Chapter 6

No, I didn’t want to.

I quickly changed the subject. “Then do you think I’ve fallen in love with you?”

Without a second thought, he replied, “Is there even a need to guess?”

I looked at Zhi Yan blankly, wondering where he got such confidence from.

After all, even I hadn’t figured out if my lack of repulsion toward his body was because of that face of his or because of his… natural talents.

Then, my Spiritual Consciousness was invaded by him.

“You pervert!” I hurriedly tried to close off my Sea of Spiritual Consciousness, but he shattered my defenses with ease.

He drifted through my Sea of Spiritual Consciousness, witnessing all the sordid details of my past.

He saw me clinging to a Tree Demon, desperately sucking away its nutrients.

He saw me being trampled underfoot by other Flower Demons, my branches crushed as they hurled insults at me.

He saw me cautiously struggling to catch a sliver of sunlight or a drop of dew in the cracks between others.

He saw the day I first took human form.

And then he saw that day-the day I was driven out of my territory by the Flower Demons and went to the Secret Realm, injured, to pick an Immortal Herb…

I was going crazy. Right now, I felt even more exposed than I had when we were entangled in the Secret Realm.

But at that moment, Zhi Yan rushed out of the Sea of Spiritual Consciousness and headed toward my Heart Gate.

My Heart Gate was wrapped thick with vines, airtight and impenetrable. It was impossible to see what lay inside.

Even I didn’t know.

I slowly breathed a sigh of relief.

But then, Zhi Yan reached out and grabbed the primary vine on the Heart Gate.

I jolted, my mind exploding like a thousand fireworks. I seemed to hear a muffled groan from Zhi Yan in my ear as well.

Damn, is this the legendary Spiritual Communion?

I don’t know how much time passed before Zhi Yan finally pulled out.

His eyes were hazy, and his forehead was drenched in cold sweat. I wasn’t doing much better; I couldn’t move a single muscle.

“What did you see?”

My voice was weak, but I couldn’t suppress my curiosity.

“Indifference,” he said slowly.

The atmosphere turned a bit awkward.

I blinked, not wanting the conversation to die. “That’s right.”

He looked at me lazily, seemingly not understanding what I was trying to say.

“It’s my vast indifference that leaves you feeling so blue.”

“A woman’s heart needs more than just a promise, you know… fine, I’ll stop.”

Zhi Yan’s expression shifted through a dozen different emotions. After enduring it for a long while, he finally used his snake tail to stuff my mouth shut again.

“Then shut up.”

Zhi Yan really didn’t have much stamina.

His mental energy only lasted until the latter half of the night before he drifted into a half-faint, half-sleep. The tail binding me loosened, resting gently over my wrist.

Tsk. He looked almost cute like this.

I worked hard to provide him with the best environment to nurse his pregnancy. I had the Hu Family estate guarded strictly, forbidding anyone from entering.

Of course, I knew that if that Twin Serpent Shadow showed up, these mortals wouldn’t stand a chance.

But doing things is all about the attitude.

If I didn’t do something, what would I use to claim credit when Zhi Yan woke up?

To my surprise, the Shadow arrived before Zhi Yan even opened his eyes.

This time, he was still possessing Zhang San.

This made Zhang San’s forehead look dark and clouded, making him look like a total scapegoat at first glance.

“Lady Feixu,” he called my name, making me shiver.

“What are you doing? In broad daylight, under the watchful eyes of heaven… don’t you dare try anything with me…” I was full of wariness.

“Treating you so roughly that day was truly a move of desperation.” The Shadow suddenly used Zhang San’s form to manifest a beautiful face. This face actually bore some resemblance to Zhi Yan.

But the difference was obvious.

There was more gloom and malice in the Shadow’s eyes. Although he had a polite smile on his face, he gave me the creeps.

“I fell in love with Lady Feixu at first sight.” He looked at me with burning eyes.

Right now, in the Hu Family home, I was still transformed into Hu Lai.

The Shadow was occupying Zhang San’s body and looking at me with that kind of gaze, which made me think there was something wrong with his head.

“Are you trying to steal me away?” I didn’t like beating around the bush.

The Shadow suddenly laughed and nodded. “You could put it that way.”

Then he forced a compliment: “You really are quite cute.”

What was cute about this? He clearly hadn’t seen much of the world.

“But Zhi Yan is pregnant with my child. I can’t abandon him. It’s a matter of principle.”

