Pei Wusu looked at the challenger. The young man wore fitted blue robes and held a longsword, while dense scars from sharp blades covered his hands.

His cultivation was at the fourth stage of the Mystic-rank realm.

Pei Wusu was somewhat surprised. He stood an entire major realm above the other man.

“Pei Wusu, I’d like to test my swordsmanship against yours,” the challenger said.

At the mention of swordsmanship, Pei Wusu’s expression darkened. He fixed the man with a cold stare. Whoever he was, anyone who tried to prevent Pei Wusu from entering Western Region Academy had to fall!

The more this man wanted to probe his swordsmanship, the less Pei Wusu could use the techniques he had learned in his sect. Doing so might expose his identity.

The young man looked at Pei Wusu solemnly. “Before we cross swords, let me give you my name. You may call me the Scar-Collecting Swordsman, Bai Yuanhua.”

Scar-Collecting Swordsman?!

Pei Wusu had never heard of such a thing.

Noticing his confusion, Bai Yuanhua raised a hand. The back of it was densely covered in sword scars, some old and faded, others newly added.

Pei Wusu frowned. Was that what made him a Scar-Collecting Swordsman?

He did not understand.

Bai Yuanhua drew his sword and pointed it at Pei Wusu.

“Come!” he shouted.

Pei Wusu tightened his grip on his longsword and flashed forward. He swept the blade sideways, and a sword gale like a tornado instantly barreled toward Bai Yuanhua. Before Bai Yuanhua could even defend himself, the strike sent him crashing to the ground.

Boom!

Bai Yuanhua coughed up a mouthful of blood.

The pain of the sword wound left him unable to rise. Blood filled his mouth, and when he saw Pei Wusu about to leave, he panicked. Reaching out, he called hoarsely, “Don’t go! Please leave a scar on the back of my hand!”

The spectators’ mouths twitched at the sight.

Someone was actually asking another person to injure him?

What a strange fellow.

In the waiting area, Shen Yan wore an odd expression. She had recognized Bai Yuanhua. She had once competed against him in swordsmanship at the Beast-Martial Arena…

Pei Wusu had no intention of humoring him, but Bai Yuanhua forced himself to crawl after him in pursuit of his goal.

“Don’t go!”

His cry tore from his throat.

Pei Wusu’s steps paused. When he glanced back, he saw several nearby combatants trample Bai Yuanhua underfoot as they fought. Bai Yuanhua wailed a few times.

Pei Wusu still had no desire to pay him any attention.

“Please…”

Tears streamed down Bai Yuanhua’s face as he stretched a hand toward him again and again.

Pei Wusu remained unmoved, his expression unchanged.

…

When the first round ended, only fifty people remained standing, including Pei Wusu, Qi Lingxuan, and Zhu Miaoqing.

Shen Yan and her companions were not chosen for the second round, but Chi Yue, young master of the Chi family, was.

Many people disliked Chi Yue, so they joined forces to take him down first. If he lost this combat test, he would be barred from entering the next stage.

With that thought in mind, a large number of contestants surged toward him.

The Chi family members in the stands immediately grew solemn.

The Chi family head was frantic. “This is bad, this is bad…”

“Family Head, nothing will happen, will it?!” a Chi family elder asked anxiously.

Overhearing them, the people nearby assumed the Chi family was worried about Chi Yue and began whispering with thinly veiled mockery.

“Could Chi Yue be nothing but a paper tiger?”

“Spirit-plant masters aren’t strong fighters to begin with. However high Chi Yue’s cultivation is, he’ll still be nothing more than a cat that knows how to scratch…”

“Exactly! Hahaha…”

They had long found Chi Yue disagreeable. Watching so many geniuses surround him felt deeply satisfying.

Their laughter rang out—only to die in the next instant.

Their pupils contracted. On the field, Chi Yue opened his eyes. A trace of anger colored his cold, world-weary gaze, and cyan radiance followed every step he took.

Dozens of spirit plants suddenly burst from the ground around him: enormous man-eating flowers, thick vines, and all manner of spirit-plant creatures. They instantly attacked the geniuses closing in on him.

The ten massive man-eating flowers had vivid green leaves shaped like gaping mouths, lined within by serrated tendrils and teeth.

They roared. The sound struck like a sonic attack, blasting numerous people away in an instant.

Then the flowers made ready to bite down and swallow the contestants.

Everyone present blanched at the sight.

Dean Xuanyun shot to his feet. He had no choice but to intervene, gathering spiritual power to halt the man-eating flowers.

They froze in place.

Meanwhile, the multicolored spirit-plant creatures ran amok, indiscriminately slapping every contestant into the air!

The field descended into utter chaos.

Shrieks and wails rang out without end.

Terrified that Chi Yue would kill someone and lose his chance to enter Western Region Academy, the Chi family head leaped to his feet and roared, “Yue’er, you can’t kill anyone! Stop at once!”

Chi Yue closed his eyes. A green leaf had actually sprouted from the top of his head and now swayed in the breeze. Bonelessly leaning against the trunk of a vine, he appeared not to have heard the family head at all and remained drowsy.

The Chi family head burned with anxiety. Faced with such an emergency, he could only resort to his ultimate move.

He amplified his voice with spiritual power.

“Your father is begging you!”

Everyone present turned in unison to stare at the Chi family head, their eyes filled with disbelief.

Under so many gazes, the older man’s face went scarlet.

But his plea worked. In that very instant, every spirit plant and spirit-plant creature vanished without a trace.

Chi Yue slowly opened his eyes, looking drowsy. Cyan radiance followed every step he took.

The geniuses who had been beaten—or had nearly died—scrambled away on all fours as he approached.

Judging by his appearance alone, Chi Yue looked as ethereal and beautiful as an immortal. No one would have imagined that the spirit plants he had contracted included terrifying creatures like man-eating flowers!

And there were an astonishing number of them!

After taking a few steps, Chi Yue seemed to grow tired again. Vines instantly appeared and wrapped around his entire body.

He… went back to sleep.

The crowd fell silent.

He was far too arrogant!

Yet not one of the youths on the field could defeat him.

Even as they fought, they deliberately kept away from Chi Yue.

The second round soon ended. Unsurprisingly, he passed the combat test.

The third-round selection included Shen Yan, Wen Yuchu, Zhu Hezhou, Yu Changying, Xiao Zechuan, Li Buman, and others.

When the crowd saw that this round contained one genius with Transcendent Heaven-rank aptitude and four with Heaven-rank aptitude, their eyes lit up. Anticipation surged through them.
