The Daoist Is a World-Weary Brooder - Chapter 2
Chapter 2
“So, you want me, an NPC, to get that exorcist-who’s also the neighbor of the male lead’s younger brother-to reach one hundred percent Love Value?”
When I found out I was just a nameless female ghost NPC, casually mentioned by the author, wandering the corridors of a modern ghost story, I didn’t react much.
Because I didn’t look like a main character either.
As for the world being a supernatural episodic novel.
The protagonist was an exorcist named Bai Shang.
That had even less to do with me.
*Yes, Host.*
The System in my mind negotiated:
*After completing the task, our Time and Space Administration can grant you a wish, help you rebuild a body, or arrange a good reincarnation.*
“May I ask a question?”
Bright moonlight hung above as I sat on the parapet, swinging my legs. Looking down, it was a good five stories high.
*Go ahead.*
The System was polite.
Curious, I asked:
“Why do we need to obtain Love Value?”
“Then why specifically the male lead’s younger brother’s Love Value? And in the story, he doesn’t have a love interest, so he’s probably not into that sort of thing.”
I thought with some regret.
The neighbor is so attractive.
Too bad.
The System’s electronic voice was flat.
I twisted my lips and mocked:
“Your lips are tighter than a zipper. Were you in intelligence before?”
Finally it reacted, surprised:
*How did you know?*
I sneered: “No comment.”
“Bzzt… Dear listeners, this is the Yihe City Weather Station, with an emergency red alert for heavy rain… bzzt…”
Crackling static mixed with a female voice came intermittently from the old radio, accompanied by a knock at the door.
The young man struggled to open his eyes, his handsome brows furrowing. Clutching his groggy head, he went to answer the door.
He pulled the door handle, and a chilly gust of wind rushed inside, revealing the scene outside in full.
Dark, roiling clouds surged over the city. Flocks of disoriented birds circled the leaden sky, their black silhouettes sweeping across the heavens.
Before him stood me: brows uncertain, long hair loose, wearing a spaghetti-strap red dress.
“Hi, I’m lost…”
My face was deathly pale, my lips blood red.
I had just started to speak.
Without a moment’s hesitation,
the young man slammed the door shut-
-leaving me shut out.
I: “…”
This quest really is impossible.
*Looks like playing the lost girl won’t work.*
I said darkly to the System:
“Your plan was obviously a scam.”
“Tell one lie and you’ll need a hundred to cover it up.”
You said you’d hide my ghost aura and give me a human identity, but the way the neighbor just stared at me expressionless, he probably knew at a glance I was a female ghost.
*Do you have a plan?*
The System’s interest was piqued.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Looking at the tightly shut door, I smiled:
“It’s just a door and a wall, after all.”
I’m a spirit without a body.
