Chapter 266

By the time the two of them emerged from the cave, the sun was already about to sink below the edge of the desert.

The orange-red light of sunset fell across them at an angle.

Beili gently ran her fingers through the young man’s silver hair, now gilded with a layer of warm light.

Then she looked toward the two cows already lying in the grass to rest.

And at the little chicks huddled together for warmth in a patch of pale yellow on one cow’s back.

Beili raised a hand and pointed at them, asking the young man, “If you’re carrying me, how are you going to bring those guys back?”

The young man looked in the direction she was pointing.

“It’s fine. I’ll make it-make them behave.”

As they passed by, Beili heard the young man drop a single command.

“Follow.”

Then both cows stood up. One carried the little chicks, while the other picked up the cage from the ground in its mouth, and they followed obediently behind them.

Beili: …

“Wait a minute…”

Beili suddenly realized something. Puzzled, she lowered her voice and asked, “You still have Mana?”

Hadn’t it all been used up last time…?

And according to the dream setting she had established, Ashera had no way to draw Mana through killing and blood, so where had this guy’s Mana come from?

Before Beili could ask the Morpho Butterflies in her mind, the young man’s steps paused. Then he turned his head slightly and answered, “My Mana and his-his Mana are separate.”

“I thought you two shared the same Mana Pool.”

Beili was a little surprised.

The young man was quiet for two seconds before he said, “We do, but I keep-keep a portion for myself to use.”

After they had only exchanged a few words, Beili saw their brand-new mud house from far away.

A white, flat-roofed house stood quietly in the afterglow of sunset, peaceful and warm.

Before they even got close, Beili patted the young man’s shoulder and said, “Ashera, let’s go look at the side of the mud house.”

The silver-haired young man followed her words and walked over.

Before long, they saw a little lamb painted in black pigment on the white-coated wall.

The Black Lamb had lifted its head, and a butterfly rested on the tip of its black nose.

“They drew it so well.”

Beili couldn’t help sighing in admiration. She climbed down from the young man’s back, pointed at the dark little lamb design, and deliberately asked him, “Guess who this is?”

The young man did not answer her. His eyelashes merely curved gently.

When his gaze fell on the butterfly pattern, he said softly, “The colors… aren’t quite right.”

Beili followed his gaze.

Perhaps because blue-green was indeed difficult to mix, the butterfly wings had been painted with green on the inner layer and blue on the outer layer.

“It’s fine. They already did their best. This place is so remote-being able to pick out blue and green is already pretty good,” Beili said with a faint smile.

After that, she turned around and stood in front of the young man. Her red eyes lifted slightly as she looked at him with a trace of expectation.

“From now on, this will be our home. Do you like it?”

The young man was silent for a few seconds before he said, “I do.”

…

Year of Calamity-

[Livestock Plague and Boils, Hail and Locusts]

Just as the sky was beginning to brighten, all kinds of animals outside the house started calling.

The young man opened his eyes. The first thing he saw was a lock of silver-gray curls wrapped around his fingers, and only then the round little head beneath his palm.

And the girl buried in his arms.

The pure white thin blanket had slipped down, revealing a stretch of shoulder and back as fair as white jade.

There were still bite marks and kiss marks on her skin from the night before.

A black cat meowed, leaping from the cloth mat in the corner onto the windowsill, then meowed twice more at the two people in bed.

Only after the young man pulled the thin blanket up to cover the person in his arms did he turn his head to look at the black cat.
His voice was soft, but his tone was icy.

“Out.”

The black cat instantly went quiet. It hopped down from the windowsill and slipped out through the little pet door beneath the bedroom door.

It had made barely any noise, but the girl under the covers still woke up, her voice carrying the nasal softness of sleep.

“Is Little Black hungry…?”

The young man gathered her closer, resting his chin lightly against the crown of her head. His voice was gentle.

“Go back to sleep… I’ll feed, feed it in a bit.”

“All right, then…”

Her voice was soft as she nuzzled against him.

A moment later, she opened her crimson eyes again and tilted her face up to look at him.

“But I don’t think I’m sleepy anymore.”

The young man nodded as if he understood perfectly, then lowered his head and kissed her.

“I… didn’t… mean that…”

The young man deliberately ignored the words that followed and kept kissing her. The thin white blanket was pulled up, wrapping around them both.

Like a white cloud.

The white cloud was nudged along, gradually pressing toward the wall.

Sunlight slanted through the gap in the cloth curtains and fell into the room. Time drifted slowly by in a haze of tenderness and lingering warmth.

After two cows, three sheep, and more chickens and ducks than could be counted, Beili had picked up a little black cat in the Town.

During the Year of Calamity, most people could barely take care of themselves, let alone their pets.

Beili named it “Little Black.”

Little Black had been warned by the young man, so it did not dare slip in through the pet door. But hunger drove it to pace outside the bedroom door, where it let out a few more meows.

A few faint sounds came from beneath the thin white blanket.

A little while later…

The silver-haired young man, his hair in disarray, was pushed out from under the covers.

…

In Tilisha, men’s lower garments were linen wraparound kilts, while their upper bodies were almost always bare. They would then wear broad collars and arm ornaments made of gold and gemstones.

After being pushed out, the silver-haired young man got up and put on a neatly pleated black linen men’s kilt.

Only after fastening on each of his accessories did he leave the room and go to the kitchen to make breakfast… no, lunch.

The young man stared silently at Little Black for several seconds, until the cat was so frightened that its fur bristled. Only then did he flick a finger, sending cat food flying into the little bowl in the corner.

With a snap of his fingers, a cluster of silver flame sprang to life on the stove.

He set a flat pan over it, warmed two thin slices of bread with butter, then spread them with a thick layer of jam.

He brewed half a cup of strong hot black tea, then mixed in half a cup of milk.

Only then did the young man carry it into the room.

Beili had already changed into her dress.

She took a makeup mirror from her Spatial Bracelet and examined her waist, her neck, her shoulders, even her arms. They were all…

She raised her hand and summoned several Morpho Butterflies, letting them help erase the marks someone had left behind.

She had always known Ashera in his Youth Form was clingy.

Back when he used to pester her into helping him by hand, she had already experienced it. Now, in the tent, they had unlocked a new method-he could cling to her from night all the way until morning.

She had secretly sped up time several times, and every time she opened her eyes, it was…

He seemed a little obsessed with this matter.

As if he had discovered the happiest thing in the world and only wanted to sink into it forever.

…

“Eat. I spread a lot, a lot of jam on it.”

As soon as Beili turned her head and lifted her crimson eyes, she saw the young man holding the plate in front of her.

When she said nothing, he picked up the steaming cup of milk tea.

“Or… do you want to drink, drink this first?”

Beili pulled her thoughts back.

“Either is fine.” She leaned in and kissed the corner of his lips. “Thank you for your hard work.”

The young man’s upturned lips pressed together lightly, and his golden eyes were like sunset falling over a lake, scattering into shimmering flecks of gold.