I was blunt.

“If you really want to poach me, you can, but you have to show some sincerity. Who shows up to someone else’s house empty-handed?”

I dropped a massive hint.

Shadow couldn’t help but chuckle. He immediately pulled a bag from his pocket, filled with shimmering Immortal Herbs.

“Immortal-Nurturing Herbs, and some Immortal Herbs for healing.”

I took them and did a quick check; there didn’t seem to be any issues.

“I don’t know what Zhi Yan has told you about me, but he has always been luckier than I am. He’s had more than me since we were children.”

“As the Demon Emperor, his achievements are remarkable. In the future, there will surely be an imperial consort who is a worthy match for him.”

Shadow was also dropping massive hints at me.

“He belongs in the sunlight, whereas we are the same kind of people. Fei Xu, you should give me some serious consideration.”

I looked at him with a frown. I couldn’t help but feel this snake was acting rather “tea-ish.” His words were making me quite uncomfortable.

“So, what color snake are you?” I asked.

He seemed a bit surprised. “Black.”

“No other colors? Like, a many-splendored black or something?” I pressed.

“No,” he replied, his expression turning complicated.

“Oh.”

Clutching the bag of Immortal Herbs, I turned and walked away, my interest completely gone.

If Zhi Yan was a magnificent, dragon-like serpent as bright as fire, then this Shadow was a black snake crawling in the shadows.

My aesthetic taste is a bit basic-I still prefer the colorful ones. Sorry about that.

When I got back inside the room, I was startled.

Zhi Yan was drenched in a cold sweat, his clothes completely soaked through. His eyes, however, were strikingly bright; his pupils had shifted into demonic slits, and he was staring fixedly at me.

My heart skipped a beat. I felt like a wife caught in the middle of an affair.

“I didn’t cheat on you.”

I explained lamely.

If I cheated while the “wife” was pregnant, would I even be human anymore?

Zhi Yan gave a cold snort and turned his back to me, ignoring me.

I stepped forward to coax him, only to discover with horror that there was a terrifying crack running down his back.

“You… you… what happened to you!”

I was so panicked I didn’t know what to do. My fingers lightly brushed his skin, only to find he was as cold as a block of ice.

“My demonic energy is being drained by this little fellow. I’m too weak now, which has caused my molting period to come early.”

Zhi Yan’s voice was hoarse. “I might lose control. Get away from me.”

“No. What if Shadow comes to harm you right now?”

I hugged him firmly, transforming into vines that slowly wrapped around his entire body, using my own form to keep him warm.

“It’s been hard on you, mother of my child.”

Zhi Yan’s breathing was erratic, his eyes tinged with red.

“You’re so weak, yet you dare provoke me during my molting period? Do you have a death wish?”

“We Dodder Flowers are very resilient. We might look weak, but we’re not that easy to kill.”

Zhi Yan’s breath hitched, and he turned the tables, coiling around me tightly.

We were entangled together like the most harmonious of lovers.

After a while, I broke the peaceful atmosphere.

“Zhi Yan, do you like me?”

“Believe it or not, I’ll kill you before I ever fall for you,”

Zhi Yan hissed into my ear.

“You’re really not very cute. Your brother is much better; he was brave enough to confess his feelings to me.”

I was just joking.

Zhi Yan fell silent. I felt his body tense up and his aura become unstable. His emotions, which had finally started to level out, were on the verge of spiraling out of control again.

I quickly pulled out the Immortal Herbs Shadow had given me to claim some credit.

“Don’t be angry, I was just teasing you. I fleeced these from your brother.”

With a flick of his tail, Zhi Yan smashed all those Immortal Herbs to pieces.

I secretly lamented the waste, but Zhi Yan was already showing signs of going feral.

Thinking about it, with Shadow’s manipulative, “green tea” personality, how could a prickly tsundere like Zhi Yan be his match? He must have suffered in silence many times.

Who knows how many things had been quietly stolen from him.

This beautiful, pitiful big flower-snake… thinking about it really makes one’s heart ache for him.

Luckily, he met me, the father of his child.

“Don’t be angry now.”

I tried to soothe his emotions.

“Colorful snakes are much prettier.”

I used my vines to hold his head steady and leaned in for a blunt kiss.

The great snake froze.

Then, he wrapped himself around me even tighter, refusing to let go as if his life depended on it.
