Chapter 12

Semyre walked toward me, step by step.

From inside the cave, Norn shouted for me in panic.

I didn’t back away.

Not because I wasn’t afraid.

I was so scared my legs had gone weak.

But suddenly, I remembered that first night in the Serpent Lair, when he said he only bit liars.

And right now, I wasn’t lying to him.

Semyre stopped in front of me.

He lowered his head, the tip of his nose nearly brushing the side of my neck.

His icy breath fell over me, and my shoulder went numb.

From a distance, Adelan said, “Bite her.”

“She is the new Vessel.”

Semyre’s fangs touched my skin.

Very lightly.

Like hesitant snow.

I raised my hand and touched his face.

“Semyre.”

His pupils shifted.

I said, “I didn’t lie to you.”

A very low sound came from his throat.

Like pain, and like restraint.

“Ailia.”

“Mm.”

“Give me your hand.”

I held out my bleeding hand to him.

He lowered his head and bit into my palm.

It hurt.

But it wasn’t the pain of being torn apart.

It was more like something cold was burrowing in through my blood, dragging out, bit by bit, the contract Adelan had forcefully awakened.

Semyre bit with extreme restraint.

So much restraint that veins stood out at his temples.

My eyes reddened from the pain, but I still deliberately asked, “Didn’t you say you only bite liars?”

He loosened his bite a little, his voice unbearably hoarse.

“You lied to me just now.”

“What did I lie about?”

“You were obviously afraid.”

I froze.

He lifted his eyes to look at me.

“But you pretended you weren’t.”

My nose stung, and I almost laughed.

“That counts too?”

“It counts.”

He touched his bloodstained lips to my palm.

“Don’t lie next time.”

At that moment, Adelan’s Silver Bell Staff shattered.

The contract backlash struck him, and he collapsed to his knees. His head of white hair withered yellow in an instant.

Semyre turned around.

The mountain wind lifted his black hair.

He did not rush over to tear Adelan apart.

He only raised his hand.

The Silver Bell Curses the Temple had carved into the villagers’ bones surfaced one after another, then crumbled into powder.

The villagers slumped to the ground. No one dared speak.

Adelan lifted his head, his eyes brimming with Venomous Curse.

“Monster.”

Semyre looked at him.

“You said that three hundred years ago.”

“Do you have anything new?”

I couldn’t help it. I turned my head and laughed softly.

Semyre heard me.

He looked back at me.

It was only a brief glance, but I knew he was smiling too.

Adelan’s Silver Bell Curse was sealed by Semyre.

This time, the people of Yuehuai Village did not kneel to the Temple again.

They bound Adelan to the sacrificial cart and escorted him to the Royal City.

They were not letting him go.

They were sending him there together with Malo’s testimony, the Silver Bell fragments, and those Vessel records.

The Temple did not collapse in a single day.

But the first crack truly began in Yuehuai Village.
