilted slightly as its golden eyes ‘watched’ her.

Beili didn’t have time to wonder when it had moved from the pillow to the center of the bed.

She simply chanted in her mind three times: He is blind.

After the third time, though the tips of her ears were slightly red, she raised her hands with a calm expression to cover the two faint pink spots.

…

Madam Constance rummaged through Bartholomew’s wardrobe for a while before pulling a velvet grass-green gown out from a pile of black dresses. The wide neckline was adorned with neatly pleated pale white lace.

“This one!”

Constance turned around holding the dress, only to see Bartholomew shielding her chest with her arms.

“Drink more milk, darling,” Madam Constance teased with a smirk. “Though the growth is already quite good, Mama knows they can get even bigger.”

The Black Lamb tilted its head, one of its fluffy ears perking up.

She noticed it.

She wanted to cough up blood.

“Mother-” Enough, stop talking.

She called out in a warning tone.

“What’s the harm? Can’t you talk about these things with Mama?” Madam Constance laughed dismissively, walking closer while offering praise. “The shape is very beautiful…”

“It is. But-maybe next time.”

Beili interrupted her hurriedly, speaking with great solemnity.
