I was the Crown Princess personally chosen by the Empress Dowager.

On the day of our wedding, my dowry stretched for miles in a sea of red. Carriages lined the streets from one end to the other in perfect order, and countless flower petals carpeted the roadside. As far as pomp and circumstance went, it could not have been grander.

It should have been a joyous occasion. Everyone was smiling-everyone except Crown Prince Liang Qi, who wore a dark expression the entire way, without the slightest hint of happiness.

I knew why he was unhappy. He thought I was ugly.

All along the wedding procession, I could hear his inner thoughts.

He looked at me gravely. “If we want to stay alive, we need to work together.”
