On the surface, however, I was a mess of snot and tears, nodding frantically.

“I believe you, I believe you.”

Seeing how cooperative I was, Zhi Yan gave me a long, searching look.

“Why did you run?”

“They say the mortal world is fun… I wanted to come out and play.”

I made up some nonsense on the fly, not daring to confess that I had overheard his conversation with the Shadow.

I blinked, stunned.

“I’ll stay and play with you.”

My feelings were complicated. I actually felt a bit suicidal.

Transforming back into Hu Lai, I brought the pregnant-looking Zhi Yan back to the Hu Family home.

“I’ve been here a long time, so you have to listen to me. Otherwise, these people will get suspicious of your identity,” I whispered to Zhi Yan. Afraid he might get angry, I added, “Don’t worry, Your Highness, I won’t let them hurt you.”

Before he could get another insult out, his eyes met Zhi Yan’s.

Zhi Yan’s moon-like beauty practically seared Master Hu’s eyes. In an instant, it was as if Master Hu was looking at a deity.

Zhi Yan’s temperament was sharper than wind and snow; his noble stride and indescribable aura crushed Master Hu’s spirit into the dust.

Cursing turned into gentle greetings; accusations turned into the most attentive hospitality.

Zhi Yan was politely ushered into the finest guest room.

Everyone in the Hu Manor was placed at Zhi Yan’s beck and call.

In the middle of the night, after Zhi Yan had taken a bath in flower petals, he wore the Hu Family’s most luxurious silks. From beneath the messy hem of his robes, a snake tail emerged, coiling around me and pinning me to his side.

“From the moment we entered the door, you’ve seemed to have something on your mind?”

Zhi Yan looked at me playfully.

I opened my mouth slowly and squeezed out a single word.

“Impressive.”

Then I added, “I’d expect nothing less from you.”

The gossip of the Hu Family spread throughout all of Jiangnan.

The hard-partying Young Master Hu Lai had suddenly become disciplined, turning into Jiangnan’s most famous henpecked husband.

I put on a brave face to maintain my dignity, looking at them with a proud expression.

“She’s carrying my child. Of course I have to treat her well.”

Zhang San draped an arm over my shoulder with a lewd grin. “It seems Brother Hu Lai is quite lucky. How does the beauty taste?”

The moment the words left my mouth, a deathly silence fell over the parlor.

I looked up and saw Zhi Yan leaning nearby, watching me with a half-smile.

I sucked in a sharp breath. Zhi Yan slowly walked toward me.

I froze in place, not daring to move. In that split second, I had already decided where I wanted to be buried after I died.

However, Zhi Yan suddenly reached out and brushed Zhang San’s hand off my shoulder.

Zhang San and Zhi Yan locked eyes, and the atmosphere grew stagnant.

I looked on, bewildered.

Zhang San still had that usual lewd expression on his face, but now his smile was starting to falter.

It was as if the two of them were having a battle of wills with their eyes.

What was happening?

Both of their faces turned somewhat pale. Finally, Zhang San was the first to break; he made an excuse and ushered the others to leave.

At that moment, I saw the Shadow swirling around Zhang San’s back.

I wanted to ask Zhi Yan what was going on, but I saw that his face was as white as paper.

His last words before he collapsed were:
