The Crown Princess Is a Bit Ugly - Chapter 3
Chapter 3
I could have run.
Unfortunately, I was his newly wedded wife. On top of that, today we had somehow started hearing each other’s thoughts-and even heard someone else’s thoughts about assassinating us.
So in the end, not only did we bow to Heaven and Earth as husband and wife, we also swore brotherhood while we were at it, vowing to share blessings and shoulder hardships together.
Now that he was in trouble, there was no way I could abandon him and run off on my own.
Liang Qi fell asleep, and I lay beside him alone, eyes wide open, keeping watch through the night.
I kept watch and kept watch, until dawn broke-and the person who wanted to kill us still hadn’t come.
When Liang Qi woke up, he nearly jumped at the sight of the dark circles under my eyes.
He grabbed my hand nervously and asked, “Did that person come?”
After staying up the entire night, I had no strength left in my body. I answered him lazily, “Maybe they’ll come in a bit.”
Liang Qi explained that last night, the Emperor had kept urging him to drink, and he couldn’t refuse. Before he knew it, he’d had too much.
I waved him off. It was his turn to keep watch. I needed to sleep for a while. I truly couldn’t hold on any longer, and in a bit we still had to go serve tea.
Just before I drifted off, I suddenly heard a regretful voice.
[Oh no, I overslept. I forgot I was supposed to assassinate the Crown Prince. No hurry. In that case, we’ll proceed with Plan B.]
Thinking of how I had lain awake with my eyes open for an entire night, I cursed irritably in my heart, [Damn it, are you insane?!]
Liang Qi: [??? Is she cursing me?]
That person’s Plan B was to stab the Crown Prince to death while we were entering the palace to serve tea to the Emperor and Empress.
Liang Qi was utterly baffled. “Why do the two of us have to die in a specific order? And why does it have to be me first?”
I spread my hands, indicating that I had no idea.
The tea still had to be served, but the person trying to harm us also had to be dragged out.
And so, a ridiculous scene unfolded.
Liang Qi and I held hands, staring at every single person in the grand hall with the solemn determination of people marching to their deaths.
The slightest stir in the hall made both Liang Qi and me overly tense, and our hands clasped tighter and tighter.
The Emperor saw this and beamed as he turned to chat with the Empress Dowager. “Empress Dowager, look at them. How loving they are. I imagine it won’t be long before I have grandchildren to hold.”
As he spoke, he looked at us with a face full of gratified relief.
Liang Qi and I froze. Our hands flew apart as if we’d been shocked.
The Empress Dowager looked at me with a warm smile, clearly very pleased with me.
In truth, I wasn’t close to the Empress Dowager, and Father didn’t have much contact with her either. I had no idea why the Empress Dowager had taken a liking to me.
However, I had heard that the Empress Dowager had always wanted to support the Second Prince, and had always regarded the Crown Prince as a thorn in her side.
Judging from the Crown Prince’s attitude toward her, that rumor was basically confirmed.
She nodded as she said, “The Crown Princess I chose is beautiful and has wide hips. She’ll definitely be good at bearing children. I believe in her, and I believe in Ah Qi too.”
She spoke with firm conviction, and when she looked at us, her eyes were full of affection. It didn’t seem like she was targeting the Crown Prince at all.
She beckoned me over.
“This is for you.”
She handed me a pouch of something and leaned close to my ear to say a few words.
In an instant, my face turned bright red.
