Taking Advantage, Then Trying to Run - Chapter 3
It was too much to take in.
After watching all the footage, I felt my soul float out of my body.
I turned to stone. Cracks spread across my face.
What had I done?
What had I *done*?
I had gone on a drunken rampage and sexually harassed a poor girl whose only crime was kindly bringing me home!
It wasn’t her fault she had muscles!
How could I behave like that?
I buried my face in my hands and began to weep.
How was I supposed to live with myself now?
I would never again have the nerve to accept a delivery from that poor girl!
Wait.
It had taken her until two or three in the morning to clean up both me and the apartment. How was she supposed to work today?
If I remembered correctly, couriers started sorting packages at five or six in the morning.
When could she possibly have slept?
No.
Adults had to take responsibility for their mistakes.
I opened WeChat. Sure enough, every work group showed ninety-nine-plus messages.
There was the regular morning meeting, a product-requirements review, client calls, a strategy meeting… Countless decisions were waiting for me.
Every day, I opened my eyes and got straight to work.
I’d lived that way for five years without missing a single day.
I had never even taken annual leave.
I loved my job.
I’d thought I had married it long ago.
Yet today, those work messages suddenly seemed hateful. Every one of them irritated me.
I didn’t want to go to the office at all. My head was a mess, and my body had already decided where it wanted to be.
My fingers opened Anna’s chat and swiftly typed a message.
“I’m not feeling well and won’t be in today. Please chair the morning meeting and focus on three things. One: keep a close eye on the Vitality Milk Tea implementation. Two: Mr. Wang at Sweetheart Cakes keeps reading our messages without replying. Follow up twice before next Wednesday; if he still ignores us, copy his boss. Three: I’ve already analyzed the data alert for Huajian Beauty. It’s mainly due to staff turnover on their side, so don’t let the client dump all the blame on us. Have Engineers Liu and Hua cover the eleven o’clock product workshop, and take Saphire with you. Her tongue is dipped in poison, and Old Chen is terrified of her. Cancel my lunch with the COO; we’ll reschedule later. Postpone the afternoon client call too, or take it yourself. The deal is almost done, and my presence won’t make much difference.”
I hit send.
Anna replied almost instantly.
“Understood. Please take care of yourself.”
That was why I had spent two years doggedly trying to poach her from Hongyuan Group.
Anna was a formidable operator: practical, efficient, highly capable, and never one to ask an unnecessary question.
Nothing entrusted to her ever went wrong.
I put down my phone, took a moment to breathe, and made up my mind.
I rushed into the bathroom and turned on the shower.
I was going to make myself presentable, then find that young courier and apologize.
I had to settle this properly.
Otherwise, my very faith in justice would shatter.
