Surviving the Tyrant with My Dog Blood Stories - Chapter 3
Chapter 3
The palace maids were helping the Tyrant change into his nightclothes.
I stood off to the side, my mind racing.
As for why anyone who attended him in bed was doomed to die, I did have a few theories.
For example: Fu Beichen couldn’t get it up.
Every beauty who learned the truth had been killed, and that was how he kept his secret hidden.
There was another strong piece of evidence supporting my guess.
Fu Beichen had been on the throne for five years. In ancient times, when having many children was considered a great blessing, he still had none.
There could only be one truth!
He was ill.
So I had to find a way to avoid actually attending him in bed, lest I be killed for knowing too much.
Fu Beichen climbed into bed on his own and reclined against the headboard with a book.
I dawdled my way over to the bedside and finally came up with an ancient method.
“Your Majesty.” I mustered my courage. “Reading at night strains the eyes. Why don’t I tell you a story instead?”
Fu Beichen paused, then lifted his eyes to look at me.
The look in his eyes right now was rather complicated. I couldn’t quite analyze it, but at least I didn’t sense any killing intent.
Fu Beichen said, “Tell one I will like.”
Me: …
How was I supposed to know what you liked?!
Fu Beichen threatened me. “If it isn’t good, I’ll kill you.”
Me: …
I thought about it seriously.
Fu Beichen was an emperor. Those male-oriented power fantasy novels were basically his life, so he definitely wouldn’t be interested in those.
What kind of story would both fit his life and feel special?
Ah! I had it!
I said, “I heard this story back in Wu State. It is said that the former emperor was a romantic by nature, and while traveling incognito through Jiangnan, he met a woman named Xia Yuhe…”
That’s right. It was Grandma Qiong Yao’s epoch-making masterpiece, My Fair Princess.
The emperor in it embraced everything with love. I hoped Fu Beichen might learn something from it after listening.
At first, I told the story very cautiously, observing the Tyrant’s reaction at all times, afraid he might not like it.
But the whole time, he kept reading his book while listening in a take-it-or-leave-it sort of way. He didn’t seem too repulsed.
Gradually, I relaxed.
The plot of My Fair Princess was actually full of twists and turns. The more I talked, the more excited I became. When I got to the part where Little Swallow was shot with an arrow, I wanted to see his reaction-only to discover that this man had actually fallen asleep!
I was a little angry.
He was practically questioning my storytelling ability.
Still, Fu Beichen looked rather well-behaved when he slept. Once those ink-dark eyes were closed, the aura around him instantly became peaceful, and the pressure that always lingered around me disappeared as well.
A tremendous sense of security washed over me.
Tonight, I should have made it through.
The eunuchs keeping watch nearby stood there in silence, blending into the wall behind them.
Very carefully, I retreated from the inner hall in slow motion at 0.1x speed, then lay down on the soft couch in the outer room.
As my back sank into the soft mattress, I let out a deep breath and finally relaxed, falling asleep fully clothed.
I slept without dreaming and woke naturally.
I opened my eyes in bliss.
Sitting by the bed was a not-very-pleased Fu Beichen.
He was looking at me with unfriendly eyes.
