Chapter 268

The person stood outside the window, the linen draped over her body wrapped around her hair as well. The faint light behind her traced a halo around her, blurring her features.

But Beili recognized her at a glance. Bertie Swan.

At this moment, there was none of the refinement or childish innocence she had shown in Sainthos. Her expression was numb, as if every emotion had been stripped away.

Logically speaking, they had never met. Bertie Swan shouldn’t have known who she was.

But Bertie Swan simply stood there outside the window, quietly meeting her gaze, with no intention of leaving.

There seemed to be some indescribably complicated emotion in her eyes. Bertie Swan stared at her for a few seconds, then beckoned to her.

…

It looked like this woman had something to say to her.

Beili said a word to the shop assistant, then left the restaurant.

A wind had picked up outside.

The breeze, carrying a slightly stuffy heat, lifted her light grayish-purple gauze dress and her long, satin-like silver-gray curls.

Her red eyes shifted, and she walked toward the woman waiting by the roadside.

“You seem to be looking for me. What is it?” Beili asked.

Oh… This was really something. She could actually talk to Bertie Swan through a dream and a memory.

This was something she had never imagined at all.

Beili pressed her lips together, trying to stay calm, while keeping her face composed as if nothing was wrong.

Bertie Swan’s gaze on the young woman was quiet and deep.

“It’s time to wake up. Don’t linger in the dream.”

That was what she said.

Beili was secretly startled.

But then she remembered that this person could see things that would happen in the future, and it no longer seemed so surprising.

Instead, a trace of displeasure rose in her heart.

She gave a perfunctory “Mm” and lightly turned her head away without responding.

After all, when she left the dream was her business. She would decide for herself. She didn’t need anyone else to remind her.

Bertie Swan paid no mind to her attitude and continued, “When darkness descends, the firstborn son will die.”

Beili’s red eyes stilled. Thinking she had misheard, she asked, “Who will die?”

“Those who violate the Contract.”

Bertie Swan said numbly, “In his family, every firstborn son born to his descendants will die.”

What…

Beili’s expression changed slightly.

If the person who violated the Contract was the Former King of Tilisha, then the firstborn sons born to his descendants would mean…

A figure with red hair and black eyes surfaced in her mind, and unease began to stir faintly in Beili’s heart.

“Is this a curse laid by the Demon? If the one who cast it is made to stop, will the curse be lifted?”

Beili asked directly, cutting straight to the point.

Another gust of wind rose.

It swept up the dust on the ground.

“No. The one who cast the curse was not the Demon.”

Bertie Swan shook her head and raised her hand, pointing at her instead.

“It was you.”

Beili’s red eyes widened slightly in surprise. Just as she was about to say something, she saw Bertie Swan shake her head again.

“It was you, and yet it was not you.”

Although the words were hopelessly confusing, Beili still felt anxiety well up inside her because of the accuracy of the prophecies made by the person before her.

She was afraid that what Bertie Swan said would come true.

After all, judging from the clues she had uncovered, Bertie Swan’s prophetic ability was indeed powerful.

Beili was silent for two seconds, then asked:
“Then how do I break the spell?”

“As you are now, you can’t break it.”

Bertie Swan answered her, “Especially not while you’re still clinging to the dream.”

“Then what should I do?”

Faced with that question, the woman fell silent.

Beili had even given an order through the Morpho Butterflies in her mind, commanding Bertie Swan to tell her how to undo the spell.

But the other woman remained silent for a very long time.

A flicker of irritation rose inside Beili. She could only switch topics and ask, “What about you? What are you doing in Tilisha? You should know how chaotic it is here right now. This is no place to stay.”

That question made Bertie Swan’s numb expression suddenly soften.

“I came to see my brother. He will descend here,” she said gently.

Her brother?

Wasn’t her brother already dead?

Puzzled, Beili thought back to the information Mr. Vulture had told her.

Bertie Swan had seemed to love her brother very much.

If that young man had not died at the Coming-of-Age Ceremony, then according to the Swan Family’s tradition, the two of them would have become husband and wife.

Beili also remembered what she had heard in Doctor Cassius’s memories-Bertie herself had said that her brother had been killed by Doctor Cassius.

Just as she was thinking, the woman’s voice interrupted her thoughts.

“Look. My brother is here.”

As soon as Bertie Swan finished speaking, Beili followed her gaze and saw a woman leading a little boy slowly down the streets of the Town.

The boy was very young. When he passed by Bertie Swan, he did not even reach her waist.

But Bertie Swan’s gaze was infinitely tender as she watched the little boy’s receding back. Of course, it was obvious that her eyes were looking through him at someone else.

“His mother has already looked back at you three times…”

Beili reminded her with a sigh.

But the latter turned a deaf ear.

Only after the mother and son disappeared around the corner of the street did Bertie Swan turn back.

“When he grows up, we will have a child.”

After saying that, she paused for a second, then added, “You should have already met her. My daughter, Susanna.”

“I have.” Beili’s voice held no emotion as she answered woodenly, “Because of you, she is now my younger sister.”

“Then that man from the Blood Clan will indeed do as I asked in the future.”

“You used him. No, you deceived him.”

Beili turned her head and looked straight into the woman’s eyes, exposing the truth without hesitation. “You made him mistakenly believe Susanna was the person he wanted to find.”

Bertie Swan tugged lightly at the corner of her lips, revealing a dismissive smile.

“He made my brother leave me. I could only let him experience the same pain.”

A chill surfaced in her eyes.

“The more someone wants to possess a person, the easier it is for them to miss them. That is his fate,” she said.

…

Beili held her fork, lost in thought.

When Ashera came to the dining room to find her, a light sweep of his gaze was enough for him to notice that the rice pudding on her plate had not been touched, and the cup of camel milk was still full.

“Does it not taste good?”

As the young man spoke, he sat down beside her, a hint of confusion in his golden eyes.
