Chapter 97

These three girls were notorious as the most arrogant and unruly young ladies in aristocratic circles.

Susanna did not dare to refuse their proposal, but she was even more afraid to agree.

She stood rooted to the spot, eyes wide with worry as she watched the three of them pick up their cakes and tiptoe toward the garden pavilion.

Seeing them approach Bartholomew’s position, Susanna lowered her head and covered her eyes with her hands, as if she could escape the impending disaster by simply not looking.

At that moment, the young girl in the dusty-purple gown was lying on a rattan chair.

A wide-brimmed hat still covered her face, and the warm sunlight filtered through the gaps in the vines, dancing across the feathers on the hat.

Her breathing was steady and she was deep in sleep, seemingly completely unaware of the three sneaky figures approaching her.

Three shadows quietly loomed over her.

Before they could make their next move, several blue-green Morpho Butterflies suddenly flew out from under the rattan chair. Their wings fluttered rapidly as they lunged at the girls’ faces, lightly dusting them with a black powder.

The three girls frantically waved their arms in silence, intent on chasing the butterflies away before continuing with their cream-covered plan.

Suddenly, they felt an itchy, stinging pain on their faces, as if tiny insects were gnawing at their cheeks.

In their panic, the cakes in their hands tumbled to the ground.

“Oh my god… my face hurts so much!”

“Me too! It’s killing me!”

“Your face is covered in blisters!”

They finally couldn’t help but scream. Looking at each other, they saw the horrific state of one another’s faces.

The girl on the rattan chair seemed to be awakened by their screams. Only then did she remove her hat and slowly open her eyes.

Her gem-like, deep red eyes were clear, though they held a hint of haziness and displeasure at being disturbed.

“What’s wrong? Is the tea party finally over?” she asked in a flat voice.

But the three young ladies were in no condition to answer.

The blisters on their faces had swollen to the bursting point before rupturing, leaking a white and red fluid. Their originally exquisite makeup was now a total mess.

“Looks like it’s over, then.”

The girl stretched, put her hat back on, and walked toward Susanna.

“Let’s go, Susanna.”

Hearing her voice, Susanna timidly looked up, only to find that Sister Bartholomew’s hair was still perfectly clean.

“Sister… they…” Susanna started, her words trailing off.

Beili glanced back at the three girls who were wailing in pain, nearly fainting. She said calmly, “They won’t die, though they’ll probably have to live with those rather unsightly faces for about two weeks…”

She looked down at the healed scar on the web of her left hand.

After persistently accumulating a certain amount of Mana over time, she had suddenly discovered one day that the Morpho Butterflies she summoned had a thin layer of powder on their wings.

Furthermore, this powder possessed a certain toxicity that caused corrosive damage to the skin.

“Actually, wait… they don’t have self-healing abilities. Even if they hire a good healer, it’ll probably take a month to recover.”

She let out a cold snort. “Consider this a small warning for them.”

“Sister… I…” Susanna wanted to explain something.

“No need to say anything, Susanna.” Beili interrupted her, smoothing out her skirts with total indifference. “We should grab our things and leave before they call their elders.”

Susanna took one last look back.

She swallowed hard, then picked up her handbag and followed in Sister Bartholomew’s footsteps.

The next day.

Duke Constance received ‘friendly’ inquiries via letters from three different families.

From that day forward, the Duke never again brought up the topic of having Bartholomew accompany Susanna to expand her social circle.

Two more days passed.

The Constance Family carriage left the castle, heading for the Imperial Palace.

As the Royal Hunt was approaching, they needed to arrive at the imperial city ahead of time to set out with the Royal Family’s procession on Hunting Day.
